@Thisinveiition relates to improvement -i brakefoperating means and has' for its object the construction of an improved-device of this character to be used onflat cars;
Another-objectof our invention is to provided device which is attachedtto thecorner of the ear in such a inanner that complies with the'requir'ements of the Interstate Com merce Commission. that it 'issafe' inoperation, that it is out of the way'in case afiat car-is use'd in construction worker incase several flat-cars are used together withlong' pieces'of material running'from one carto the'oth'er. r With" these and other obj ects inview our invention consists in the novel construction.
combination and arrangement of arts here in illustrated and more specifically pointed out, in ,the appended claims,
Reference jbeing hadtp the accompanying drawing forming apart'of this specification,
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of our improved device showing the same attached to" a fragmentary portion of the car body.
Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation at right angles, to Fig. 1 and looking at the end'of a car to which the device is attached.

able the lnehiber to be bolted toitheicari body. The side wall his provided witha continuation 7forming ani' arm; at 'righ-t angles to 5 whereby. the deviceisfastened to the end surface ofthecar by a bolt, at right angles to thatof arm Formed be tween the walls 3 and tare cross members 8. 9 and 10. having holes inwhich is.
ally-mounted the brake staff 11.
This staff is provided with a reduced porpivot.-
this ratchet hav-in [teeth on-the underside and is spaced a su, cient distance abovethe top surface of member, 10 to enablea pawl to operate: Bracketfi is provided with :the
the counter weight 20, which also serves as a foot lever, is slightly above the floor,
. thereby enabling the operator who is standmg on the floor, by a spring-like pressure on the weight 20, to easily release the brake.
A chain or other flexible cable- 21 is attachedto' the lower end of the brake stafl and passes therefrom to the brake operating mechanism.
attached the operating handle, denoted in generalby 25. This handle consists of the ratchet member 26 having teeth 27 and a squared central opening 28 by which it is held in fixed relation to a similarly shaped portion on the upper end of the brake staff.
A nut 30 is in engagement with the up er endof the brake stafif whereby the rate et member is held in place. I
Prvotally mounted on thls ratchet ment- To the upper end of the brake v staff is ber is the revoluble sleeve 31 ha-vingan extension 32 wherein is pivotally mounted the handle 33, this handle being; provided with an outwardly extending finger 34, which engagesa corresponding shoulder in member 3'2, thereby preventing the handle from being raised above a horizontal position, but at the same time allowing'the same to fall 'by gravity to a vertical position, the handle being pivotally mounted on the bolt 35.
Slidably mounted in a suit-able opening in a the sleeve 31 is a pawl 36, this pawl being controlled by a spring 37.
In. use the device is attached to the corner of a fiat car as shown in the drawings. When it is desired to apply the brake the handle 33' is raised as far as permitted by the finger 34 and then either by a ratchet action 0 by complete revolution the stall 11 is turned to wind the chain 21 thereon. During this operation the pawl 17 engages the teeth of the ratchet wheel 12 thereby holding the chain in a state of tension. As soon as. the operator has ceased usmg the will be understood that minor changes may be made in detail and design without departing from the scope of the claims. \Vhat we clalm as new and wish to cover by Letters Patent is l. A brake operating device comprising in in said member, a ratchet carried by said staff, lugs removably attached to said member, a pawl pivotally mounted in said lugs and an operating handle secured to said brake-stafi'.
2. A brake operating device for flat cars comprising in combination a box-like member secured to the corner of theflat car, a brake-staff pivotally mounted in said memher, a. ratchet secured to said staif, intermediate the ends thereof, a pawl, lugs removably attached to said box-like member, said pawl pivotally mounted between said lugs, a ratchet mounted on the upper end of said staff, a sleeve surrounding said ratchet, a pawl in said sleeve and a folding handle pivotally attached tosa-itl sleeve.
A. brake of the character described comprising a member having arms shaped to be attached to the corner of a car, abrake staff rota-tablymounted in said member, a ratchet secured to said staif, lugs removably secured to one of said arms, a pawl pivotally supported by said lugsand positioned to engage said ratchet, a weight pivotally supported by said lugs and positioned to engage said pawl, and means whereby the brake staff may be rotated.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures.
