WITNESSES. I'NVENTOR.
WILLIAM K. SAWYER, OF THREE OAKS, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN TABLE-=FASTENINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,304, dated September 10, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILL AM K. SAWYER, of Three Oaks, in the county of Berrien and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful de vice-21. Furniture-Fastenerfor fastening together table, bedstead, stand, and other frames; and I do declare that the followin g is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in
which Figure 1 represents a plan view of my device. Fig. 2 represents the inside of a table corner, showing my fastener on duty; and Fig. 3 is a detail, showing a table-leg adapted for use with my fastening apparatus. I sometimes, however, prefer to construct the fast ener of wrought-iron or other malleable substance, and in that case form it oftwo or more pieces of metal.
My invention relates to the manufacture of tables, bedsteads, desks, chairs, and other articles of cabinet work 5 and consists in the novel construction of a clamp or fastener, intended to serve as ready and useful means foruniting the corners of such furniture with great firmness without the aid of screws, bolts, or glue. To this end I construct (usually of cast-iron or brass) the frame shown on Fig. 1 of the drawing. This frame consists of two fianches, A A, placed at right angles to each other, and adapted to fit closely around and on the outside of the corner of the table-frame, as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 2. It also consists in the flanches c 0, adapted for attachment to the top of the table by screws;
and also of the arms H H, adapted to clasp loosely around the table-leg, as shown in Fig. 2. All the abovenamed parts are usually east in a single piece, and form one continuous plate extending around the table-corner, clasping the leg, and forming ears or lugs for attachment to the top of the table-frame. The letter B represents a thumb-screw, which I pass through an opening in the inner corner of the arms H. By means of this thumb-screw (the point of which rests against the leg) the operator is enabled to force the leg firmly against the inner angle of the table-frame and secure it in place.
In constructing the sides and end pieces of a table-frame, I cut slots therein adapted to thewidth of the arms H, so that the arms may rest therein, and such side and end pieces be permitted to join each other and form the ordinary angle. I also construct the leg in a quadrangular shape, as shown on Fig. 3, to adapt it to the shape of the fastening-frame.
I do not wish in this patent to limit my claims to the construction of tables only, as my invention is adapted for use in the manufacture of many articles of furniture besides tables.
I claim as my invention- The frame, Fig. 1, constructed with flanches A A, arms H H, and lugs c c, in combination with the set-screw B, substantially as and for the purpose-specified.
WILLIAM K. SAWYER.
