TOILET-POWDER PACKAGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 15, 1919.
Application flied September 1, 1917. Serial No. 189,266.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE J. ALnxANDnE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of \Vest Haven, in the county of Orange and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toilet- Iowdcr Packages. of which the following is a specification.
The invention pertains to a toilet package containing toilet powder and a puff, and it resides in the novel features and structure hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The toilet package of my invention comprises a container or pouch having flexible sides, a bottom and a top adapted to hold a powder puff and likewise to be perforated when in the hands of a consumer so that the contents of the package may be caused to move upwardly through the perforations and against the puff, said top being secured around its edges by an adhesive to the inner wall of said pouch so that no powder may escape from the pouch around the edges of said top, this being one of the essential features of my invention. The container or pouch will be filled from the bottom thereof, and said bottom will then be sealed, so that the powder within the pouch will, until the pouch has reached the consumer, be confined within a sealed container. I preferably ex tend the material of the pouch above the aforesaid top so that said material may be folded inwardly upon the powder puff and be secured by an ornamental seal, and the package as a whole will be inclosed within a suitable box in which the package may be marketed and within which it may be retained during the use of the package. The pouch will preferably be made of flexible paper, and the bottom of the pouch will be strengthened by cardboard or the like, While the top of the pouch will be formed of suitably stifi' cardboard or the like. When the package is in the hands of the consumer the exterior box will be opened and the folded in upper portion of the pouch will be opened out and thereupon the consumer will remove the puff and, by means of a hatpin, bodkin or the like, perforate the cardboard top within the pouch; after this has been done the powder pull may be lightly tapped upon the perforated cardboard top and this will cause the powder to be moved upwardly through the perforations in said top and against the puff. As the powder becomes used, the walls of the pouch, being flexible, may collapse so as to permit the perforated top to follow down against the powder until all of the powder has been used.
One object of the invention is to provide a powder receptacle which remains sealed until in the hands of the consumer and then continues to remain sealed until all the powder has been used, except at the perforations which the consumer will form in the cardboard top of the package.
The perforated top will have no movement along the inner walls of the package but will be caused to follow down on the powder due to the flexibility of the pouch.
The invention will be fully understood from the detailed description hereinafter presented, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a pack age embodying my invention, the lid for the exterior box being shown as having been raised from the body of the box so as to expose the top of the toilet package proper,
Fig. 2 is a perspective view, partly broken away, showing the package as having had the upper portions of the pouch opened upwardly so as to expose the powder pufi' Fig. 3 1s a vertical section through the same taken on the dotted line 33 of Fig. l;
It illustrates the condition after the pulrhas been removed from the package, the cardboard top perforated and the puff restored to the package;
Fig, 4 is a top view of the same, with the powder puff removed, and
Fig. 5 is a bottom view of the flexible pouch or container.
In the drawings 10 designates the exterior box, and 11 the cover therefor, and this box may be of any suitable size and general character so long as it is adapted to receive and afford protection for the toilet package proper, .which comprises a flexible pouch 12 to hold the powder 13 and having a bottom 14 and a top 15. The pouch 12 may be formed of flexible paper and the top 15 of cardboard. Said top 15 has outwardly extending sides 16 which convert the top into a receptacle to receive the powder puff 17. The sides 16 of the top 15 are secured by an adhesive firmly against the inner walls of the pouch 12, suliicient space being left below the top 15 to receive an adequate quantity of the powder 13. The material of the pouch 12 extends upwardly above the pufl' 17 to a sufficient extent to permit the upper portion of the pouch to be folded in- \vardly upon said pufl and neatly secured by a seal 18, as shown in Fig. 1.
The bottom of the pouch 12 is formed of a piece of cardboard 19 having an open central portion 20 and by a paper seal 21. The lower edges of the material of the pouch 12 are folded inwardly against and secured bly an aidhesive to the outer edge portion of t is car, board 19,, and at this stage the openinf; 20 is exposed to receive the powder 13, w ich is filled in through the bottom of the pouch and a ainst the top 15, the pouch being inverted wdiile bein filled. After the powder 13 has been introduced to the pouch through the opening 20 a paper seal 21 1s secured by an adhesive over substantially the entire bottom of the pouch, this paper 21 closing the opening 20 and being secured to the cardboard 19 and a ainst the inwardly folded edges of the ottom of the material of the pouch 12. After the powder has been filled within the pouch and the bottom sealed, the pouch may be restored to its upright position and the puff 17 may then be applied Within the receptacle formed by the top 15, and thereupon the upper eX- tend'in portions of the pouch may be folded inwa'r y over the puff and secured by the seal 18. The package may then be placed within the box 10, when it will be ready for the market.
An important feature of the invention is that the pouch, until in the hands of a consumer is a securely sealed package, and another important feature of the invention is that the top 15 is firmly secured, at its edges to the inner walls of the pouch, so that in the use of the pouch the powder may only be able to escape through the perforations 22, placed there by the consumer.
When the puff 17 is ta ped lightly upon the top 15 the po rder'wil l escape upwardly through the pe orati-ons 22, and as the powder, 13 becomes less and less in quan tity by havin been used, the top 15 may, due to the flex bilityv of the pouch, be caused to descend so as to remain on top of the body of the powder at all times. The top 15 does not slide within the pouch, but when presseddownwardly against the powder the walls of the pouch collapse so as to permit the top 15 to be moved downwardly in suitable relation to the powder.
What 1 claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. A toilet powder package of the character described comprising a collapsible pouch having a sealed bottom and a top sealed to the walls of said pouch and adapted to be readily perforated by the consumer, the powder being contained betweensaid bottom and top and to be discharged through the perforations made in the top, and said top affording a seat for a powder puff and being adapted to move downwardly when the puff is pressed against the same and the pouch is thereby collapsed.
2. A toilct powder package of the character described comprising a collapsible pouch having a top sealed to the inner walls thereof and adapted to be perforated, a bottom formed of a stiff layer having an open center and to which the lower edges of the pouch are secured and a bottom seal secured over said opening, the powder being contained between said top and bottom and said top affording a receptacle for a powder puff.
3. A toilet powder package of the character described, comprising a collapsible. pouch having a sealed bottom, a perforated top sealed to the inner walls of said pouch and affording a seat for a powder puff, and an exterior box snugly receiving said pouch and having a removable cover, said pouch having an upwarydly extending portion adapted to be folded inwardly upon said pufi'.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York, and State of New York, this 30th day of August, A. D. 1917.
