To all whom/ it may conceriw .7
of Chicago, in Cookrounty" andState of Illinois, have invented an Improvement in Work-Holders for the Sealing of Cartons, of which the followingdescription, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like'parts. I "if This invention" relates to a "work holder or bench to be usedin connection j with the sealing of fiber cartons or the like, which operation comprisesthe preparation of cartons for packing with goods to'be shipped therein and the final'closure of these car-' tons after packing and preparatorytoshipment. This invention, hereinafter described,
consists in a new form of bench, the first arrangement being adapted for use when making'up cartons preparatory to packing and the second arrangement for usewhen finally sealing the cartons so packed,
In carrying out this invention means are provided for the support of a gummed tape moistening machine from which moistened adhesive tape is drawn to be applied to the cartons. The same meansalso support a supply of liquidadhesive, and further'form a convenient support for a'pair ofweights used inithe'sealmg operation. Mean's are also provided adjacent the' first named means for holding the carton to be sealed,
said means jconsisting ofjadjustable stands integralwith thebench and so constructed that regardless ofthe size of the carton placed thereon a fixed relation will be maintained'between the .cartons and the bench.
The objects of this arrangement as above outlined are to so correlate the various parts that cartons may be seale'd with a minimum of time and labor, that the bench may be adjustable in order to accommodate different sized cartons, that the sealing may be accomplished without "waste of tape. used, and that certain =shipp1ng requirements,-
hereinafter referred to,may be easily complied with; I
Numerous eificient devices'have been developed'for moistening and delivering adhesive' strips for sealing boxes or cartons butthe work of sealing" such cartons "is greatly hindered through lack of any eflt cient'de vice for holding the'cartons while being sealed. Where a greatnumber of carton, in handling'and in applying the paste V tons are sealed a slight delayoneaGhCar Be it known that 1,;ARTIiUnE. ,RInnoU'nf a citizen of the United States, and ares dent and-tape constitutes a serious objection to y the useof this method of packing and shippurg -goods. To. overcome the diificulties suggested, the present construction has been devised. I 'am aware th'ather eto'forea stand provided .with a serles of interchangeable tops has been used over which cartons are made up ready for packing. My invention contemplates, the improvement of such a be used therewith.
For-purposes of illustration have seing adapted'for making up acartons preparatory. to packing; 1 i
Fig. 2 'sarplan of. three interchangeable tops or heads, showing the means of attacha ment to the stand member of the bench;
standand the provision of further means to Fig. 3 is a plan top view'of a bench as in V Fig. 1, showing the relation of the various parts and the interchangeable tops or heads inoutline.
Fig. 4c is a perspective of a bench adapted Fig. 5 1st plan top View bruit form a fornse when finallysealingthe packedcar- 7 tons preparatory to shipment a Fig. dis a detail of means for adjusting a cross baror stop on the @bench shown in Fig.1.
Referring to the drawings, it will be seen' that the improved bench, calledin the'trade a sealing bench, consists of a stationary L- shaped top member a supported from the floor by. legs I; at a height which. will prove most convenient for the operator. It has been found by experiment that a height of thirty five inches will enable the operator to work efficiently. A machine 0 for delivering gummed tape, moistened andready to 1 apply, is mounted upon the short arm'of the L-shaped bench; The long arm of the L- shaped bench forms a convenient support for a pair of weights (1 which are used in the sealing operationfand at the extremityof this long arm a paste pot e is located.
Adjacent to" the L-shaped-ben'ch and permanently fastened thereto by suitable means is a-stand f adapted to hold the carton to be sealed. In the form of the present invention adapted for use when making up the bottoms of the cartons. this stand-:(as
in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive) consists of tWo-- uprights suitably braced and joined at the top. Means areprovided on the top of this stand for "securing varying sized inter changeable tops or heads thereto, the said means beingherein shownas a cleat' h. Top
pieces or hea'ds and 7a (Fig.2), adapted to besecured to the I stand are provided for each size of carton to besealedfl These top pieces have means of attachment corresponding to the means ofattachment on the stand, saidf means "being shown herein as cleats l adaptedto interlock with the cleat h.
It is i important that" each tolp as it is placed upon'the stan d have a fixedmelation' to the lo'ng and p arms of the A L-bench",
for Y purposes here1n'aftr mentioned; This result is accomplished by placing the cleats Z uponithe top pieces t'; 7' and ft with refer ence only tothe sidesfm andn of each top:
This initur'n insnres the proper positioning" of each top with relation to the long and and Z are so constructed With reference to 5 the height of the stand asto bring the tops to aleVel Eiviththe Lshaped bench. v
In the formof the stand member 7 shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, a stop o in the form of a crossbar is provided and isimade adjustablein relation to the top of the'stand" memben" This adjustment is accomplished consisting of alever sfpressed against the side ofthe slot opposite the-teeth by a coiled spring t. Itis obviohs"that means other thanthemeans herein shown may be em ployed to accomplish this adjustment. The
purpose of providingtthis stop or cross 0 Will appfarentfrom a description of'the use of this bench. hereinafter given.
