GEORGE A. BLAKE, DECEASED, BY MARY D. BLAKE, ADMINISTRATOR, OF WATERTOWN, NEW YORK.
DEVICE FOR TYIN'G PACKAGES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 8, 1915).
Application filed December 18. 1918. Serial No. 267.415.
, To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARY D. BLAKE, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing t \Vatertown, in the county of Jefferson, State of New York, am the administrator of GEORGE A. BLAKE, who invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Tying Packages; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to fastening devices and more particularly to devices designed for fastening the confining cords of packages, and has for its object to provide a device which may be stamped from sheet metal and by means of which the confining cord of the package may be quickly and easily secured about the package, the structure of the device being also such that the cord may be easily and quickly released.
In the drawings Figure 1 illustrates a package of letters in top plan with the present invention in use thereon.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the position of the fastener with the cord engaged therewith prior to the final operation of engaging the shank beneath one stretch of the cord.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the fastening device.
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section through the fastening device showing the manner of attaching the cord thereto.
Referrin to the drawings, the present :t'astening c evice consists of an elongated shank 5 having a yoke 6 at one end, this yoke including divergent fingers 7 and 8 and a connecting bight portion 9 which is wider than the shank 5. The fingers 7 and 8 are offset to a plane spaced from the plane of the shank, this offset being accomplished by directing the bight portion of the yoke at an angle to both the shank and the fingers.
Formed through the bight portion 9 contrally thereof there is an opening 10 adapted to receive the confining cord 11 of a package therethrough, and carried by the edge of the bight portion 9 between the fingers 7 and 8 there is a finger 12 which is bent to extend in the direction of the shank 5.
At the opposite end of the shank 5 from 56 the yoke 6 there is a lip 13 which extends from one side of the shank over the opposite face of the latter from that beyond which the fingers 7 and S are offset, this lip being spaced from the shank for the'reception of a stretch of confining cord between it and the shank as illustrated in Fig. 1.
The side edge of the shank from which this lip extends is cut away for a considerable distance resulting in an elongated notch 14 extending from the lip and terminating short of the yoke at a shoulder 15.
In the us of the device, the confining cord 11 is passed around the package, which is indicated in the drawings at A, with the finger 12 directed away from the package. The cord is then crossed over itself and beneath the fingers 7 and 8, after which the cord is wound a number of times around the bight 9, the finger 12 acting as a stop to prevent the cord from slipping over the bight. Fig. 2 of the drawings illustrates the device with the above operations completed.
After the cord has been wound about the bight 9, the fastening device is shifted end for end, with the fingers 7 and 8 at opposite sides of the stretch of cord which passes from the opening 10, and the end of the shank which carries the lip 13 is then engaged beneath this stretch of cord and the latter is introduced between the lip 13 and the shank, the stretch of cord extending through the notch 14:, as illustrated. This disposal of the shank beneath the cord effectually prevents the return of the fastening device to its initial position through accident although it may be readily disengaged from the cord when the package is to b unfastcned.
lVhat is claimed is:-
1. In a package tie, a fastening device consisting of a body including a shank having spaced fingers at one end offset through the medium of a bight between the shank and fingers, said bight having an openin therein between the fingers, a finger carried by the bight between the first fingers and directed to extend over the opening at the opposite side of the bight from the direction of extension of the fingers and in position to engage the knotted end of a cord passed through the opening, and a lip carried by the shank at its end opposite to the fingers and extending over the shank at its side opposite to the direction of offset of the fingers.
2. In a package tie, a fastening device consisting of a body including a shank having spaced fingers at one end ofiset from the shank'through the Inedimn of a bight portion between the shank and fingers; saidbight having an opening therein, a fingen carried by the bight portion between the first mentioned fingers and extending over the opening at the side of the bight' portion opposite to the direction of extension of the rection of the offset of the fingers, said shank having a longitudinal notch in one edge extending froln the lipto a p'oint adjacent to the bight.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presenee of two Witnesses.
MARY D. BLAKE, As administmtm of Geo. A. B lake, deoeased.
