ROAD-WORKING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 1, 1919.
Application filed August 30, 1917. Serial No. 189,019.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALoNzo G,Do \nvricii,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Concordia, in the county oi Cloud State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Road} \Vorking Ma: chines, of which the following is a full and exact specification. j a a The present invention relates to road-I working machinery, and anns to provide an improved arrangement and construction 7 of apparatus for grading the surface of roadbeds. the invention is to devisea inachine of this character having a road grading ineinber arranged and supported in a 11()V6l111ttl11161' for adapting the saineto be presented in the proper relation to the road surface and also readily and convenien tly adjusted with relation to said surface. To this end the invention provides a road grading member which is pivotally supported intermediate its ends, together with suitable adjusting; means for varying the positionotl? the grading; member angularly with reference to its supporting connection as well as to the surface of the roadbed. a a
It is also sought to devise a construction wherein provision will be made for holding the grading nien'iber yieldingly in engage; ment with the suriace being gradech With these generalobjects in view, as
well as minor objects aswillappear in the course ofthedetailed description tl invention will now be described withfrel erence to the accompanying drawings illust ating one form of construction whiclrhas been found to be praetical and eiiicient, after which those features and combinations deemed to be novel will bcscverally set forth and defined in the appendedclaiins.
In the dr-awlngs p Figure 1 is a side elevation of a road working machine constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Fig. 2 is aplan view of thesanie; Fig. 8 it rear elevation the machine; Figs. 4; and 5are detail sectional views taken on the lineslv lv and re spectively,ofF1g.2; a a q is a detail sectional v e taken on Referring to the drawings in detail, these Accordingly, one of theobjects of illustrate the main machine frame as comprising the longitudinal forwardly converging neinbers 2, the rear ends of which are connected to the arched yoked provided with the supporting wheels 6; intermediate their ends these members 2 are joined by the transverse member 8 which supports the drivers seat 10, and the front ends of saitlineinbers 2 areconnectcd bv a bracket plate 12 which is formed with a bearingld (see Figs. 4 and 5) for receiving the vertical pivot stem 16 projecting up from the yoke 18 of the caster wheel 20. p The road working member of: the ma: chine comprises a grading or scraping incinberor blade 22 which is carried by the lower edge oi? a beam 2 iii diagonal relation, to the roadbed 26!; The grading ineniberis pivotally supported intermediate its ends, and
. preferably ata point nearer to the left end gageinent with the surface of the road. At
this intermediate portion of the grading member a bracket plate 28 is secured to the rear face oil the beam 2i by means bolts on the like 50. Apair of lug s are formed onthe lower end of said bracket plate 28 for carrying -bolt to which is loosely pivoted the depending portions ofa hanger arm 36. The forward end of the hanger arm 36 is received within a recess 3S Q on the bracket plate 12 to which the arinlis pivoted by means of a bolt; LO carrying spacing waslv ers 452 on the opposite sides of said. arm 36. Atthe bend in the hangen arm 36 an angle plate 44 issecureclto the arm, with which platet isslidingly engaged a rod d6 conne cted at its upper end to an operating lev-er at}. This leve 'is pivotally mounted a bracket and provided with at latch forfengagenient with a notch d isector forined ontheibraeket 50. fittjlClilil'flCliGii carried bylthe transverse members in position at operation of the lever 4L8 sea the p 4E6 iopa CO ll spring 56 in eng ernent at its oppositeejndswith theieven S and the ting ,qie plate '44 so that the forward operation of the lever will operate to depress the grading; member in yielding; engagement with the surface'ofthe road, while the redrivers seat 10. Surroundin the rec ice to i grading angle at which the blade tudinally tippin'gqthe grading member verse-operation of said lever will act to positively and bodily elevate the grading member either partially or completely out of contact with the road surface. F or steadying the movements of the grading member from the rear, a staymember 58 is provided which is loosely pivoted to a lug 60 intermediate the ends of the bracket 28, the rear end of said stay member being connected pivotally to the yoke 4 adjacent to one of the wheels 6. 7
Means is provided for tilting the grading member transversely about its bolt connection 34 with the hanger arm 36, this being for the purpose of varying the scraping or 22 is presented to the road surface. This tilting means comprises a link 62 connected at one end to an ear 64 formed on the upper end of the bracket plate 28, and at its other end to a lever 66 which is pivotally mounted on a bracket 68 secured to the hanger arm 36 p in advance of the plate 44. The lever 66 is provided with a latch 70 cooperating with a notched sector 72 formed on said bracket 68 forholding the lever 66 in various peei tions.