Inthesecond' arrangement of a bench em body'ing the presentinvention, sho-Wndn Figsyl and 5, the L-shaped benchrem'ains the same but thest'and is-made in the form of a pIai heIf forthe 'purposeof holding a packed carton during the operation of finally closing and sealing the same. This:
benchor shelf u is made adjustablewith reference to the top of the- L-shaped bench, means of adjustment being herein shown as hollow'l'posts v, stationarylwith respect to themain bench, and posts to attached to the hell? u d slida'bl e in the hollow posts'o.
By means of Winged bolts threaded in the posts 1; and adapted to bear upon the posts 10 the shelf,1nay.- be secured 1n any'rdesirecl position. This positionsvill be such as Will bring the top of the box to be sealed to a leverwanthe topofthe L-bench. In order that the box to be sealed may bequickly positioned upon the shelf a two cleats y and .2 are attached to the shelf a as shown in Fig. 5. These cleats'against which thebox or carton is placed, are arrange to position the carton at distances" of four and five inchesrespectively from the long and short arms of ltheL bench.
Fiben-cartons are delivered to' the user collapsed and before packing goods therein itis first necessary" to make up the bottoms 'of the cartons. Whenfthe improved bench 1 herein shown isused n connection w th this Work theoper'at1on conslsts'ln first selecting one of the interchangeabletops which will fit exactly insidethe eXpande'd carton. The
top selected is then placed-on the stand memher 7 (Figs; 1 to 3) andfheld thereon by. the eleats h and Z.- The carton blank is then slipped down over the stand 7 and the stop or cross bar 0 so adjusted 'thatithefiaps of the open end of the-box Will'frest thereon and support the carton, as shoWnin Fig 1. It will be seen that this stop. or cross bar 0,
having been adjusted ito the first carton of a number'of the'same sizeto be s ealedfvvill automatically positionall subsequent cartons of that-size. Tlie flapsof the carton which will form. the bottom thereof are then folded down upon the top: of the stand.
Liquid adhesive is applied; between these flaps and the weights. al are placed thereon crosswise of the box to hold :the 'flaps to. gethrwvhile'the pasteis drying. Str-ips of The Weights are :then ,placed'} a-rallel Vito the centensean'tof the botto'mgof theg box and another strip of adhesive tape is pasted I j p e j adhesive tape are drawn front the gummed tape' supplying machme c and pastedcross- \vlse ofthe 'box at the ends and 111 the center.
length-Wise of the boxover this centerseam.
Transportation comp anies; req1u-1re that Q the tape used in jsealingthese cartonsshall overlap the sides of the cartontwo and one halfinches. To -comply With this require ment the cleats h and Z and the stand f are so arranged that eachof the-- interchan e-j. able tops yvill be positioned exactly;- ve
inches' from the, short arm-.of-the L-shaped bench; It willthus be apparent-that if the stripls drawvnfr'omthe machine 0 to the farther end of the carton and then cut' oil? at the machine just enough extra tape will be provided to "-takecare of this over-lap. of tape. 7
When the cartons are fpacked; and wreadyx to be finally closed preparatory. to shipment the form of the stand 7" shown in Figs. at and is used, and itsuse in this connection consists 1n first adjusting the shelf to so that the top of the cartons to be placed thereon will be on a level with the top of the L-' shaped bench. The carton to be sealed is then placed upon the shelf and pushed into the corner formed by the cleats y and e.
ed and a strip of tape is drawn from the a machine to the farther end of the boxand,
because the box is positioned by the cleats y and z, the tape will be long enough to over lap the sides as required. The shelf a can be adjusted for different sizes of cartons by raising or lowering it as desired.
It will be seen from the foregoing description that the present invention contemplates a bench of peculiar construction adapted to hold diflerent sizes of cartons in such a manner with relationto the material used that the sealing of the cartons may be accomplished in a most efficient manner. The carton is held in such relation to the materials used in sealing that there is little if any lost motion on the part of the operator; the machine for delivering gummed tape be ing directly infront of the operator so that strips may be pulled therefrom conveniently, the carton being held in such relation to the gummed tape machine that the strip as drawn out is automatically measured by the size of each box, the weights being supported adjacent to the box and in a convenient position for the operator, and the supply of paste being also located at the most convenient point.
I claim as my invention:
1. A device for holding and sealing cartons, combining a stand adapted to support a carton to be sealed, a bench adjacent one side of said, stand for supporting a tapeholder, carton-positioning means fixed on said stand, a set of members for supporting cartons of different sizes, and means on each member cooperating with said carton-positioning means and so located that all of the cartons are supported at the same distance from said tape-holder, the distance between carton and tape-holder serving as a measure of the length of tape needed including overlap.
2. A device for holding and sealing cartons, combining a stand adapted to support a carton to be sealed, a bench comprising a portion adjacent one side of said stand for supporting a tape-holder, cleats on said stand, a set of plates for supporting cartons of different sizes, cleats on each plate cooperating'with said first-named cleats and so located that all of the cartons are supported at the same distance from said tape-holder, whereby the cartons may be held in predetermined tape-affixing relation to said bench, the distance between carton and tape-holder being equal to twice the overlap of the tape, and the stand being at substantially the height of the top of the carton.
' In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
