Specification of Letters Patent,
Patented July 8, 1919.
Application ned March 1, isis. serial ne. entree.
and State et New Y rlr, lieve invented cer tuin new and useful improvements in Sprinkler Systems, of which the following is o. specilicznion, suoli es will enable those skilled in tlie zii-tto which it eppertziins to ineke end use the seine. f
This invention relates to what are lniown es lire sprinkler systems such e; nire usually employed in stores, factories and ptlier bnsiness places; and the object thereof is to pro vide on imprm'edl system of 'this class in which the witter dist which the Writer posses to the sprinklers are normally'cnipty und "voter admitted'tliereto only in cese olf lire, und when it is desired that the sprinklers should operette; and the' invention consists in the application to the mitin water supply pipe sind the Witter distribnting pipes of on apparatus whereby the liow of Wa-ter from the mein supply pipe to 4tlie writer distributing pipe or pipes is normally cut ollwbut operated in cese ol fire to admit tlie )vn-ter to the waiter dis tributing pipe or pipes und 'the sprinklers connected dieren/ith; urther object lbeing to provide on improved"electrical apparatus of the class specified which is simple in con@ struction und operation, :ind which will be :iutoinnticnlly opernted'to produce the desircd result in the ense of fire es hereinafter described.
The invention is lowing specification, of which the zic-coinpanying drawing 'forms n port, seid dreivingbeing e diagrammatic view el? un apparatus involving my invention.
In the drawing forming port of this specilicntion llieve shown et o u. moin Water supply pipe of o. Water sprinkling system oil elle class under considerzition7 and :it l) n Wutr distributing pipewliich is connected with the pipe o, und which is provided with sprinkling devices c of the. usual or any preferred construction, and it will be undern stood that any desirednuniber of Water distributing pipes l) may be employed, und also any desired number of the sprinkling de vices c.
The sprinkling devices c aire provided with fusible bends or cops" c2 which ere melted in the cose of fire, end when the heat ibuting pipes through.
fully disclosed in the ioll reaches n predetermined degree, and the waiter is disclierged through said sprinkling devices under the above conditions in the usuel manner, and the details vofthe conlstruction el these sprinkling devices form no psrt of my invention7 and are therefore not shown end described.,
in the operation of the apparatus Water is supposed to enter the mein supply pipe @and poss therethrough in tl'iedirection of the nrrovv 0J, and seid pipe is provided att e predetermined point with e valve device ol comprising` the usuel velve casing in which is nionnted e velve provided with n stem endgtlie valve device is ol the type or provided with en inyverdly and outwardly movable closure device, and when the stein d is rotated in one direction seid valve and stein both inove in tile direction of the arroiv y, and tlie liceid Z3 with 'Wliicl'l the stem d? is provided will inove outwardly into the position indicated in dotted lines.
ln the accompanying drawing .I have shown n bnttery e preferably of the gravity cell type and provided with circuit Wires f and g. The circuit'ivire g extends parallel ivi'tli tlie distributing pipe o sind is divided :it intervals, wlierc jllie sprinkling devices nre located, and connected therewith arelezrd Wire loops g2 which are preferably arranged so as to inclose the sprinkling devices but Which may be errenged in any desired manner.
I also provide n magnet it with which the circuit Wire f is connected and another Wire e' is also connected with the magnet fr and with tne Wire g, or with one of the lead wire loops g2.
The magnet is provided with an armeture y' -which is pivotedznt jz and another wire is is connectedvivitii n binding post or Contact device la? in connection with which the nrnieture j operetes, and another Wire m is connected with the armature y', and e spring (i3 is connected with the armature and normally holds seid armature in the position slooivn in dotted lines.
The Wire 7c constitutes one of the mein circuit Wires of the system or apparatus and nnotlicr mein circuit Wire u is elsoeinployed, and tliesc moin circuit Wires may be supplied froin any suitable source of electric supplie The mein circuit Wire n connects with ya, switch device n located adjacent to the head el of the valve stem d and an electric motor o is also employed? in the construction shown, and this motor 1s provided with a,
Aably employ an electric gong or other signal device s which is connected with the wire fm, by a wire t and with the wire 'n by a Wire u in which is placed a switch device u2.
The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the following statement.
Under 'normal conditions the main water supply pipe a, or the part o2 thereof will be filled with water up to the valve device d, but the part a3 of said pipe and the distributing. pipe or pipes b will be empty.' If, under these conditions, a fire should originate in a place provided with my im roved apparatus and the temperature shou d rise to a point or degree at which the heads of the sprinkling devices c will be fused or melted, the wire loop members g2 would also be fused or melted at the same time, and the.
circuit through the magnet h would be .broken and the other circuit completed through the armature and the wires c and m, the signal device s and the motor 0, and the shaft o2 of said motor would be operated. This operation of` the shaft o2 would rotate the supplemental shaft o4 and the valve in the valve device al would be turned by the forked head o5 of the shaft 0*, the arms of which pass loosely through the head da of l the valve stem d2, and said valve stem and its head Z3 would be moved outwardly into the position shown in dotted lines and the water would rush into the pipe a, or the part a thereof and into the distributing pipe or pipes b and into and through the sprinkling devices c in the usual manner.
`When the valve in the valve device d and its stem d is operated, in the manner above described, and the head cl3 of said valve stem moves into the dotted line position, it will operate the switch n2 and the circuit throu Yh the wires r and a and through the signal c evice s and the motor o will be broken,- but the How of water will continue until the connecfion between the shafts o2 and o4 is broken and the valve or valve, device (l returned to its normal position, or the flow -of water through the part a2 of the (pipe a is-cut off which maybe done by han at any desired point. With my apparatus it will be seen that there will be no water in the distributing ,t pipe or pipes b nor the sprinkling devices c,
and this as is evident will prevent the freez ing and bursting of such pipes in extremely cold weather and thus prevent great loss and damage as will be readily understood aud,
as bgrestated, water is only admitted to Jthe"distributing pipe or pipes b and the sprinkling devices c when the valve d is opened.
i It also sometimes happens when sprin- Y kling apparatus of the class herein considered .is employed that the heads or caps'c2 of the sprinkling devices are accidentai'ly` tions thereof may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrifie-Vl -v in its advantages.
