COMBINED SWITCH AND CONNECTOR FOR ELECTRIC CIRCUITS.

T o all whom t may concern:
.Be it known that I, CARL BRAMMING, a citizenl of the United States, and resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Switches and Connectors for Electric Circuits, of which the following is a specification, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
The invention is particularly applicable for use in connection with automobile lamps, such as tail lamps or spot lights; its object being to provide a simple yet eflicient means for connecting the line wire to the lamp in such manner that the circuitmay be readily closed or opened without disconnecting the members of the device.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is hereinafter described, and is shown in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of the device;
Fig. 2 is a cent-ral section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, the circuit being closed;
Fig. 3 is an elevation of the device, partly in section, and showingthe circuit as open; and
Fig. 4 is asectional view on the line 4 1 of Fig.' 3.
There is shown a double ended socket 10, in tubular form, adapted to receive in one end a plug, such as the base 11 of an incandescent lamp, bayonet joint slots, as 12, being present for engagement by studs, as 13, on the plug or lamp base. Fixed transversely across the bore of the socket member is an insulating plate or block 14, carrying a spring contact member l5 for cooperating with the plug or lamp base 11, and a second rigid contact member 16 projecting in the opposite direction.
Upon the outer end of the contact element 16 there is fixed a sleeve 17, of insulating material, preferably havinga peripheral recess 18. While this recess 1s shown as and preferably has the form of an annular channel, for convenience in manufacture, its effective portions are those which are in line with the fingers 26, 27, hereinafter described.
The plug 19, adapted to coperate with the terminal 16, is shown as tubular in form and having fixed within its inner end a block 2O of insulating material, through which extends a conducting elementl 21, socketed in its outer end, as shown at 22, for receiving the leading-in wire, which may be held by means of a binding screw 23 entering laterally through the block 20.
To the inner end of the element 21 is fixed a pair of spring fingers 24, 25, which project toward the inner end of the plug 19 and are bent inwardly and then outwardl at their inner ends, as shown'at 26, 27. hese fingers are of such length and so spaced that when the plug is inserted they will pass over the sleeve 17 and impinge upon the body of the contact element 16, thereby closing the circuit. When the plug is partially withdrawn the inwardly bent portions 26, 27, of the fingers will enter the annular channel 18 in the sleeve, thus opening the circuit and, by their spring action, securely holding the plug in place.
Preferably the socket 10 is provided with a pair of bayonet joint slots, as 28, having two offset and longitudinally spaced shoulders 29, 30, for coperating with studs, as 31, and projecting laterally from the plug When the plug is fully inserted the studs 31 will engage the inner slot seat 29, and when partially withdrawn for the purpose of opening the circuit these studs will occupy the outer slot seats 30. Thisy slot and stud construction permits of the manipulation of the plug for opening and closing the circuit without the exercise of care for preventing the plug from being fully withdrawn from the socket.
I claim as n1 invention- 1. In a combined switch and connector for electric circuits, in combination, a socket having an insulated contact element in post form, a sleeve of insulating material mounted on the contact adjacent its end, a plug adapted to enter the socket, apair of spring contact fingers carried by the plug and adapted to slide over the sleeve and engage the body of the contact element, and means .for holding the plug in partially Withdrawn position with its contact fingers bearing upon the sleeve.
