a resident of Waukogan, county of Lake State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tiltilig Front Axles for Vehicles, of which the following isa specification. w
This invention relates to front axles for vehicles and particularly for that class of vehicles known tractors designed for use on farmsto draw various kinds of farming Inachines such as plows harrows, etc.
These tractors necessarily are obliged to pass over" very rough ground and the object ofthe present invention isto provide a frontaxlefraine which will accommodate itself totheseuneven surfaces; H
The invention consists in mounting the stiib axles between two separated plates secured together and pivoted to the main frame'ofthe tractor by a horizontally dis- )osed*pivot. j
The invention further consists in the means wherebysaid stub axles may be simultaneously moved about their pivots to guide the vehicle.
The invention further consists in certain novel features and arrangement of parts which will be more fully understood by rat erence tothe description of the drawings and to the claims to behereinafter given.

To the upper end of the shaft 43 is secured a segment 45 of a worm gear, the teeth of which "mesh with the worm 46 revolubly mounted in a casing 47 secured to a sill 10 and the transom 11. The casing 47 is provided with a cover 48 inclosing the worm 46 and the segment 45. The worm 46 is provided with a shaft 49 extending through the casing 47 and having secured to its outer end the revoluble operating rod 50.
By rotating this rod 50 motion is imparted to the segment 45 by means of the worm 46 and the lever 42 is thereby moved about the axis of-the shaft 43.
. This movement, through the link or rod 38, causes the arms 33 and the stub axles to bemoved about the axes of their pivots 29*. During this movement of the axles 30 about the pivots 29*, the trucks 32 move along the curved track 23 extending laterally from the upper and lower plates 20 and 24. These tracks are separated from each other slightly in excess of the diameter of the trucks 32 which normally bear upon the lower track as shown in Fig. 2.
The two plates 20 and 24 with their various connections form a frame for the stub axles 30 which are pivoted to said frame in such a manner that they may be easily moved about their pivots 29 to guide the truck or tractor by simply rotating the operating rod.
Connected to the lower plate 24 at 51 are brace rods 52, the opposite end of each of which is threaded and extends through an opening in one end of the rocker member 16 and has mounted thereon the adjusting nuts 53 and .54 on opposite sides of said rocker member.
.These brace rods 52 give a greater rigidity to the front axle frame and permit the said frame and the rocker member 16 to tilt respectively about the pivot pins 21 and 17 when the truck or tractor is passing over uneven surfaces.
p This makes a very convenient form of front axle for use in tractors and similar vehicles which in their work are obliged to travel over rough and broken ground.
It is believed that the operation and many advantages of this invention will be fully understood bythe foregoing description.

said phrtes; rollers on the inner ends of said axles adapted to travel between said lateral extensions and limited in their movement in opposite directions by certain of said separators; an arm on each hub; a connector between said arms; and means for moving said stub axles about their pivots.
2. The combination of a pivoted frame adapted to be moved in a vertical plane about its pivot and consisting in part of two parallel separated plates having laterally extending curved extensions integral therewith; stub axles having hubs interposed between and pivoted to the opposite ends of said plates and having extensions provided with rollers adapted to travel between said curved extensions; means preventing the displacement of said rollers from said extensions; and means for simultaneously moving said axles about their pivots.
3. The combination of a frame consisting in part of two parallel separated plates; stub axles having hubs interposed between said plates and pivoted thereto; means for moving said axles about their pivots; ears on the upper plate; a bracket curved to and extending downwardly from the main frame of the vehicle; a pivoted connection between said ears and bracket; a depending bifurcated bracket on the main frame; a rocker plate pivotally mounted in said bifurcated bracket; and braces between said rocker plate and said axle frame.
4. The combination of a frame consisting in part of two parallel separated plates,v stub axles having hubs interposed between said plates and pivoted thereto; means for moving said axles about their pivots; upwardly extending ears on the upper plate; a bracket secured to the main frame of the vehicle the lower end of which is positioned between said ears; a pivoted connection between said ears and bracket; a cross member secured to the main frame; ears depending therefrom; a pivoted rocker plate mounted between said depending ears with its pivot alined with said pivotal connection; and brace rods secured at one end to the outer ends of said rocker plate and with their opposite ends diverging and secured to said axle frame.
5. The combination of a frame consisting in part of two parallel separated plates each having formed thereon two sets of oppositely disposed curved lateral extensions; non-revoluble stub axles having hubs interposed between said plates and pivoted thereto, said hubs having extensions provided with rollers adapted to travel between said curved lateral extensions; means for moving said axles about their pivots: means for limiting the movement of said extensions about their pivot; ears on the upper plate extending upmain frame of the vehicle with its lower end between said upwardly extending ears; a pivoted connection between said ears and bracket; across member secured to said main frame; ears depending therefrom; a rocker 5 plate mounted between said ears with its ivot alined with said pivotal connection; race rods secured at one end to said axle frame and having their opposite ends threaded and extending th vough said rocker plate; and adjusting nuts on said threaded it) ends on opposite sides of said rocker plate.
