IMPROVEMENT lN REED'ORGANS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent Ho. 1 30,956, dated August 27, 1872.

SPEGIFIGATION.

Be it known that I, DANIEL TRIPP, of Owego, in the county of Tioga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reed Organs and Melodeons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, that will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon which form a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device embodying my invention and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same.

The object of my invention is to improve the construction of the parts of the organ and melodeon; and it consists in constructing the key and valve in one piece; in the reeds occupying an inclined position; in the arrangement of the lever for operating the upper bank of keys by the lower bank; and in the arrangement of the valves and reeds and mechanism for operating the same under the lower bank of keys.

A represents the ends of the instrument, to the top of which is hinged the frames 13 and B, which support the lower and upper banks of keys. 0 represents the lower bank of keys, which are pivoted to the frame B, and held in position by the spring a. Said key extends back and forms a valve for the reeds I) b. The upper keys, 0, are supported by the upper frame, B, in like manner, and extend back, forming valves for the reeds c c 0. D represents an angular lever, attached to the bar D, for the purpose of furnishing a means by which the upper bank of keys may be used at the same time as the lower bank, by operating the lower bank only; for, as the lever is turned down, its

lower end comes in contact with the extended top of the key 0, and its upper end operates the upper key, 0. E represents valves covering the reeds c, and said valves are hinged to rear side of the instrument, and operated by the extended ends of the upper bank of keys. F represents a block, attached to the lower side of the keys 0, for the purpose of operating the valves d d, which cover the reeds e, e, and f.

When the reeds e and e are not desired to be used, the air may be excluded by the stop or register g. A similar register may be placed over any of the reeds, if desired.

G represents an angular raised box, the upper part of which limits the downward motion of the keys 0. The front side of said box is provided with a swell, G, which is held in place by the spring 9.

It will be observed that the reeds e occupy an inclined position, and that the reeds e are placed on a much greater incline; the object of which is to allow the reeds to be removed, when required, by simply raising the valves, without removing any part or parts of the in strument, as heretofore. The same explanation applies to the other reeds used in the instrument, as any and all may be thus removed when broken, or when needing repair, being placed upon such an incline as to allow them to slide out when the valves are raised.

In my instrument I use the exhaust-bellows,

so that the air passes down, as indicated by the arrows.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination of the keys 0 and O, pivoted to the frame and extending back to form the valves, each key being constructed in one piece, substantially as and for the pur pose set forth.

2. The lever 1), attached to the rock-shaft or bar D, constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose herein described.

3. The reed-sets, (as e, e, and f,) placed at one or more angles under the reed-valves, to allow any reed to be removed by simply raising the reed-valve, all being arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

4:. The valves d d, placed on the outside, as shown, and combined with the reeds e and f, block F, and key 0, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
