WINDOW-SASH FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, HENRY WV. NELSON, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Ashby and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Window-Sash Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention pertains to sash holders, or sash fasteners.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a simple, practical, and eflicient device for sustaining window sash in any desired position of elevation, one which will substantially take the place of the ordinary sash weight.
\Vith these objects in view, attention is called to the accompanying drawings, wherein--.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device as applied to a window sash in actual operation, a section of the sash being broken away to show the modus opercmclz' of the device;
Fig. 2 is an edge elevation of the edge adjacent the window frame;
Fig. 3 is an edge elevation of the opposite edge without showing Fig. 2;
Fig. at is a sectional detail showing the construction and arrangement of the several parts of the device.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, my invention consists of a suitable housing 1 adapted to be set within a mortise 2 cut in the side of the sash The outer face of the housing 1 may be countersunk in the edge of the sash 3, so as to afford a continuous unbroken surface 4. Pivoted medially within the housing 1 is'the trigger 5, same consisting of a short lever pivotally mounted as aforesaid upon a pin 6 extending transversely across the housing 1, and secured at either side by burring the ends over, or otherwise. A spur'port 7 is cut through the lower portion of the outer surface 4 of the housing 1, and a spur 8 is pivotally mounted by means of the pin 9 to the lower end of the trigger 5, and is adapted to play through the spur port 7. To the upper end of the trigger 5 is likewise pivotally mounted by means of the pin 10, the horizontal push lever 11, same extending through a horizontal mortise 12 cut through the sash 3, so that the end of the push lever 11 extends inwardly of said sash. A thimble 13 may be located at the inner end of the mortise 12 to add to the finished appearance of the attachment, and a button 17 may likewise be mounted at the outer end of the push lever 11. A spring 14: is mounted within the housing 1, and normally adapted to expand the device in such manner as to throw the spur 8 out through the spur port 7, at the same time projecting the push lever 11 through the mortise 12 out through the thimble 13.
In operation, the sash 3 is mortised as aforesaid, and the device is set within such mortise, and is secured in position by suitable screws 15. The operation of the spur 8 is such as to normally engage the guide 16 of the window frame, thus holding the sash against downward motion, and so that the sash will stand at any required point. If it is desired to lower the sash still farther, the push lever 11 is projected into the mortise 12, thus releasing the spur 8 from engagement with the guide 16, and permitting the sash to be lowered. As the inclination of the spur is downward, it is obvious that the sash may be readily raised by merely exerting an upward force upon the same, the spur 8 slidingly passing over the guide 16. The spur 8 being pivotally mounted, its outer face always sets squarely to and against the sash guide of the window frame.
While I have herein described a certain specific manner and method of constructing the elements of my invention, it is understood that I may vary from the same in minor details, not departing from the spirit of my invention, so as best to construct a practical device for the purpose'intended, as defined in the appended claims.
What I claim to (be new and patentable is:
1. In combination with a window sash having an outer vertical edge properly mortised out to receive the device, a sash fastener comprising a housing adapted to set within said mortise with a spur port in its outer face, a vertically disposed movable spur within said housing, means carried by the housing for normally holding the spur in projected position through the port against the sash guide, a push lever connected with said parts and extending inwardly through the vertical sash edge for releasing the spur, said lever and spur being disposed in a single vertical plane.
2. In combination with a window sash having an outer vertical edge properly mortiscd out to receive the device, a sash fastener comprising a housing adapted to set within said mortise with a spur port in its outer face, a vertically disposed trigger medially pivoted within the housing and offset outwardly at its lower end, a spur pivoted on the lower end of said trigger and adapted to play through the port in said housing, a spring within said housing adapted to 'bear against the upper inner face of the trigger to normally force the spur outwardly, a push lever connected with the upper end of the said trigger and extending inwardly through the vertical sash edge, said lever, trigger and spur being disposed in a single vertical plane.
3. In combination with a window sash having an outer vertical edge properly mortised out to receive the device, a sash fastener comp-rising a housing having a fiat outer face adapted to lie flush with the Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the outer face of the said sash and having a spur port thereln, side portiions .on sald housing extending at right angles to the face and positioned in the mortise, a vertically disposed trigger medially pivoted between the sides of the housing and offset outwardly at its lower end, a spur pivoted on the lower end of said trigger and adapted to play through the port in the face of the housing, a spring positioned within the housing between the face thereof and the upper inner face of the trigger and adapted to normally bear against said trigger to force the spur outwardly, and a push lever connected with the upper end of said trigger and extending inwardly through the vertical sash edge.
