. Application filed August 22, 1914, Serial No. 858,093. Renewed January- 15, 1919. Serial No. 271,836.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 'I, FREDERICK W. COLLIER,
a citizen of the United States, residing at M brush the city of Worcester, county of Worcester, and State of Massachusetts, have'invented a new and useful'lmprovement in Brush- Adjusting Means for Cleaning-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
invention relates to improvements in. adjusting means for cleaning machines, and the object of my improvements Is to construct a novel means for raising and lowering the brush of a combined sweeper and vacuum cleaning machine in order first to raise the brush into and out of contact with the surface so that the machine may be employed either as a sweeper, a vacuum cleaner, or a combined swee er and vacuum cleaner; and, second, to provide adjustment to'compensate fonwear on the bristles as well as to provide for different lengths of carpet nap.
With the above purposes in view my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of arts aswill be hereinafter more fully described, pointed out in the claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
F igure 1 shows in elevation a combined vacuum and sweeper cleaning machine, hav

wheels with 'the suction-creating the. operatin'gil andle therefor, 9 the drive means andwhich support the rear end of the machine, and 10 the driving wheels which v led sectional-plan showi the construction of supporting wheel h t fd to its by the bnush adj yoke; Referring by numerals ito thejaooompany ing Pivotally connected with the casin I 7, i
p to its side walls in advance of the whee s 10 are the arms 11-11 forming part of a yoke, the rear body portion 12 of which extends around the rear end of the casing, theside arms 11 being extendedoutwardly beyond the wheels 9 and 10. Formed in said rear body portion of the yoke are the vertically disposed slots 13, and carried by the casing registering with said slots are the screw seats 1 L. 1
15 designates a plate having at its upper and lower margins the ribs 16 which overlap the margins of the rear bodyportion 12 of the yoke. Formed in said plate, registering with said vertical slots are the diagonal slots 17. Extending through the diagonal slots 17 in the plate 15, throu h the vertical slots 13 in the rear portion 0 the yoke and seated into the screw seats 14, carried by the casing, are the screws 18.
Formed in the plate 15, between the dia onal slots 17, is a circular opening 19 into w ich there is fitted a disk 20 having'the peripheral flanges 21 which ride over the margins of the opening 19. This disk 20 is secured to the body portion 12 of the yoke by means of a pivot 22 arranged eccentrieally to the disk 20 and arranged to move in a slot 23 formed in the yoke. v
For rotating the disk 20, I attach thereto the handle 24 the free end thereof being turned outwardly slightly to facilitate grasping.
Carried by the arms 11 of the yoke, be-- tact with the wheels 10 for the operation 1 of the brush, The bodyportion of the brush 28 of the machine we rides in the openin m e ded 1W ing so that the bin ered, as desired.
I'n'Figs. 1 and er-show insolid lines, he

indicated indotted lines in Fig.- 2 t e late. I
I 15 is bodily moved upon the yoke causing .the inclined edges ofthe slots 17 therein to engage with thestuds or pins 18 which are stationarily supported relative to the casing. The slotted plate thus acts as a double faced inclined plane and forces the yoke in one direction or the other, accordingly as the plate is laterally moved. The eccentric 19' and the handle by which it is turned constitu te means for conveniently manipulating the plate 15. By reason of the eccentric ar rangement the disk jvill be held by friction in any desired position between its limits of movement, so that the yoke may be held,
in any desired elevation to accommodate different'lengths of nap of carpet, ;as.wel1 as to hold the brush in any desired degree of contact with the surface to be cleaned. It is to be observed that the yoke also serves the.
function of retaining the wheels upon their respective carrying-shafts, without the employment of any for said Wheels.
I claim:
extraneous securing devices 1. The combination, in a carpet cleaningmachine, with a casing, and a yoke pivoted thereto carrying a brush for actmgupon the carpet, of an inclined plane device supported upon theyoke and movable laterally relaet cleaning for driving the brush, of an inclined plane oke pivoted therer device carried by the yoke and shiftable laterally relatively thereto, and stationar proj ections carried by the casing with whic the said inclined plane device engages,
whereby shifting of it causes vertical movement of the yoke and the brush it carries. -3. The combination, in a carpet cleaning machine, with a casing, ayoke pivoted there- 'to, a rotatable brush carried by the yoke,
and means for driving thebrush, of a plate in which is an inclined slot, carried by the yoke and shiftable relatlvely thereto, and a projection carried -by the casing and eX- tending into the slot of the plate, the engagementof the plate as it is shifted with the said projection causing vertical movement of the yoke. p
4. The combination, in a carpet cleanlng machine, with a yoke pivoted thereto and having arms at the sides of the casing and across-piece extending past one end, a rotatable brush carriedby the yoke, and means for driving the brush, of a plate mounted upon the cross-piece of the yoke, the plate having formed in it inclined"slots, and the cross-piece having formed in it vertical slots that register with the inclined slots 1n the plate, ,pins carried by the casing extending through the said slots, and aneccentrlc for shifting the plate relative to the cross-piece, substantially asset forth.
In witness whereof, I have signed. the specification in the presence of two sub scribing witnesses.
