STEAM-GENERATING APPARATUS.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, PERRY H. GENTZEL, a citizen of the United States, residing in Newton, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Steam-Generating Apparatus, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to a steam generating apparatus employing as the heating agent liquid fuels, such as kerosene or other oils. The invention has for its object to provide apparatus of the character described with novel means for controlling the supply of liquid fuel and steam to the fire-box of the apparatus, whereby a maximum heating effect may be obtained with a minimum heating surface and with a minimum consumption of the liquid fuel for a maximum length of time.
To this end, the controlling means comprises a casing having a fluid inlet connected with the steam boiler, a piston located insaid casing and operatively connected with a valve stem located in said casing and at-.

The steam generating apparatus is adapted for general use but it is especially valuable as a heating unit for motor vehicles and the like employing steam as the motive power.
.The particular features of this invention will be pointed out in the claims at the end of this-specification.

Referring to the drawing,-a represents a steam boiler of ordinary construction and preferably of the fire tube type, and b the fire box thereof, which is supplied with liquid fuel, such as kerosene, by a supply pipe 0, and with steam by a supply pipe d. passing through the nozzle creates a suction in the oil supply pipe and ejects the oil in a finely divided state from the nozzle into' the fire box of the boiler. In the present instance the nozzle 6 is shown as located outside of the fire boxin proximity thereto, and is supported by a bracket 10 afiixed to preferably arranged as shown with the fuel supply pipe underneath it. v
The pipe d is supplied with steam. from the boiler a and the pipe 0 with liquid fuel from a suitable source of supply, herein represented as a tank 12, and provision is made for automatically and substantially simultaneously controlling the supply of steam and liquid fuel to the fire box of the boiler, by means of the pressure of the steam in the boiler. Tothis end, both pipes d, c, are connected with a controlling device which is connected with the boiler and is responsive to the pressure therein.
' The controlling device may and preferably will be made as herein shown, (see Fig. 2), and consists of a cylinder or casing 15 provided'at its lower end with a removablehead 16 between which and said casing is -interposed a diaphragm 17, which supports a piston in the form of a cup 18, which is open at its upper end for the reception of the lower end of a spring 19, whose up- 20, which in turn bears against an adjustable stop in the form of a threaded rod 21, which extends" through a threaded openingin a cross wall 22 of the casing 15.
The piston or cup 18'has attached to it a rod 23, which is extended out through the caslng 15 and into a fitting 24, provided with a removable nipple 25 which forms a valve casing for a needle valve 26 forming the upper end of the rod 23.
The nipple 25 is connected by a pipe 30 with the boiler a for the passage of steam under pressure from the boiler into the fitting 24, from which it passes to the nozzle e through the pipe 03, which is'connected Wltll the fitting 24. The passage of steam 17 in opposition to said spring, said boiler being connected by a pipe 32 with the head of the casing so as to admit steam into the closed by steam pres-- casing below the diaphragm. "The piston rod 23 is rendered steam-tight by a suitable packing nut 33 in a manner well understood. By means of the screw rod 21, the spring 19 may be regulated to permit the needle valve to be opened thereby when the steam pressure in the boiler falls below a predetermined amount, and to be closed by the steam pressure acting on the diaphragm when the latter equals or exceeds said amount.
The casing 15 has attached to it a fittin 40 having a nipple 41, which is connected by a pipe 42 with the fuel supply tank 12, and said fitting is provided with a second nipple 43 with which the supply pipe 0 is connected. The flow of liquid fuel from the supply tank 12 to the nozzle 0 is controlled by a needle valve 44 located in the fitting 40 and cooperating with a port 45 in a wall 46 in said fitting between the nipples 41, 43. Theneedle valve 44 as shown is enlarged at its upper end to form a piston 48, which slides in the fitting 40 and has cooperating with it a screw 49 carried by the long arm of a lever 50 whose short arm is extended through a slot 51 in the casing 15 and into the path of movement of the piston 18, to be engaged and moved by said piston when the latter is moved by the excess boiler pressure acting on the diaphragm 17.
By reference to Fig. 2, it will be seen that when the excess boiler pressure moves the diaphragm 17 to close the steam supply valve 26, it simultaneously closes the fuel supply valve 44 through the piston 18, lever 50'and screw 49,- and when the boiler pressure falls below the predetermined amount, the spring 19 acting on the piston 18 opens the steam supply valve and simultaneously relieves the pressure of the piston on. the
lever 5Q and permits the fuel supply valve 44 tobe opened by a spring 53, which is 10- cated. in the fitting 40 between the enlarged portion of the needle valve 49 and the wall 46. I
, From the above description, it will be seen that a single apparatus or device which is responsive to the pressure in the boiler,
mosses controls both the supply of steam and the supply of liquid fuel to the fire box of the boiler, and that when the steam supply is shut ofi from the boiler the fuel supply is shut off simultaneously or substantially so,
with the result that fuel is not supplied to the fire box when the steam supply is shut off, and consequently an excess of fuel is not present in the fire box. at any time while the apparatus is in operation, with decided beneficial results, in that a'cleaner and better combustion is obtained, which prevents carbonization of the boiler tu'bes, yielding a greater heating effect with a minimum amount of oil and with a minimum size of boiler and further the boiler remains in effective condition for a maximum length of time without cleaning.
I have herein shown one construction of controlling device, which I may prefer, but it is not desired to limit the invention to the particular construction shown.
Claims:
1. The combination with a casing provided with a fluid inlet, a piston in thecasing adapted to be moved in one direction by the fluid, a spring within. the casing and arranged to move the piston in the opposite direction, a valve without the casing having a valve stem extended into the casing to be moved by the said piston, a lever actuated by the piston, a second valve actuated by the lever, and means to move the second valve in a direction opposite to that in which it is moved by the lever.
2. The combination with a casing provided with a fluid inlet, a piston in said casing movable in one direction by fluid admitted into said casingfithrough said inlet, a valve having a valve stem extended into said casing and operatively connected with said piston to be moved thereby, a second valve external to said casing, and a lever for actuating said second valve, said lever being extended into said casing to be actuated by the said piston.
