Description
6. W. PROUTY.
TICKET PUNCH. APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 14. I918- i Gear Patented Aug. 5, 1919.
GEORGE W. PROUTY, or MILTON; MASSACHUSETTS.
TICKET-PUNCH.
Application filed September 14, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that GEORGE WV. a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Milton, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ticket-Punches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ticket punches and has for its object'the production of an effective tool of this character which will be simple in construction and cheap to make.
The invention consists in a punch, the body portion of which is made integral with a stripper interposed between the ends there- PROUTY,
of, one, of said ends being provided with a projecting cutting member adapted to coact with an o ening in the other end of said body portion.
The invention further consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be "readily understood by reference to the description of the drawings and to the claims to be hereinafter given. v
For the purpose of illustrating the invention, one preferred form thereof is illustrated in the drawings, this form having been found to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the Various instrumentalities of which the invention consists can be variously arranged and organized, and that the invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of the instrumentalities as herein shown and described, except as required by the scope of the appended claims.
Of the drawings:
Figure 1 represents an elevation of a ticket principles of the prespunch embodying the out invention.
Fig. 2 represents a transverse section of the same on line 2, 2, on Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 represents an enlarged longitudinal section of the working end of the punch, and
Fig. 4 represents a transverse section of the same on line 4:, 4, on Fig. 3.
Similar characters designate like parts throughout the several figures of the drawin s.
in the drawings 10 is the body portion of the punch made U-shaped of spring metal with the disconnected end portions 11 and 12 thereof parallel.
Specification of Letters Patent.
- at all times every operation Patented Aug. 5, 1919. Serial No. 254,376.
wlll not injure the hand when the device is of breaking the same in the constant use to which the punch will be subjected.
The end portion 12 is provided with a hole 16 111 Wl1l0l1 is positioned the shank 17' of the pro ecting cutting member 18 which is preferably cylindrical (but which may be of any shape) in cross section.
The outer end of the cutting member 18 is provided with a depression 19 leaving a cutting edge at the periphery of said cutting member.
The end portion 11 is provided with an opening 20 alined with the cutting member 18 and having the same shape and size as the cross section of said cutting member 18.
This end portion 11 is preferably hardened so that the wall of the hole 20 will coact with the knife edge of the cutting member 18 and effect the punching of any card board material inserted between the cutt ng member 18 and the inner face of the end'portion 11 whenever the operator forces the end portions 11 and 12 together by pressure upon the curved portions 14.
he end portion 11 being hardened the end of the cutting member 18 is kept sharp of the device tending to sharpen the cutting member whenever its end enters the hole 20.
The outer end of the hole 20 is enlarged as at 21 to facilitate the discharge of the portions punched from the card board ticket.
Between the end portions 11 and 12 is a stripper 22 preferably formed integral with the body portion 10 as shown in the drawlngs, this stripper 22 being provided with an opening 23 therein of greater diameter than the diameter of the cutting member 18.
The end of the portion 11 is curved at 24 and the end of the stripper 22 is curved .sure to the portions ting .member 18 through thecard board into the central plate of which is thinner downwardly as at 25 thus producing a Wide mouth which facilitates the insertion of the card board ticket into the slit between "the stripper and the inner face of the end portion 11.
The outer end of the cutting member 18 is normally within the hole'23 so that it Will not obstruct the insertion of the card :board ticket into the slit 26.
When a ticket has been inserted in :the slit 26 the operator applies gripping presla and i'oroes the cutthe device may be produced from a :Single bar by drop forging and when the hole '23 has been drilled therein the bar may be bent into the shape shown in the drawings and the holes 16 and 20 drilled in alinement.
T he cuttin member 18 ma then be driven into position through the hole 20 and the device is ready for use. This makes a very cheap construction of punch Which very effective in use and which will not readily become inoperative.
It is believed that the operation andmany advantages of the invention will be readily understood Without "further description.
Having thus described my invei'ition, I claim:
1. A ticket punch consisting of aiU shaped vcurved body portion having iormed integral therewith on its ends, -.three parallel plates, than the outer plates and said plates having alined openings therethrough, and a cutting member rigidly secured in one outer plate with its cutting end normally positioned within the opening in the central plate and adapted to enter the opening in the other outer plate when said outer platesare-torced toward eachother.
2. A ticket punch conslsting of a Ueshaped copies of this patent may be obtained forsfive cents curved body portion having formed integral therewith on one end a rigid bed plate and a stripper plateand on the other end a parallel cutter-supporting plate, all of said plates having alined openings therethrough, and a cutting member rigidly secured in the opening in the cutter-supportingplate with its cutting =end normally positioned in the opening in the stripper plate and adapted to coact with the openingziinthebed plate.
3. .A tic' ket pimchihaving a :U-shapedbody portion with-;=parallel;ends, one of which has a thickness considerably greater than the :t-hickness of :the other andais provided with a longitudinal i-slit with parallel-wallsitomned therein extending ;IE-EOHl-Slde to side thereof and alined openings in the upper and lower ,portions 10 S'aid thicker end perpendicular to said-Slit, the opening inithe outer portion being of less rcliameter than the opening in therother portion; anda cutting member rigidly secured in the thinner end in alinement with said openings {and with its outer end normally positioned in .the larger opening.
a. .A ticketypunch having a U-shaped body portion with parallel ends, oneot which is longer and has a thickness considerably greater {than the \thicknesspt ithejother and is provided with a longitudinal slit with parallel Walls vformed therein extending from side to "side thereof :and alined openings in the ,upper and lower ,portions of said thicker rend perpendicular to said slit, theiopening-inttherouter portion beingof less diameter than the opening in the'other portion which is ,proyided with adownturned .lip in front er the "thinner end; and acutiting aneinber irigidly secured .in the thinner end in alinement with said wopenings and with its outer end normally positioned in the larger opening.
