To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUsTAvn BAnrrn, a citizen of the French Republic, and residing in Paris, France, 75 Avenue des Champs Elyses, mechanical manufacturer, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Thumb-Nut Spanners,.of which the following is a complete specification.
This invention has for its object a thumb nut spanner enabling to lock the spanner in any adjusted position, and essentially characterized by the fact that the housing corresponding to the thumb nut is notably enlarged in order to accommodate the nose of a pawl pivoted on the handle, a helical spring surrounding the shank of the movable jaw, and bearing upon the thumb nut and upon a projection provided on each leg of the stationary jaw. p
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates, by way of example, a constructional form of the invention:

The spanner consists, as shown, of the stationary jaw 1 with two legs, made integral with the handle, and of the movable jaw 2 integral with a shank 3 sliding into the stationary jaw and terminating in a threaded portion 4, upon which the thumb nut 5' is engaged. Each leg 1 of the stationary jaw is provided internally with a projection 6, upon which presses a helical spring 7 which latter, on the other hand, presses upon the thumb nut 5. One of the legs of the stationary jaw l is bored with an aperture 8, into which can enter the curved end 9 of a pawl 10 pivoted, at 1.1, into a suitable housing provided in the handle; a spring-blade 12 is interposed between the underside of the pawl 10 and the bottom of the housing. i
The operation is as follows The spanner is used in the ordinary inanner by rotating the thumb-nut 5, until the movable jaw 2- becomes spaced apart from the stationary jaw 1 by the distance required for embracing the two corresponding opposite sides of the nut. At the instant when it is desired to screw or unscrew the nut, the pawl 10 is depressedinto its housing, the end 9 thereof entering in the aperture 8; thereby is eli'ected the locking of the spanner, which latter, in such circumstances, fulfils the function of an ordinary spanner. When it is desired to disengage the spanner for embracing the two next opposite sides of the nut, it is necessary, as shown, with an ordinary spanner, to readjust, each time, the spacing apart of the two jawsgin some cases, when the nut is inconveniently positioned, it is very difficult to find the correct spacing apart; with the improved spanner, the said spacing is immediately "found, it, of course, the thumb-nut be sutliciently unscrewed, owing to the tension of the helical spring 7, and by previously lifting the pawl 10. When the spacing apart is found, it is only necessary to unscrew the thumb-nut, and, whenever it is desired to rotate the nut, the pawl 10 is depressed into its housing. The spring-bladelQ, owing to its elasticity, disengages automatically the pawl 10 when it is no longer depressed by hand.
lVhat I claim is 1. An improved thumb-nut spanner, comprising a stationary jaw having a hollow and apertured handle, a movable jaw having a threaded shank slidable in the stationary jaw and handle, a nut on the shank of the movable jaw, a pawl pivoted on the handle and provided with a nose projecting into the opening of the handle, and a helical spring surii'ound'ng the shank of the movable jaw and bearing upon the thumb-nut and upon projections on the stationary jaw, whereby the locking of the spanner may be effected, and the jaws automatically spaced apart for changing the two embraced opposite sides of the spanner, without disengaging said spanner.
