THOMAS PATTIE, F PONSONBY, AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND.
STRING-CUTTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 29,1919.
Application filed. February 4, 1918. Serial No. 215,295.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS PATTIE, a citizen of the Dominion of New Zealand, and residing at 8. Sarsfield street, Ponsonby,
in the Provincial District of Auckland, in
the Dominion of New Zealand, have invent- 1 ed certain new and useful Improvements in String-Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for cutting string after a parcel has been made up and tied therewith, and provides a cutter which can be fixed to any desired support ready for use.
The invention comprises a cutter having a blade fixed to a holder, which is adapted to be secured to a shop counter or other support in such a manner that the blade rises from the counter at a slight slope.
The invention is conveniently and advantageously constructed as shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure l, is a general arrangement in elevation of the invention fitted to a shop counter,
Fig. 2, is an elevation,
Fig. 3, a plan of the cutter, and
Fig. 4, is a cross sectional elevation on line l4:, Fig. 2.
The cutter comprises a holder 8 fixed to a counter 9 or other support by screws 10. The blade 11 is fixed to the sloping longitudinal wall of a recess in the under surface of the holder 8 by screws 12, and the blade, and that part of the holder to which the same is fixed, slope upward from the counter 9, and provide a space 13 for the entrance of the string 1 1 to be cut. The side and top of the outer portion of the holder are recessed and beveled immediately above the blade receiving recess, so as to leave the cutting edge available for cutting string.
In order that the string may be held taut during the cutting operation, a check is employed and may be said to comprise enerally two strips 15 and 16 one of whic is secured as at 16 to a convenient support.
Both of the strips are grooved longitudi- Copies of this patent may be obtained for nally leaving a hole, when connected together, to permit of the passage of the string therethrough. The strips are loosely connected'together at adjacent ends while a bolt 20 is arranged through the opposite ends and receives a spring 22 the tension of which is suitably governed to maintain the strips in the desired yielding relation.
The ball of string 26 is arrayed in a box 27 beneath thecheck while the outer portion 14: of the string is arrayed through a hole provided between strips of the check and also through a'hole 26 in the shop counter, so that after suflicient string for the tying of a parcel has been drawn, the operator passes the string into the space 13 and cuts the string b drawing the same over and across the bla e, the check of course holding the string sufficiently taut to insure of the cutting of the string by the blade.
What I do claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is In a cutter of the character described, in combination with a support a holder, the holder comprising a body the inner portion of which is fixed to the support while the under surface of the outer portion of the body slopes upwardly toward the outer end to leave a space, the outer portion of the body being provided with a recess opening at one side and the top of the body, the inner longitudinal wall of the recess sloping upwardly toward the upper surface of the body, the under surface of the body being also formed with a recess communicating with the first recess and, having an upwardly slopin longitudinal wall and a cutting blade fixed in the last mentioned recess and having its cutting edge parallel to the adjacent side edge of the arm.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
