LOUIS ALIBAUM, 0F EVERETT, MASSACHUSETTS.
PISTON -RI1\'|'G COMPRESSOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 15, 1919.
Application filed January 22, 1919. Serial No. 272,531.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS ALBAUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Everett, in the county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Piston-Ring Compressor, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention relates to piston-ring compressors of that type which comprises a flexible pistonring-compressing element adapted to encircle the piston-ring, and a pair of tongs-like or plier-like elements engaging the flexible piston-ring-compressing element and operating to tighten the same around the piston-ring to compress the latter; and the object of the invention is to provide an improved device of this nature which is simple and inexpensive to manufacture and which is thoroughly efficient in operation and which has other advantages, all as will be more fully hereinafter set forth.
In order to give an understanding of my invention, I have illustrated in the drawing a selected embodiment thereof which will now be described, after which the novel features will be pointed out in the appended claims.
The single figure in the drawing shows in. perspective a piston-ring compressor embodying my invention.
In the drawing A indicates a piston-ring to be compressed, the piston which is associated with. said ring being omitted for the sake of clearness.
My improved piston-rin 'compressor comprises a pist-on-ring-compressing element in the form of a wire, cable or cord D and a novel tongs-like element E which is connected to the ends of the cord D. This tongs-1ike element E comprises two levers 2 and 3 pivotally connected at l, said levers having the jaws 5 and 6, respectively. The jaw 6 of the lever 3 is provided at its ends with the laterally-extending flange B having an aperture therein through which the cord D extends, the end G of said cord being enlarged in some suitable way to prevent it from pulling through the aperture. The jaw 5 of the lever 2 is provided with the flange portion '7 against which the cable D is adapted to rest and the clamp F constructed to clamp adjustably the cord to theflange '7. Said jaw 5 is also provided at its end with an open-ended guiding slot 8 through which the cable 'or cord D extends and which guides it to the clamp F. This slot 8 is formed by providing the jaw 5 with the finger G ex tending parallel to the flange 7 at theend thereof. The clamp F is in the formof an arm 9 which extends substantially parallel to the flange 7 and a clamping screw which is screw-threaded in said arm and is adapted to be screwed against the cord D. The arm 9 projects in a direction opposite to the finger C so that said arm holds the cord in the slot 8 and the finger C and slot hold the cord under the arm 9.
In using the device, the clamp F is loosened and the cord or cable is drawn through the slot 8 and clamp 9 until it fits snugly around the piston-ring, as shown in the drawing, and the clamp is then tightened.-
The application of pressure to the levers 2 and 3 will close the jaws and thus operate through the cord to compress the pistonring in a well-known way. The use of the open slot 8 and the form of clamp- F enables the cord D to be readily removed from the jaw 5 whenever it is desired to do so by simply withdrawing the cord out through the open end of the slot and oubfrom under the arm 9.
I claim:
1. A piston-ring compressor comprising a flexible piston -ring-compressing element adapted to encircle a piston ring and a tongs-like element having two jaws, one of 1 which is provided with a laterally-extending apertured flange through whichone end of the flexible member extends and the other of which is provided with a supporting flange, a clamp for clamping the other end of said flexible member thereto, and a guiding slot through which the flexible member extends.
2. A piston-ring compressor comprisin a flexible cord adapted to encircle a pistonring and a tongs-like element having two jaws, one of which is provided with an apertured lateral flange through which one ,end of the flexible cord passes and the other one of which is provided at its end with a guiding slot to receive said cord. and means for clamping the cord adjusta'bly to said other aw. J 3. A piston-ring compressor comprising a flexible cord, two levers pivotally connected; together intermediate of their ends and each provideclwith a jaw, one jaw having a laterally-extending apel'tul'ecl flange at its end 5 through which the flexible cord extends, and the other jaw having a supporting flange,
an arm extending parallel to said flange, a. clamping screw screw-threaded through said arm and adapted to clamp the cord to the flange, and a guiding slot at its end to guide 10 the cord to the clamping means.
LOUIS ALBAUM.
