This invention relates to a novel construction for the handles of screw wrenches, and
to the peculiar manner of forming and combining the several parts of the handle with each other and with the shank of the `wrench-bar; theobject being to provide a strong, comparatively light and desirable metal handle that can be manufactured eco- Y nomically and with practical facility.,
Also, to provide a wrench-handle having a comparatively thin tubular exterior gripmember of uniformly drawn or wrought metal tubing, with a skeletonized support therefon combined in an efficient manner for withstanding hard service in use.
I attain these objects by a wrench-handle embodying vthe construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings and hereinafter explained, the particular features claimed being hereinafter definitely specified.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a side view of a screw-wrench, provided with a handle embodying my invention, the exterior member of the handle being shown in section. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal central section on line W W on Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the tubular shell separated. Fig. 4 is an end view of the tubular shell. Fig. 5 is a cross section at line X X, and Fig. 6 is a cross section at line Y Y on Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates the wrench-bar, and 2 the reduced shank of said bar, which is made of well known form with Hat sides and parallel rounded edges as shown. The cast metal handle frame H, which is combined with said shank is, in accordance with my present improvement, composed of a neck-supporting furrule 3 with the usual bearing s tep 4 vfor the jaw-adjusting screw S, and having a circumferential reduction and shoulder 5 around its lower end; also having integrally attached longitudinal shank-embracing edgemembers 6 that are connected at an intermedial position across each side of the bar- Speciication of Letters Patent.

receiving space by a cross-tie 7; the lower ends of said edge-members being also united by an open centered disk or crosstie 8. Upon each side of the handle-frame I provide projecting brace members 9 or edgewise outstanding longitudinal ribs, their ends integrally connected with the furrule 3 and end disk 8 and with the cross-ties 7.
The interior longitudinal opening l0 in the handle is breached out to lit the wrenchbar shank 2, the parallel edge members 6 embracing the rounded edges thereof. and the inner faces of the longitudinal brace member 9 and cross-ties 7 seating against the flat sides of the shanl For giving exterior form to the handle, I provide a grip portion 12 consisting of a piece of straight hollow drawn or wrought tubing of substantially uniform thickness and comparatively light weight, sayrone sixteen-th inch gage, more or less, and preferably of oval cross section (see Figs. 4L and 5.) The outer faces of the edge members 6 and side braces 9 Aare dressed olf or formed to accurately fit against the inner surface of the tubular shell 12. The ends of the tubular shell respectively abut against the shoulders 5 and 13,
formed on the furrule 3 and tip-piece 15, while the reduced portion adjacent said shoulders fits within the end of the tubular grip member 12 and supports the end thereof circumferentially.
The handle frame H is secured to the wrench-bar shank 2 by the usual pin or key 16 inserted through or below the cross-ties 7 and the tip 15 is riveted upon the end of the shank and firmly against the end of the tubular member 12, lthe whole making a neat, serviceable and eicient handle structure which can be manufactured and assembled with practical economy and facility.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A wrench-handle having its exterior grip surface composed of straight hollow drawn wrought-metal tubing of uniform thickness, in combination with a skeleton handle-frame provided integrally with a plurality of outstanding longitudinal ribs, the exterior faces of which are formed to fit against the interior surface of said tubing.
2. A wrench-handle having its exterior grip portion formed of a section of hollow drawn tubing of uniform thickness and oval cross-section, in combination with a handleframe having longitudinal bar-supporting members and laterally projecting brace members, the outer faces of which fit against the interior surface ofv said tube, the ends of the tubular section being supported by an offset surface and shoulder on the handleframe furrule and tip member respectively.
3. A handle for screw-wrenches, comprising a comparatively thinV straight tubular metal shell of approximately uniform thickness, and a handle-frame including a necksupporting ferrule with integrally attached longitudinal shank-embracing edge-members, cross-ties connecting said members, and integrally formed projecting'brace-members disposed along the sides of the frame; said frame having a longitudinal opening therethrough for reception of and to vlit the wrench-bar shank, the exterior of said edgemembers and projecting brace-members being fitted to seat against the interior surface of said tubular shell.

A handle for screw-wrenches, including an intergrally cast metal handle-frame, comprising a neck-supporting ferrule with screw-bearing step and an annular shoulder, longitudinal edge-supporting members, and lateral projecting side-bracing members, the outer faces of said members formedto'regular handle contour along' the length of said frame, cross-ties integrally connecting said members, an internal opening through said vframe the walls of said opening adapted to fit the edges and sides of a wrench-bar shank; an exterior shell or grip consisting of comparatively thin wrought metal, of uniform gage, internally fitting and supported upon the projecting members of said frame, and a tip-memberfor confining said shell upon the handle-frame, having an annular oifset and shoulder, and means for securing the same upon a wrench-bar shank.
5. In a wrench-handle, the combination, of an integrally formed handle-frame consisting of the neck-supporting ferrule having an annular rabbet and shoulder about its lower end, attached longitudinal edgeembracing members connected at the sides by intermedially disposed cross-plates and united at their lower ends; edgewise outstanding brace-members between said cross- 4plates and the end portions of said frame,
the interior of said edge-members and bracemembers seating upon the wrench-bar'shank, said yshank extending through the handleframe, the outer faces of the edge-members and brace members formedy to a longitudinally straight transversely curved contour, an exterior hand-grip shell consisting of a straight uniformly thin wrought metal tube fitting and supported upon the outer faces of said handle-frame members, and a retaining tip fixed upon the end of the shank and concentrieally engaging the end of said tubular shell.
