Description
IE. H; HACKBIRT.
DISPENSING CONTAINER.
APPLICATION FILED OCT. 3l I9I7 Patented Ju1y`29, 1919.
UNITED) s'rArn-s PATENT ornrcn mainY n. Ziingoiisinr, or CLEVELAND, OHIO.
To Vall whom t may concern.'
`Be it known that L-EMIL H. 'I-IAcKBr-R'r,
`a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyaliogauand State` ofy Ohio, have inventedv aV certainv new 'and useful- 'Improvement' in -Dispensing- Containers, 'of which the v.followingA is a full, clear, and exact description,re erence being had to` the accompanying drawings. 10 f This invention relates v'to a holder or: con* tainer and dispenser for l such articlesy as candies, salted peanuts, butteredpopcornv and the like, or, in appropriate form, lfor cigarettes `or cigars; and it has `fornite general object to rovide a sanitary receptacle wherein suci articles as those above mentioned may befcontained and effectually protected from dust or dirt, and-in lthe case of candies, Asalted peanuts or thejlikefrom which the contents may be transferred directly fromthe holder or receptacle to the mouth without being touched by the hands, thereby protecting the edibles from the hands, and the hands from becoming soiled and sticky, and permitting` gloves to be worn while eating articles of a sticky or oily nature without danger of soiling the gloves.
More speciic objects of the invention are to provide a holder or container of the character above mentioned which is simple of construction, economical of production; convenient of use; durable; and wherein the only element that is liable of breakage through use may be easily duplicated and replaced by the user without expense.
Generally speaking, my invention may be said to consist of the combination of elements set forth in the claims :annexed hereto and illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the holder or container shown as grasped in a hand (indicated in dotted lines) to illustrate the method of using it; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary perspective of the holder with the cover raised; Fig. 3 is a central vertical section; Fig. 4, a horizontal section looking upward; Fig. 5, a perspective view of the slide and its manual actuator; and Fig. 6 is a similar view of the holder modified to cont-ain and dispense cigarettes.
The container 1 is shown as rectangular in plan and may be made of any suitable "speciation of Lttejsratent Patented July 29, 191e. Application ined october 31, 1917. serial No. 199,435.
material, such as tin, and is open at its upper end. The cover 2, flanged along its -front and side edges, is pivoted to the convthe adjacent wall portions of the container.
The. front flange of the cover may have a `depression ft for engagement with a recess 5 formed in the upper edge of the front wall ofthe container to hold the cover closed.
The cover has an aperture 6 near its free end, which is adapted to be closed by a slide 7, carried by the forward end of the inner branch S of a manual actuator 9. The outer branch of the actuator lies along the upper surface of the cover and is provided with a. thumb engaging loop 10 at its for- `ward end.' `Near lthe pivoted' end of the cover are a pair of opposed guides 12 between which the actuator is slidable. These guides overhang the end of the cover to protect the loop of the actuator. The forward end of the branch S of the actuator is hooked, as shown at 13, and the middle portion of a rubber band 14 passes through this hook and has its ends engaged over barbs 15 that are carried by the cover. The rubber band thus serves to normally maintain the slide in a position to close the aperture 6 and tends to hold the slide in contact with the inner surface of the cover. The upper edge of the rear wall of the container is notched at 16 for the accommodation of the branch 8 of the actuator.
In use, the holder or container is grasped in the hand,y as indicated in Fig. 1, with the thumb in front of the loop e-nd 10 of the actuator 9, and, when the user desires to help himself to its contents, pushes rearwardly on the actuator to uncover the aperture 6 and deposits a quantity directly into his mouth.
Fig. G shows the invention embodied in a cigarette case. In this instance the container is preferably made of a width to comfort-ably receive the cigarettes, and of a length to accommodate a given number, while its depth is substantially equal to the length of a cigarette. Here the slide may be operated to uncover the aperture through which one cigarette may be discharged at a time. Similar reference characters are used to designate corresponding parts in the two modifications, and in the latter case a tunnel loop is substituted for the guides 12 of the former modication.
Having thus described What I claim is l. A container of the character set forth comprising an open ended receptacle, a cover hingedly connected to the receptacle adjacent one side of its open end, the cover being provided with an aperture, a slide located on the inner side of the cover for closing said aperture, and an actuator for said slide consistingof a Wire having one of its ends connected to the slide and extending along the inner surface of the cover and about the hinged edge thereof and overlying the outer surface of the cover.
2. A container of the character set forth comprising an open ended receptacle, a cover hingedly connected to the receptacle adjacent one side of its open end, the cover being provided With an aperture, a Slide located on the inner side of the cover for closing said aperture, an actuator for said slide consisting of a wire having one of its ends connected to the slide and extending along the inner surface of the cover and about the hinged edge thereof and overlying the my invention,
outer surface of the cover, a guide for the actuator carried by the cover and overhanging the free edge thereof to protect the actuator Where it passes about sa1d edge of the cover.
3. A container of the character set forth comprising an open ended receptacle, a cover hingedly connected to the receptacle adjacent one side of its open end, the cover being provided with an aperture, a slide located on the inner side of the cover for closing said aperture, an actuator for said slide consisting of a Wire having one of its ends connected to the slide and extending along the inner surface of the cover and about the hinged edge thereof and overlying the outer surface of the cover, the end of the actuator adjacent the slide being formed into a hook, connecting means carried by the cover adjacent the lateral edges of the slide, and a rubber band having its ends engaged over said connecting means and its middle portion engaged over the hooked end of the actuator. Y
In testimony whereof, I hereunto aiiX my signature.
