To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN K. SEYMOUR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Elyria, county of Lorain and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in toys and more particularly to an improvement in Whirligig or bandalore toys. I aim to produce a toy of the class described capable of performing all of the operations of the bandalore toy and performing them better than those heretofore in use, and also Produ ing a device capable of performing other operations than those performed by such bandalore toys.

The objects of my invention and the man ner in which I perform such operations will be understood from a description of an embodiment of the invention.

Figure 1 is an elevation of an embodiment of my invention.

Fig. 3 illustrates the embodiment shown in Fig. 1 when used as a bandalore toy.

Referring now to the embodiment of my invention illustrated in the drawing, at 5 and 5 are shown the momentum elements of the device, here illustrated as two disks or fly wheels. These disks may be made of any suitable material, such as wood. I prefer to use wood, as it is cheap and easily formed into the desired shapes. The two disks are connected together by a pin 6 to which each is rigidly connected. The pin may be made of any suitable material, preferably of wood. The pin is provided with an opening 7 passing therethrough and preferably on a diameter thereof. The opening 7 should be midway between the two disks. The ends of the opening may be reamed at 8, 8 to prevent wear upon the cord.

The cord is shown at 9 made of any suitable material, such as fiber. The cord passes through the opening 7 and is preferably provided with a loop 10 intermediate its ends and hand loops 11, 12 on the ends.

lVhen it is desired to use the device as a banadlore toy, the two ends of the cord are placed together, as shown in Fig. .3 and the cords caught through the hand loops 11 and 12. WVhere the loop 10 is provided one of the hand loops 11 or 12 is passed through the loop 10', so that the main part 13 of the device is more firmlyconnected to the cord and the cord cannot slip through the opening. The loop 10 is best placed at about the center of the cord 9.

lVhen used in the manner shown in Fig. 4, the device may be looped upon the cord and rotated until the cord is wound up. If the ends of the cord are pulled in opposite directions the toy will be rotated until all of the cord is drawn out, when the momentum of the disks 5 and 5 will cause the part 13 to continue to rotate, winding up the cord in the other direction. By repeatedly pulling on the ends of the cords and releasing the same, the toy acts as a Whirligig, turning first in one direction and then in the other, winding and unwinding the cord. By placing the opening directly in the center of the pin and through the center of gravity of the device, it will hang perpendicularly and will not list when used as a bandalore toy, not only operating better, but the edges of the disks will not wear upon the cords. For the same reasons it will operate better as a Whirligig and will be less apt to rub and wear the cord.

I have shown this particular embodiment of my invention and these details for the purpose of better describing my invention. It will be understood that departures may be made from such form and details without departing from the spirit of the invention.

I claim 1. In a toy of the class described, the combination of a pair of equal-sized relatively heavy disks, a relatively short pin rigidly connecting said disks at their centers and spacing them apart, said pin provided with an opening passing through said pin on a diameter thereof and midway between said disks, the ends of said opening being flared and a cord passing through said opening provided with a hand loop on each end and a third loop substantially midway its ends. 2.
