To all whom t may concern:
' Be it known that I, FREDERICK HAcHMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have .invented a new and useful Container, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to containers.
An object of the inventionv is to provide an improved container for granulated and powdered flavoring materials and the like having a novel and efiicient device for controlling the passage of the granulated or powdered materials from the container, and provided with means whereby said device may be turned to position to permit quantities of the contents to pass from the container. i
Another object of the invention is to provide a container for granulated and powdered flavoring materials having a novel form of closure for opening and closing the perforations in thewall of the container to control the discharge of the contents from the container,eand means for holding said closure removably in position, whereby said closure may easily be turned to positions to open and close the perforations in the wall of the container-and may also be easily re- .moved in order to afford access to the container with a spoon or the like.
Other objects relating tothe novel construction and arrangement of the adjustable and removable closure will be apparent from the following description without -specific mention.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a container equipped with one form of my invention.

As illustrated in Fig. 1 the container 1 is .composed of sheet metal having a roll or bead 2 formed at its upper edge. A cover or top 3 is pressed or rolled around the roll or bead 2 as shown at 4 so that a firm connection is formed between the top and the side walls Aof the container.
TheV top of the container has a relatively large opening therethrough which is surrounded by an 4annular flange 5 extending into the container a suflicient distance to have Formed therein the discharge openings or perforations 6. As shown the flange is slightly tapering so that the inner end of the passage formed by the iiange lis of slightly less diameter than the outer portion of the passage.
My improved closure coperates with the top of the container and with the flange 5. The closure comprises a tubular part 7, one end of which is closed by an end wall 8 united to the tubular part 7 by a circumferentially swaged bead or enlargement .9. Projections 10 from the closure rest upon the outer surface of the top 3 and are intended to be engaged by the thumbs or fingers of the user and to constitute handles for turning the closure from one position to another. The tubular part 7 of the closure has a number of holes 11 therethrough which in one position of the closure register with the holes 6 and in another position of the closure 'are out of registration with the holes 6. Thus the closure may be moved or turned to open and to close the discharge openings. Turning movement of the closure in one direction is limited by stops 12 on the top of the container in position to be engaged by the projections 10; and turning movement of the closure in the opposite direction is limited by similar stops 13. Thus when the projections 10 are in contact with the stops 13 the holes 1-1 and the holes 6 are in vregistration; and when the projections 10 are in contactwith the stops 12 the holes 1'1 are out of registration with the holes 6 and the container is closed.
The closure is held in connection with the container by the beadk Qengaging under the lower end of the tubular flange'. The closure may be easily placed in connection with the container by pressure, because the extension 5 is resilient and will yield permitting passage of the bead 9. Also, thev closure may be easily removed from the container due to the resiliency of the part 5. Prefer- ,flange 14 which, however, differs from the Harige 5 in that the flange 14 is not provided with any openings or holes therethrough.

However-,the flange 14 may be cut o r split at one r more points, as desired, in order to obtain vthe necessary resiliency to permit free and easy insertion and Withdrawal of the closure. In this instance the closure includes a tubular part 15 having an end wall 16 united'thereto by a circumferential bead 17 e moval of the closure.when desired. The end wall 16 of the closure is formedwith a number of'holes 18. A disk 19 is supported against the outer surface of the Wall 16 and is formed with a number of holes 20 which in onel position of the disk register with the holes 18 and in another position of the disk are out of registration with the holes 18 so that the holes through each of said parts are closed by the solid material of the other part. The edge of the disk 19 is received within the groove resulting from the formation of the bead 17 so that the, disk will be permanently .and efficiently heldin connection Withthe closure. At one side of the disk a number of ridges or blunt serrations 21 are formed so that'by engaging the thumb or -finger therewith the disk may be turned from-oneposition'to another.
The 'disk 19 is formed with a pair of depressions 22 arranged to receive projections 23 on the wa'll 16. When the disk is in one adjustment theV projections 2.3 engage in both of the depressions 22 and when the disk is turned to another. adjustment or position only one of the projections' 23 engages in a depression 22. As shown both projections 23 engage the depressions 22 when the holes 18 and 20 are in registration; and when the disk is turned to position to close the holes only one of the projections will engage in a depression. Thus the disk will be properly retained in any adjustment in which it is placed.
Instead of turning the disk 19 to open and to close the discharge openings the closure maybe turned if desired by engaging the supporting projections 24 to turn the closure, and at the same time hold the disk from turning. Stops 25 in the path of movement of the projections 24 limit movement of the closure so that when the projections 24 are in engagement with one pair of the stops 25 the discharge openings through the Wall 16 vand the disk 19 are in registration; and when the projections 24 are in engagement with the other, pair of stops the openings through the disk and closure are closed.
Obviously other modifications may be made Without departure from the spirit of the invention;
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
' A`container ofthe character described,
comprising a top having an opening therethrough, an annular flange around the openin extending into the containervand having holes therethrough, a tubular part fitting Within the annular flange and having holes which in one position of said part register with the holes in the flange and in another position of said part are closed by said flange,
an end Wall closing the inner end of said tubular part, and a bead connecting'said end Wall With said tubular part and engaging under the end of said flange to retain said parts in connection with each other. l

.and means for moving said tubular part to -flange, an end Wall closing the inner end of said tubular part, al bead connecting said end wall with said tubular part and engagingAunder the end of said flange to retain said parts in connection with each other, means for moving said tubular part to'said different positions, and means for stopping movement of said tubular part in said positions.

A container of the character described, comprising a. top having `an opening therethrough, a Vflange bordering said opening and extending into the container, 'a Vpart fitting Within said opening and" having a bead at its inner end engaging under the end of said flange to hold said .part in positionin said opening, said part having outlet openings therethrough for the contentsv of the container, and means for closing said openmgs. A container of the character described, comprising a top having an opening therethrough, a flange bordering said opening and extending into the container, a part fitted Within said opening and -havinw a bead at its inner end engaging under t e inner end of said flange, said part having holes therethro-ugh for the'discharge of the contents of the container, and means for moving said part to positions to open and to close said openings.

A container of the character described, comprising aj top having an opening therethrough, a flange bordering said opening and extending into the container, a part litted Within Said opening and Vhaving a bead at its inner end engaging under the inner end of said. flange, said part having holes therethrough for the discharge of the contents of the container, means for moving said part to positions to open and to close said openings, and means for stopping-'movement of said part in the positions aforesaid.

A container of the character described, comprising a top having an opening therethrough; a part fitting Within said opening and having holes for the discharge of the' contents of the container; another part Vfor closing the holes in said first-named part, one of said parts being movable to positions to open and to close said holes; a bead on said first named part holding said first-named part in said opening in the top and permit-v ting removal and replacement/of said part;
projections in connection with said movable part for moving the same to positions to open and to close said holes; and stops in lposition to be engaged by said projections to stop movement of said movable part in each of the positionsaforesaid.

A container of the character described, comprising a top having an opening therethrough, a resilient flange bordering said opening and extending into the container, a part fitting Within said -opening and having a bead at its inner end engaging under the end of said flange, whereby saidpart is removably held in position in said opening, said part having holes therethrough for the .discharge of the contents of the container,
and means for moving said part to positions to open and to close said holes.
9. A container of the character Udescribed, comprising a top having an opening therethrough, a resilient flange bordering said opening and extending into the container, a part fitting Within said opening and having a bead at its inner end engaging under the end of said flange, whereby said part is removably held in position in said opening,
said part having holes therethrough for the discharge of the contents of the container, means for moving said part to positions to open and to close said holes, and stops for.
stopping movement of said part in the positions aforesaid.
