To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LELAND A. PHILLirs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reeling- Machines; and I do hereby declare the fol lowing to be a full, clear, and exact descr1p tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My present invention relates to winding and reeling and has for its object to provide a simple, inexpensive and convenient machine for oflice use, through the medium of which fresh lengths of typewriter ribbon may be wound upon the small reels, or used in the inking mechanism of typewriting machines, the ribbon being supplied in bulk rolls and transferred to spools as required. A further object of the invention is to provide a machine of few parts that can be successfully operated by unskilled persons. To these and other ends the invention resides in certain improvements and combination of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.

eferring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates a frame or standard having a jaw 2 at its base carrying a thumb screw 3, by means of which the machine may be clamped to the edge of a shelf or table 4. At the top of the frame is a bearing 5 for a laterally extending shaft 6 having an enlarged thrust collar or shoulder 7 at one end, while at the other end and on the other side of the-frame the shaft carries a fixed pinion 8 that is riveted thereon in the present instance. On the same side of the frame and meshing with the pinion 8 is a gear 9 rotatable 011 a stud l0 and provided with a crank handle 11 constituting means for driving the shaft 6. The shaft 6 is threaded at 12, preferably with a left-hand thread, to receive a screw 13 terminating in a conical knurled head 14.
In the operation of the machine a type writer ribbon spool or reel indicated at 15 is placed on the screw 13, and the latter screwed into the shaft so that the reel held on the shank of the screw against the thrust shoulder 7 by the head i i. The latter is made conical to center reels having different sized central openings. When these openings are larger than the shank of the screw the conical head will not only center the reel but the engagement of the inner face of the reel with the shoulder 7 will maintain it in position.
The ribbon to be wound is furnished in a reel 16 having a-small wooden core 17. It is supported and caused to track properly with reference to the receiving wheel 15 by a fixed spindle 18 projecting laterally from the frame 1 in parallelism to the shaft 6. At its base is afixed face plate 19. The roll 16 is held in rotatable engagement with this face plate by a friction or spring nut 20 that is tightened against a washer 21 on the outer side of the roll. The spring nut 20 has perforated spring ends 22 that bite against the spindle 18 and lock the nut in position whenever released from the pressure of the fingers.
The remainder machine will be tudinal movement of the former 1S provided with a outer face and is cut understood. The roll 16 may be left thereon until used up, and a new roll can be easily and quickly applied by pulling off the nut 20 and sliding it on to the spindle. The face plate 19 holds the roll. accurately in the proper plane to track with the receiving reel, and as it does not rotate it does not require to be carefully machined.
/Vhen used in connection with a reel in which the axial aperture does not extend through the reel 15, the screw 13 which is approximately the size of said aperture is inserted in the opposite direction through the shaft and a pin 30 provided on said reel of the operation of the 9 permit it to properly enters the perforation 7 on the shoulder 7 While the lug or trip 31 employed on reels of this kind is accommodated in the cut away portion 7 It Will thus be seen that the machine is adapted to handle any of the usual spools or reels in use.
Having described my invention What I desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a ribbon reeling machine, the combination with a frame, a laterally extending shaft having a bearing therein and provided with a thrust shoulder, means comprising a conical headed member for concentrically securing to said shaft against said shoulder reels of various dimensions, driving means for said shaft, a spindle on said frame parallel with said shaft provided With a thrust shoulder in the plane of the shoulder of said shaft, and retaining means for holding a reel on said spindle.
2. In a ribbon reeling machine a rotatable ribbon reel holder comprising a rotatable shaft, having an axial threaded aperture, and a thrust shoulder thereon, in combination with a reel holding member threaded to enter the threaded aperture and having a conical head thereon, to center and hold the reel against the shoulder.
4:. In a ribbon reeling machine a rotatable ribbon reel holder comprising a rotatable shaft, having an aXial threaded aperture extending through it and a thrust shoulder thereon provided With an aperture eccentric to the axis of rotation in combination With a reel holding member comprising a threaded rod having a conical head.
