nnrrnn STATES Year" APPARATUS FOR PLAYING TABLE AND LIKE GAMES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 22, 1919.
Application filed April 10, 1919. Serial No. 288,986.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT SAMUEL ILns, residing at Leamington Road, Gravelly Hill, in the city of Birmingham, England, subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Relating to Apparatus for Playing Table and like Games, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to apparatus for playing table and like games of skill of the type in which a ball or its equivalent is played over the table or playing surface by the use of key levers or other devices manipulated by the opposing players. More particularly the invention relates to apparatus of the type in which hinged portions of the table or playing surface movable by levers serve as the ball or like'propelling or arresting devices.
In the accompanying sheet of explanatory drawings Figure 1 is a plan and Fig. 2 a longitudinal section of the playing apparatus constructed in accordance with this invention.
Figs. 3 and 4 are respectively side and end elevations of one of the ball propelling and arresting devices or flaps showing means for preventing the balls from rolling under the same.
In carrying the invention into eflect as shown, for the playing of a game of the football class, or wherein a ball is played between opposing goal posts a or the like, the movable portions 1) of the table 0 which serve as the ball propelling and arresting devices, are made of a semi-circular or other flap like form. The said flaps are arranged in pairs and are hingedly connected at their adjacent straight edges to the table or playing surface, of which they form a part. At each end of the table are arranged groups of operating keys or levers d. One flap in each pair is actuated from one end of the table, and the other flap from the opposite end. Each lever 05 is connected to a flap by a tension rod or wire 6 which is attached to a projection g from the under side of the flap adjacent to the hinged edge. Depression of the lever causes the flap to swing upward about its hinged edge. One player operates one set of keys while the opposite player operates the other set.
The flaps or playing elements are arranged on the table or playing surface in positions correspondin to the positions of the players in the footbafi or like game represented, and the respective elements are arranged so that their movements direct the ball toward or away from the goals with which they are associated.
When the ball is in play elevation of the flap with which the ball comes in contact propels the ball away from the player who actuated the flap. The other player then attempts to drive the ball back by the action of another flap. The ball is thus kept moving over the table, and each player attempts to project the ball through his opponents goal.
To prevent the ball from rolling under an elevated flap each flap has attached to its under side wire guards 7 which rise with the flap and obstruct the ball if it happens to get behind the flap. Fig. 3 shows by dotted lines an elevated flap and the position occupied by the guards when the flap is raised.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is -1. In playing apparatus for table and like ball games, the combination comprising a playing surface, pairs of ball propelling and arresting flaps hinged along adjacent edges and movable in opposite directions, projections from the undersides of the flaps, operating levers arranged in two grou s, and tension members connecting the ap projections to the operating levers, substantially as described.
2. In playing apparatus for table and like ball games, the combination comprising a playing surface, pairs of ball propelling and arresting flaps hinged along adjacent edges and movable in opposite directions, operating levers arranged in two groups, one flap in each pair being connected to a lever in one of said groups and the other flap to a lever in the other group, and wire guards attached to the underside of each flap, said guards being arranged to prevent the ball from rolling beneath a flap when elevated, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
ALBERT SAMUEL IL'ES.
