To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD Rochester, in the county of Monroe, State of New York, have invented a new and useful Controlling Mechanism for Talking- Machines, which invention is fully set forth in the following specification and shown in the accompanying drawings.
The present invention relates to controlling mechanisms for talking machines and more particularly to the type provided with means for automatically effecting the stopping of the machine when the stylus has reached the end of the record, an object of this invention being to provide an electrical stop which does not employ the tone arm as part of the circuit.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved controlling means having a circuit closer which is shiftable to any desired position of the face of the record for the purpose of effecting the automatic stopping of the machine at the desired point.
To these and other ends the invention consists in certain parts and combinations of parts all of which will be hereinafter described, the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.

In the embodiment of the invention herein illustrated 1 indicates a table above which a record support 2 is mounted and on the under side of which a motor 3 of any suitable construction is arranged for turning the record support. The stop for the motor comprises a brake preferably in the form of an eccentric 8 having a yielding portion 9 and carried by a to move into and out of cooperative relation with the rotary record support 2. This brake preferably has a normal tendency to move to braking position and this tendency may be produced by a spring 11 anchored at one end 12 to a bracket 13 and at the other end at 14 to an arm 15 which is secured to the shaft 10 of the brake. To hold the brake out of braking position a latch 16 may be employed pivoted at 17 and controlled by an electromagnet 18 whose armature 19 is connected to an arm of the latch 16, the latch being moved into latching engagement with the arm 29 of the brake under the action of a spring 20 that is mounted on the bracket 13 and cooperates with such latch.
The electro-magnet 18 may be energized by a battery 21 and may be controlled by a plunger switch 22 arranged on the underside of the table 1 and having an operating plunger 23 extending through the table to the top thereof, the depression of the plunger causing the closing of the circuit 24 which leads to the electro-magnet. It is desirable to break the circuit 24 after the electro-magnet has been energized to operate the brake, and to this end the arm 15 of the brake on the brake shaft 10 is connected to the circuit 24: and cooperates with a contact 25 when the brake is out of braking position but moves out of engagement with the contact 25 when the brake moves into braking position, thus breaking the circuit 24:- The brake or stop 8 may be moved out of engagement with the record support 2 preferably by a spring pressed plunger 26 operating through cooperating with a bell crank lever 27 which is pivoted at 28 to the under side of the table. This bell crank lever bears against the arm 15 on the brake shaft 10 so that, with the depression of the plunger 26, the bell crank lever will shift the arm 15 until the latch 16 cooperates with the arm 29 on the shaft 10 of the brake or stop, thus at the same time causing the closing of the break in the circuit produced by the arm 15 of the brake shaft.
There may also be provided means for automatically stopping the machine when the end of the record is reached. This means preferably embodies an arm 30 carrying two contacts 31 and 32 at its outer end and mounted to swing on a pivot 33 about an axis perpendicular to the plane of the record so that the arm may move over the record, said arm being also mounted to swing about an axis 3% parallel with the plane of the record so that the arm may move toward and from the record for the purpose of permitting the finder point 35 formed 011 one of the contacts 32 to be engaged with the record. A spring washer 36 with a laterally extending spring arm 37 serves thedual tunction of producing friction to restrain the movement of the arm (bout the pivot 33 and to hold the arm away from the record 4:.
The finder 35 is adapted to enter the groove of the record when the arm is moved toward the record so that the arm may be positioned over the record at any point where it is desired that the machine shall stop. The most desirable stopping point will be the end of the groove and this point is obtained by pressing the arm 30 toward the record and permitting the record to rotate. This causes the finder point 35 to travel in the groove until the end of the latter is reached. At this time, the arm 30 is freed and will lie above the record at a point where the machine is to be stopped. During the operation of the machine the stylus will travel in the groove in the usual manner until it engages the contact 31. This efiects the closing of the circuit 24 through Copies of this patent may be obtained for the shunt circuit 24: and the energizing of the magnet 19 thus releasing the brake 8 and permitting the latter to turn into engagement with the rotary record support 2.
The starting of the machine is efliected by depressing the plunger 26 thus freeing the record support 2 to the motor 3. It is apparent also that the machine may be stopped at any point by depressing the plunger 23 which will also effect the closing of the circuit 24 and operation of the brake 8 into cooperation with the rotary record support 2.
It is apparent that an automatic electrical stop has been provided for stopping the machineat the end of a record groove without utilizing the tone arm as part of the circuit of the electrical circuit.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. Ina talking machine, the combination \vitha record support, and a reproducer, and an electrically operated means for controlling the stopping of the record support embodying a make and break device having its two contacts adjustable simultaneously relatively to the reproducer in the path of the reproducer.
2. In combim tion with a talking machine having a stop device, an automatic controller for such stop device 'con'iprising an arm adjustable to different positions over the record relatively to the reproducer, and two contacts carried by the arm in the path of the reproducer.
