To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JACOB 'I. GARnrsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rodent-Exterminators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to rodent exterminators and it has for its object to provide a construction in which may be generated asphyxiating fumes that are forced under air pressure into the burrow, the entire structure being such as to give efficiency while being extremely simple in detail.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view of the apparatus in operation, portions thereof being broken away and the combustion chamber and fire pot being in section.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawing, the present apparatus comprises a combustion chamber, including an outer metal wall 5 and an inner fire-proof wall 6 of asbestos board, or other similar material, and between these outer and inner walls is a filling of asbestos plaster 9, or other suitable heat resisting substance. The walls are connected through the means of rivets 10. A cover is provided for the body 5, and includes an initially hollow metal plug 11, which is reduced at one end to fit with the cylindrical upper end of the body and to provide a shoulder that rests upon the upper end of the body, the lower end of the plug being covered by an asbestos plate 12 secured in place by the rivets 13. A filling 1 1 of asbestos plaster or similar material is provided within this hollow cover.
A bail 15 is provided for the body and is connected therewith, after the manner of connecting the bail to an ordinary bucket.
Within the body of the combustion chamber is fixed upon supports 16 a fire pot 17, having a central opening 18 in the bottom, above which is a plate 19 designed to support fuel, through "combustion of which there are given off asphyxiating fumes from a suitable chemical place thereon. 19 is spaced from the bottomv and from the side walls of the fire pot, so as to permit air to pass upwardly to and through the fuel without effecting a too rapid consumption of the fuel.
To supply air to the combustion chamber, an air supply pipe 17 is provided, having an upwardly turned end that enters the opening 18 in the bottom of the fire pot and this pipe 17' is directed laterally and through the wall of the combustion chamber where it is provided with a cut-off valve 18 from which leads a nipple 19 that is connected with an air reservoir 20. An air pump 21 is connected through a cut-0E valve 22 with the reservoir 20.
From the upper portion of the wall of the combustion chamber there leads a pipe 23 to a cut-off valve 2 1 from which extends a pipe 25 upon which is engaged at flexible tube 26. A nozzle is provided at the free end of the tube 26 and comprises a tubular stem 27 over the free end of which is engaged a conical casing 28, the tube 27 being provided with a plurality of perforations 29 within the inclosure of the casing or cap.
In action, a fire having been kindled upon the plate 19 the material to be volatilized is placed upon the fire and the cover is placed on the combustion chamber. The nozzle is then inserted in a burrow as illustrated in Fig. 1 and the valves 18 and 22 being opened, air is pumped into the reservoir 20 and passes thence to the fire pot where it supplies oxygen for combustion of the fuel and likewise carries the fumes into the space above the fire pot from which they pass through the pipes and valves to the nozzle, the fumes with their mixture of air, passing out of the nozzle and into the burrow. It will of course be understood that the burrow is closed at its upper end around the flexible tube so as to prevent the fumes passing out of the burrow and to insure them passing inwardly thereof.
By use of the reservoir 20, one person may operate the apparatus as sufficient air may be accumulated in the reservoir to effect several operations of the apparatus.
It will of course be understood that the conical cap of the nozzle permits passing it well into the burrow while avoiding plug ging of the perforations.
It will be understood that the asbestos sheet wall 6 serves to prevent access of the fumes to the more or less porous plaster filling and thence to the sheet metal Wall 5 with the consequent corrosion.
WVhat is claimed is A rodent exterminator comprising a combustion chamber including a metal outer Wall, a sheet asbestos inner Wall and a filling of insulating material therebetween, a fire pot Within the chamber, a reservoir exterior to the chamber and having a Valve controlled pi'pe leading to the fire pot, means for supplying air under pressure to the reservoir, a flexible pipe connected with the combustion chamber and a nozzle at the free end of the flexible pipe. 7
