WITNESSES. 1 S lNI ENTO VLADIMIR T. DIMITROFF, OF NORTH SCITUATE, RHODE ISLAIN'D.
DENTAL INSTRUMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 17, 1919.
Application filed December 4, 1914. Serial N 0. 875,512.
To all "(P/2011b it may concern Be it known that I, VLADIMIR T. DIM!- rnorr, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Scituate, in the county .of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented new and useful Improvements in DentalInstruments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates particularly to the class of dental instrun'ients and has special reference to devices for holding what is termed dental floss.
' An object of my invention is to provide an instrument of the foregoing type Which will facilitate the cleaning of the teeth with the floss or 00rd by the arrangements hereinafter set forth.
Another object of my invention is to provide a dental cord holder. The body portion thereof receives a'spool carrying the cord, said cord being fed between the ends of a substantially U-shaped member, consequently facilitating the cleaning of the teeth therewith.
A further object of my invention is to provide an instrument of the above nature wherein the U-shapcd member may be adjusted to different angles according to the desire of the operator thus allowing the same to be adjusted when cleaning different teeth.
A further object of my invention is to provide a dental cleaning instrument which consists of but a few simple parts whereby it may be manufactured and placed upon the market at a minimum cost.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention relates to such details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying! drawing wherein like characters denote h s or corrrspomliug parts throughout the SCA- cral views and in which:
Figure 1, is a side elevation of my invention.
Fig. 2, is a a. similar View showing the parts in section.
Fig. 3, is a plan view of the device showing the U-shaped member in adjusted posi tion in dotted lines.
Fig. 4, is a bottom View.
In the accompanying drawings wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, the numeral 10 designates the body or handle portion which is preferably constructed of wood or the like material but it is to be appreciated that I do not limit myself to any specific form.
A centrally located hollow portion or cavity 11 is provided Within the handle and communicates with the bearing or socket 11, and connects at its rear extremity with an opening or bearing 12, the latter extending to the rear of the handle. The hollow portion further connects with a slot 13, the latter serving the purpose that will be hereinafter set forth.
I have provided, for reception in the hollow portion 11, a spool or bobbin upon which. the cord 15 is wound, this spool compris ing a hemispherical element 16, a pivot element 16, a cylindrical shank l7, and a head 18 which its snugly against an extension 19 on the handle.
From theeforegoing description it will be readily appreciated that the spool may be removed from the hollow portion when it is desired so that a new quantity of cord maybe disposed thereon or the same repaired in any manner. An extension 20 is formed upon the forward end of the handle 10, this extension pivot-ally supporting through the medium of a pin 21 a circular disk 2'2. This disk has formed about the periphery thereof a plurality of spaced apart recesses 23, these recesses being engaged by certain mechanisin whereby the disk may be held at different positions in relation to the handle.
A substantially U-shaped member, such as is shown at 2st is provided, one end thereof being fast upon the disk 22 whereby when the disk is adjusted to dilferent positions the U-shaped member will also he adjliisted rela tive to the handle. 1
The cord held upon the spool 14-, is fed outward through a passage 25 in the handle and along a longitudinally extending recess or groove 26 within the same and brought into engagement with a recess 27 in one end of the U-shapcd member, where it there will be made fast in any desired manner. However in the drawing I have shown a pin 28 for this purpose. It will now be recognized that the cord spans the U-shapcd member thus providing a suitable way :50; facilitating the cleaning of the teeth.
lhe disk 22 may be held in rigid relation with the handle by means of a substantially T-shaped member or bolt 29 Whichis seated Within the recess or cavity 31 and a slot 30 in the handle. One end of the'bolt 29 engages with any selected one of the recesses in the disk, another portion extending up- Ward and forming a handle whereby the bolt may be manipulated, and the other slidable in the cavity 31. The cavity 31 has a coil spring 32 disposed therein which tends to normally hold the T-shaped member or bolt 29 in engagement with the disk 22, as is obvious. i
. By the provision of the slot 13, the shank -12 isfrictionally engaged by the handle ele ments on opposite sides of the slot, said handle elements exerting a suflicient pres- '-'sure 01' tension on the shank to prevent accidental rotation of the latter, thereby maintaining the tension of the span of thread across the U-shaped member.
' From the foregoing it is thought that the operation of my invention Will be readily recognized and that a further detail description thereof would be superfluous.
Such changes as are permissible by the sub-joined claim may be recited Without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention member being provided with means for attaching a portion of the thread, and means for allowing said U-shaped member to be moved into difierent positions with relation to said body and for holding said U-shaped memberin its different positions.
VLADIMIR T. DIMITROFF.
