To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK H. EOGDA, a citizenof the United States, and resident of Burnett, in the county of Dodge and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stock-Watering Bowls of which the followin is a description, re erence being had to t e accompanying drawin s, which are a part of this specification.
he invention relates to stock watering bowls.
Stock watering bowls now constitute part of the sanitary equipment of a barn or stable, the bowls being connected to a common source of supply. Prior to my invention, it had been customary to provide permanently attached water drinking bowls for cattle. Inasmuch as valve mechanism and valve actuating mechanism were inclosed or encompassed by these bowls, it was extremely d iiiicult to clean out a bowl, the parts within the bowl interfering with the cleansing operation. In fact, practice has demonstrated that the lixed type of bowl or bucket requires a cover to aid in keeping the bowl or bucket clean.
Recognizing the objections existing in the old type of stock watering bowl, i. e., bowls more especially adapted for cows, I have devised a means for the free bodily removal of the bowl from the member to which it is normally connected and by which it is normally supported, together with adaptability, after the bowl is bodily removed from its support, for the readjustment of the bowl to a releasably locked position with all of the parts in their normal operative position. In other words, in my construction it is not necessary to turn out screws or remove bolts or similar devices employed in permanently fastened bowls.
It is the primary object of my invention to provide an improved construction of bodily removable and replaceable bowl, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
With the above primary object, and other incidental objects, in view, the invention consists of the devices and parts, or the equivalents thereof, as hereinafter more fully set forth.

In general, the device comprises, in comblnatlon with a supply pipe, a bowl, means for detachably securing the bowl to the pipe, a valve for controlling the supply of water to the bowl, and means for controlling the operation of the valve.
The supply pipe consists of a pipe in inverted U-shaped form having vertically extendlng portions 4 and 5 connected by a transverse 'portion 4', said pipe ,adapted to be connected at either end of the portion 4 to a source of supply. In the drawings I show the upper end of this pine connected to a supply pipe 6 and the lower end is shut oli"l by a plug though it will be understood that the water may be led in from either en The bowl comprises a receptacle 8 which may be of any desired shape but the back portion 9 of which is formed with an outwardly curved intermediate portion 10 embracing the portion 5 of the pipe and a laterally extending shoulder 11 for a purpose hereinafter described. The bowl is designed to be slip-pcd up on to the pipe section 5 so that its back portion is disposed between two branches of the supply pipe. To insure the proper position of the bowl on the portion 5 I provide laterally extending lugs l2, 13 and 14 engaging the inner side of the curved portion 10 of the bowl, a lug l5 on the portion 4 of the pipe engaging the outer side of the curved portion 10 of the bowl and a lug 16 dependent from the transverse portion 4 of the pipe and engaging in a notch 17 in the top of the bowl whereby the bowl is held against upward and lateral movement with respect to the plpe.
While so positioned the bowl is detachably secured in this position by means of a gravity actuated latch 18 pivotally mounted on the lower end of the pipe section 4 by a pin 19 mounted in a lu 20 on said pipe. The ends 20 of this late adjacent the pin are curved to allow it to -swing upwardly against the side of the pipe but are squared at their lower portions to engage shoulders 2l on the pipe to limit the downward movement of said latch. The latch is provided with a transverse portion 22, the ends thereof projecting toward the pipe section 5 in the forni of lingers 23, to constitute handles to permit of the lifting of the latch. The transverse portion 22 is formed with an angular edge for engaging the shoulder 11 of the bowl. lith this connection to attach the bowl it is slipped up under and past the latch, the latch moving upwardly into the dotted line position shown in Fig. 1 and the bowl moved upwardly into position within the guide lugs of the pipe section until the notch 17 strikes the lug 16, at which time the latch automatically drops down beneath the shoulder on the bowl and the bowl is thus secured to the pipe by an interlocking slip-on connection obviating the necessity of any bolts or screws. The bowl may be readily detached by lifting it up slightly and disengaging the latch from the shoulder 11 to permit the bowl to be slipped downwardly beneath the pipe. The attaching and detaching of the bowl may be done in a few seconds time and when detached th`e bowl can' be readily cleaned.
The valve for controlling the How of water to the bowl comprises a hollow plug 25 having threaded engagement with the lower end of the portion 5 of the pipe and having a conical valve seat 2G and a ball valve 27 mounted on said seat. This valve is held to its seat by the pressure of the water acting thereon but to keep it in line with the seat and make its closing action positive I provide a plun er 28 slidably guided in inwardly exten ing oppositely disposed lugs 29 in said pipe, said plunger having spherical recess 30 in its lower end resting upon the ball 27.
In Fig. 4 I have shown a form of valve in which a rubber valve head 27 is seated in the plug 25 and is secured on the end. of the plunger 28 by a rod 28 and nut 29.
The means for controlling the operation of the valve comprises a presser plate 31 pivotall mounted intermediate its ends upon a ug 32 at the lower end of the branch 5 of the pipe,V the weight of the extended rtion of the plate being counter-balanced y a. weighted lug 33 on the inner end of the plate. This plate carries an upstanding pin 3-1 which extends into the hollow of the plug 25 and is adapted to engage the ball and lift it from its seat or to engage the lower end of the plunger valve in Fig. 3 to permit water to pass into the bowl, the presser plate bein@r automatically operated by the animal i us ing its nose down on it.
Preferably t e valve and its operating mechanism are connected tothe pipe and that on the removal of the bowl immediate access may be had to these parts and that the bowl due to its connection may be readily kept in a sanitary condition.
am aware that the details of construction herein shown and described may be varied or changed but such modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims I deeni to be within the spirit of my invention.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a stock watcrlng bowl, the combination of a supply pipe having a valve-controlled dischar portion, a bowl, the valvecontrolled disciirge portion of the supply pipe extending into the bowl closp to the wall of said bowl, means within the bowl constructed, when operated, to open the valve mechanism, a freely engageable and disengageable holding means between the supply pi Je and the bowl, said means releasably holding and supporting the bowl in a normal horizontal position, the engagement of the holding means being with that portion of the bowl which is close to the valvecontrolled discharge portion of the supply pipe, said holding means permitting of the free movement of the bowl toward and to its normal horizontally supported position, but bein free to be disengaged so as to permit of tlie complete bodily withdrawal of the bowl, and coperating means between the bowl and the supply pipe for reventing lateral movement of the bowl whi e engaged by the holding means.
2. In a stock wateringl bowl, the combination of a supply pipe aving a valve-controlled discharge portion, a bowl, the valvecontrolled discharge portion of the supply pipe extending into the bowl at a point close to the wall of the bowl, the wall of said bowl at said point being curved to conform to the curvature of the discharge portion of the supply pipe, means within the bowl, constructed, when operated, to open the valve mechanism, a freely engageable and disengageable holding means between the supply pipe and the bowl, said means releasably holding and supporting the bowl in a normal horizontal position, the engagement of the holding means being with the rounded portion of the bowl, said holding means permitting of the free movement of the bowl toward and to its normal horizontally supported position, but being free to be disengaged so as to permit of the complete bodily withdrawal of the bowl, and projecting members between the discharge portion of the supply pipe and the rounded portion of the bowl, to prevent lateral movement o'f the bowl.
