Be it known that I, Oris L. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Iowa City, in the county of Johnson and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Electric Switches; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the saine, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, 1n-

This invention relates to an improvement in electric switches, and particularly to ignition switches for internal combustion engines such as used in automobiles, motor boats and other similar places, the object being to provide a permutation-controlled switch with selective means for cutting in the current from theA battery or from the magneto, as desired; and the invention consists in certain details of construction as .will be hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.
In illustrating my invention I have shown a switch box 8 in the form commonly used on the coil boxes of Ford cars for which this switch is particularly designed. In the usual construction of switch box contact points are provided for closing the circuit through the battery or through the magneto by means of a pivotal lever. Instead of having such contact points to be engaged by a lever as the selective means, I employ a walking beam lever 9 pivotally mounted in a yoke 10 one arm 11 extending into the forked outer end 12 of a binding post 13 which is connected by a wire 14 with the battery. The other arm 15 extends into line with the forked end Specification of Letters Patent.

16 of a binding post 17 which is connected by a wire 18 with the magneto. The arms 11 and l5 are respectively engaged by push buttons 39 and 40, these push buttons having inwardly projecting stems 41 which are guided through slots 42 in the insulated body 8, and these stems are formed with downwardly projecting actuating fingers 43 which engage with the arms of the walking beam lever so as to move one or the other, these buttons being normally thrown outward by springs 44 and 45. The yoke 10 is electrically connected by a wire 19 with a spring finger 20 which extends inward into the path and bears against a disk 21 of insulating material which is mounted upon a sleeve 22 this sleeve being in turn mounted upon a shaft 23 which carries a disk 24 of insulating material, these disks being adapted to be turned by knobs 25 and 26 respectively connected with the sleeve 22 and shaft 23. In the disk 21 is located a metallic contact block 27, and in the disk 2A is a similar contact block 28. The finger 2O is adapted to be engaged by the contact-block 27 as the disk 21 is rotated and also extending inward into the path of said block is a finger 29. This finger 29 is connected through a wire 30 with a finger 31 extending into the path of the block 28 in the disk 24 and also extending into the path of this block is a finger 32 which is connected by a wire 33 with a binding post 34 to which is connected a wire 35 leading to the spark coil. The disks 21 and 24 are formed in their edges with a series of notches and each at a predetermined point with a stop lug 36, and these disks bear upon spring buttons 37 and 38 which indicate to the operator the extent to which the disks 21 and 24 are to be turned to bring the contact blocks 27 and 28 into engagement with the respective fingers 20--29 and {fil-32 so as to close the circuit. The stop lugs 36 are of such a length that they cannot pass the push button that they form a starting point from which the disks are turned.
The disks having been turned so that the contact blocks register with their respective iingers, if it is desired to close the circuit through the battery, the push button 39 would be pressed inward throwing the arm 11 into engagement with the forked end 12 of the bindin post 13, so as to close the circuit throng the battery.
