Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANZ Af-FULLER, OF-NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO THE J. E. MERGOTT COMPANY, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
' T all 'whomz't may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANZ A. FULLER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar 'Holders and Ash-Receptacles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make, conashes, burnt matches, and the like, and provided with 'means for supporting cigars, cigarettes, etc.
The 1nvent1on relates more particularly to a novel'construction of a combined cigar holder and ash receptacle, comprising an upper and a lower shell, the lower shell at its upper edge being provided with holding means, and the upper shell at its lower edge being provided with locking means, said locking means having locking engagement with said holding means. The principal object of this invention therefore, is to produce a cigar holder and ash receptacle, for the'purposes above enumerated, which shall be neat in appearance, and-shall be of a simple, strong and durable construction, thus providing a device consisting of but two parts, said parts being of such shape as to lend themselves readily to manufacture by the use of suitable punches and dies from ordinary sheet metal, and can be readily and conveniently taken apart for the'purpose of removing the ashes, burnt matches, etc., and then again assembled.
My present invention therefore consists in the novel construction of a combined cigar holder and ash receptacle embodying the principles hereinabove mentioned, and of a character to be more fully described in the following specification. This invention consists furthermore in the several novel arrangements and combinations of the various .parts, as well as in the details of construc tion of the same, all of which will be hereinafter more fullv Set forth and then finally Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Au 112, 11919.
5 Application filed August 28, 1916. Serial N 0. 117,157.
embodied in the clauses of the claim which are appended to this specification.
The invention is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a plan view of the preferred form of my improved device.
Fig. 2 represents a side elevation, partly in section, taken on lines oa-w of Fig. 3.
Fig. 3 represents an under plan view; and
Figs. 4 and 5 represent fragmentary views of the upper and lower sections, illustrating the locking and holding means, by means of which the sections are secured together.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to the said drawings, the reference character '1 indicates the complete device, which consists essentially of, an upper and lower section, namely, the lower ash receptacle 2, and the upper cigar holder 3, secured to said ash receptacle ina manner to be hereinafter described, said cigar holder having an aperture 4 through which ashes, matches, etc., may passinto the ash receptacle 2. v
The upper section or cigar holder 3 is blanked out from a single piece of suitable sheet metal, and provided at its circumferential edge with a plurality of integral projections 5, preferably four in number, as shown on the drawings, said projections 5 being adapted to be turned over on the inside of said holder 3 to form guides 5', the center of each projection 5 having a depression. 6 formed therein, which projections and depressions form the locking means for holding said cigar holder on the ash receptacle 2. The upper surface of said holder 3 is provided with a raised annular portion 7 forced out from the metal when the holder is blanked out, and this raised annular portion 7 is provided with depressedportions 8, for the pn ose of receiving cigars, cigarettes, etc., anc for the purpose of permitting the ashes therefrom to drop into the ash receptacle 2, the center of the holder 3 is cut away, forming a circular aperture 4, which permits said ashes to drop into the lower portion of the device 1.
The lower section or ash receptacle 2 is f rmed as hown in the dra ings, o a ingle piece of suitable sheet metal, the circumferen'tial'edge being provided with a plurality of integral holding ears 10, extending outwardly therefrom, said ears 10. being four in number to correspond with the integral projections 5 formed on the cigar holder 3. The center of each of said holding ears is apertured as at 11, which apertures are designed toreceive the depressions (l of the locking means 5, when the two'sections are broughttogether to form the completed cigarholder and ash receptacle.
The outside peripheral edge of the cigar holder 3 is turned down, forming. a; flange 12, which flange forms a guide for centering saidholder 3 on the ash receptacle 2, the outside edge. of the holding ears 10 of said receptacle 2 beingin close proximity to the ina side edge of the flange 12, and upon the sections being turned in opposite directions,
' each of said ears will engage withone of the turned-over projections on the holder 3, and
will be interlocked therein and guided thereby, so that further rotation in the same direction will force the ears 10 into the guides 5-of the turned-over projections 5 and cause the depressions 6 to snap into engagement with the apertures 11, thus securely locking preventing acthe two sections together and cidental separation thereof.
Owing to theiplain contour of the cigar holder 3 outside of the raised annular portion 7,it; lends itself admirably for advertising purposes, and also, the inclined portion leadingto the center aperture 4, for the same reasons, lends itself for the same purpose.
Experience has demonstrated that the organization above described is a highly efficient one, and while the device described is the preferred embodiment of my present invention, I do not care to restrict myself, to the exact details of construction, combination and arrangement'herein set forth, it be- 1 ing obvious that minor variations thereof, not
involving the exercise of invention, may
"be made by any-skilled mechanic, and such departures from what is herein described and claimed, I consider Within the scope and terms of my claims.
I claim:
1. As an article of manufacture, a combined cigar holder and ash receptacle, comprising an upper apertured shell forming the cigar holder, and a lower shell forming the ash receptacle, said upper shell being provided with a circumferential centering flange, portions of said flange being turned prising an upper shell forming the cigar holder, and a lower shellforming the ash receptacle, said upper shell being provided with a raised annular and apertured portion, theraised portion being provided with depressed portions for the reception of cigars, said upper shell being further provided with a circumferential centering flange, said flange being provided with a plurality of integral projections extending inwardly from the circumferentialedge of the holder, each projection being provided with ,holding means thereon, the lower shell being provided with a corresponding plurality of cars extending outwardly from the circumferential edge of the said lower shell, each ear being'provided with receivingmeans, the holding means in said projections adapted to snap into engagement with the--' receiving means in said ears when the two sections are rotated-in opposite directions.
This specification signed and witnessed this 25thday of August, 1916.