Means is alsoprovided for-longitudinally tilting the grading member for varying the angle at which it extends diagonally with referenceto the roadbed. This means comprises anangular arm 74 pivoted at one end to a bracket 76 secured to the rear face of the beam 24 near its lower edge and in the vicinity of its right end, the other end of said arm 74 being pivotally connected to one end of a rocking arm 78 pivoted at 80 to the right frame member 2; the other end of said rocking arm 78 is connected by a link 82 to a lever 84 mounted on a bracket 86 carried by the left frame member 2, the said lever 84 being provided with a latch 88 cooperating with a notched sector 90 formed on'the bracket 86 for holding said lever in set position. I
'There is also provided means for long:-
5 raising its .left end thereby tipping the grading member about its right end as a fulerum. This tipping means comprises a lever 92 fulcrumed in a sleeve 94 secured to the left frame member' '2. The outer end of this lever 92 has a straight portion 96 adaptedfor sliding engagement with an elongated loop 98 secured to the beam 24 adjacent its left end portion, this sliding engagement being, for the purpose of accommodating the other adjustments of the grading member. The inner end of the lever 92 is formed with a foot-engaging portion 100 extending inposition for convenientioperation by the foot of the driver when occupying the seat 10. 1 V v V The draft connections provided for use withthe machine are arranged to mclu de draft equalizer mechanism of the general type illustrated in Letters Patent No. 1154104 issued to me on September 21, 1015. In assembling these draft connections in the present construction, the central cross-bar 102 of the equalizer mechanism is mounted for pivotal movement about the stem 16 of the caster Wheel 20, while the outer members 104 of said equalizer mechanism are provided with the rigid stay members or draft links 106 pivotally connected by bolts 108 or the like to the side frame members 2. A tongue or pole 110 is connected by means of a pivot bolt 112 to a casting 114 which is likewise pivoted about the axis of the stem 16 by being journaled on the hearing 14 of said stem 16, as illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5. The pole may be locked in straightahead position, whenever desired, by means of a removable pm 116 extending through registering openings in the casting 114 and the bracket plate 12.
It is found that a machine constructed in accordance with the foregoing operates very efiiciently and satisfactorily to perform the required functions of a road grading or scraping apparatus, the arrangement and construction being such as to greatly facilitate the necessary adjustments of the scraping or grading member and maintain the same in the desired positions of adjustment. lVhen desired the grading member may be set in the position shown in Fig. 3 with said member operating to grade uniformly throughout its length; or if it should be found advisable to raise the left end of the grading member up slightly above the road surface (as when it is desired to allow the loose material to pass under the grading member at some intermediate portion so as to fill depressions in the roadbed) this may be readily and quickly done by the operation of the foot lever 92, thereby lifting the left end portion of the grading member while leaving its right end portion in work ing engagement with the roadbed. The of fective working angle of the grading member with reference to the road surface is conveniently altered by operation of the lever 66, thereby tilting the grading member transversely in an obvious manner. This lever and its connections are carried by the pivoted hanger arm 36 and in the vicinity of the middle portion of thegrading member, and are thus arranged and adapted to operate in the most effective manner for accomplishing their proper function while maintaining any desired adjustment of the grading member constant during any of the operations of the other adjusting means. The particular angle of the diagonal relation of the grading member to the roadbed is adapted to be quickly and conveniently Varied by the operation of the lever 84 to pull the right end portion of the grading member backward or forward the required extent, thus swinging the grading member angular-1y about its pivotal supporting connection 34:, during which movement the loop 98 simply slides freely over the straight portion 96 of the lever 92 so that the longitudinally vertically tilted relation of the grading member remains unchanged during the operation of said lever 84. When the lever 48 is depressed to maintain the grading member in more or less effective ongagement with the roadbed, the spring element 56 introduces a yielding action, so that the grading member may be allowed to yield to a certain extent upon encountering any unusual obstructions in the roadbed. This spring 56 is inactive whenever the lever L8 is thrown to the rear for the purpose of raising the grading member, so that the action in the raising of the grading member by the lever is positive, and by a sufficient throw of the lever the grading member may be bodily lifted on its pivotal supporting means completely out of contact with the surface of the road. By locating the pivotal bolt 3 L slightly to the left of the middle of the grading member, however, the grading member tends to assume the correct normal position, that is, to maintain its right end at the lower level, as is usual in road grading. in carrying out the various adjustments it will be understood that all the connections with the grading member are sufficiently loose to acconunodate all necessary relative movement in effecting said adjustments (see Figs. 6 and 7 The manner of applying the draft equalizer mechanism to the front end of the machine with the main axis of said mechanism coinciding with the vertical axis of the caster wheel affords an efficient draft arrangement and a novel and simple combination of the elements entering into said caster wheel and draft conections.
It will thus be apparent that a simple, efficient and comparatively inexpensive arrangement and construction have been provided for carrying out the desired objects of the invention, and while the preferred form of construction the right is reserved to such formal changes or modifications as may fairly fall within the scope of the appended cl aims.
hat I claim is:
