Be it known that 1', JAMES H. MoN'rcoM- ERY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Butte, in the county of Silver Bow, State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grease-Dispensing Apparatus, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the figures of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in grease dispensing apparatus.
An object of my invention is to provide a dispensing apparatus of this character, which can be readily attached to a receptacle such as a barrel, and the entire contents of the receptacle dispensed in predetermined amounts with each operation of the lever.
A further object of my invention is to provide an apparatus of this character which forms a support for the receptacle and having details of structure and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described.

Referring now to the drawings, 1 represents the receptacle from which the grease is to be dispensed and which is preferably in the form of a cylindrical barrel and is the original container in which the grease is shipped from the factory. The bottom 2 of the barrel is provided with an upwardly turned flange 2 secured to' the inside of the barrel and provided with an elongated slot 3 extending partially across the same and through which the grease is forced into the dispensing and measuring cylinder as wiil be later described. The slot 3 is closed by a cover 3 pivoted at and held in position by screws 5 and whereby the grease is held in the barrel during the shipping thereof.
The dispensing apparatus consists of a circular plate 4 to correspond with the shape of the bottom. of the receptacle and is provided with an upwardly extending annular flange 5 which surrounds the lower end of the receptacle and is secured thereto by means of set screws 6 which pass through the flange 5 and engage the outer face of the barrel. The said plate 4, as shown is spaced from the bottom of the barrel and is provided witlra downwardly buiged portion 8 which corresponds in size with the elongated opening 3 in the bottom 2 of the receptacle. The plate 4 as shown in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings is spaced some distance below the bottom of the receptacle and on each side of the downwardly bulged portion 8, is provided the upwardly extending flanges 8 which engage the, lower face of the bottom 2 on opposite sides of the opening 8.
Within the downwardly bulged portion 8 of the plate 4 is a'cylindrical member 9 having one end open and the opposite end contracted as indicated at 10 and to which is connected a flexible pipe 11 whereby the rease is forced to the desired point as will e hereinafter more fully described.
The cylindrical member is secured to the plate a in any desired manner and has its upper face cut away as indicated at 12 whereby the grease can enter the same through the opening 3 in the bgttom of the receptacle. Within the cylindrical member 9 is a second member 13 having one end closed as indicated at 14: and its opposite end open and communicating with the contracted portion 10 of the outer cylindrical member. The inner member is provided with a cutaway portion 15 corresponding with the cutaway portion 12 of the outer member and registering as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings, so that the grease can enter the inner cylinder.
The end 14 of the inner member 13 is provided with a circular opening 16 and com municating therewith is a rectangular opening 17. Within the inner cylindrical member or pump barrel is a piston 18 which has its piston rod 19 extending out through the opening 16 in the end 14 of the inner cylindrical member. The piston rod is provided with a fin 20 which is spirally arranged ad j'acentthe piston as indicated at 21, the remainder of the fin extending parallel with the piston rod. The piston rod be 0nd the spirally arranged portion of the n is rotatably and longitudinally mounted in the bearing 22 carried by the upper face of the plate 4.
Secured to the side of the receptacle 1 is a narrow plate 23 which has its upper end turned downwardly over the upper end of the receptacle and its lower end riveted or otherwise secured to the flange 5 of the plate 4.- The plate 23 about midway its length is provided with a guideway 23' in which is removably mounted an outwardly extending arm 24', to which is intermediately pivoted at 26 the lever 25. A suitable stop in the guideway serves as a support for the head of the arm 24. The lower end of the lever 25 has aslot 27 into which extends a pin 28 carried by the outer end of the piston rod 19 and whereby the piston rod is moved in and out in a straight horizontal line.
Carried by the upper face of the plate 4 are two straps 29 and 30 which support a barrel 31 in which is arranged acoil spring 32. Passing through said barrel 31 is a rod 33 which has its outer end turned laterally and outwardly as indicated at 34' so as to bring it close to the piston rod 19. The piston rod 19 is provided with a lateral extension 34 which engages the portion 33 of the rod and moves it inwardly. One end of the spring 32 is connected at 32 to the left hand end of the barrel, as shown in Fig. 6, and the opposite end is connected to the rod 33 at 33, which passes outwardly through the collar 35, carried by thebarrel 31. The spring normally holds the rod 33 forced to the left, as shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings. The inner end of the rod 33 has pivotally mounted thereon the pawl 36 which engages the ratchet 37 keyed upon the shaft 38. The pawl 36 rests upon the upper face of the plate 4 and the shaft 38 extends through the bottom 2 of the rece tacle and has threads thereon. Within t e barrel above the grease'isa follower 39 which has a threaded opening 40 through which the shaft 38 is screwed and at the lower endof the shaft is a ratchet 37, whereby the follower is moved downwardly by the rota tion of the ratchet as will be later described. The outer periphcy of the follower has a leather or rubber ring 41 which en ages the inner face of the receptacle and orces all of the grease down and prevents any from passing upwardly above the follower. The pawl 36- is so constructed that when the device is attached to the barrel upon the inward movement of the rod 33 the pawl engages the ratchet 37 and rotates it and upon the backward movement the pawl rides over the teethof the ratchet and assumes a position to again turn the ratchet upon the forward movement of the rod. The spring 32 moves the rod to the left so as to bring the pawl into operative position and thus the follower is forced downwardly a slight distance with each movement of the piston rod lever 25. The threaded bar 38 is first inserted through the-bottom of the barrel and forced through the grease to the upper end of the barrel, when the follower is placed in the barrel with the opening above the rod. When the device is applied to the original'container, such as a barrel, a rod or other member may-be placed in the opening in the end of the barrel and extends through the opening in the follower to hold the follower in its roper position while the barrel is being filled with grease. It
might be, however, that the rod and ratchet would be arranged inthe barrel and sold as a part thereof.
The lower face'of the plate 4 is provided with two cleats 42 and 43 by means of which the axle 44 carrying the wheels 45 are secured to the device. ;Th1s shaft, as shown, is at one side of thec iter of the grease receptacle so that the same'w'ill not tilt. The
bottom plate 4 has secured thereto a caster 46 whereby the device is mounted so that 1t can be rolled from place to place.

WVhen'the spiral portion of the fin 20 reaches the opening 17 the inner cylinder 13 is caused to rotate one half a revolution to bring the openings 12 and 15 opposite and the grease under compression enters the inner member and the machine is ready for another operation.
Having thus described my invention,what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination with a receptacle, of a support detachably secured to the receptacle, a cylinder carried by the support and in communication therewith, means for forcingthe grease from the receptacle to the cylinder, a piston for forcing the grease from the cylinder, and means operated by the forward movement of the piston for closing the communication between the cylinder and the receptacle during the time the piston is forcing the grease'from the cylinder.
2. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination with a receptacle having an elongated opening, a stationary cylinder having an opening corresponding with the opening in the receptacle, a rotary cylinder within the stationary cylinder and having a corresponding opening, a piston within the rotary cylinder and held against rotation, a piston rod carried by the piston and a spiral fin carried by the piston rod and adapted to rotate thg rotary cylinder to bring the registering openings out of alinenient during the movement of the piston for forcing the grease from the cylinder.
3. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination with a receptacle having an elongated opening, a stationary cylinder having an opening corresponding with the opening in the receptacle and communicating therewith, a rotary cylinder in the stationary cylinder and having an opening corresponding with the opening in the stationary cylinder, a piston in the rotary cylinder, a piston rod connected to the piston and extending through the head of the rotary cylinder, a spiral fin carriedby the piston rod adjacent the piston and having a straight portion throughout the remainder of the piston rod passing through an opening in the head of the rotary cylinder, means for reciprocating the piston rod, whereby the cylinder is rotated for bringing the openings out of alinement during the forcing movement of the piston, and
- having an opening corresponding with the means operated by the piston rod for forcing the grease from the receptacle to the rotary cylinder. a
4. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination with a receptacle having an elongated opening, a stationary cylinder having an opening corresponding with the opening in the receptacle and communicating therewith, a rotary cylinder opening in the stationary cylinder, a reciprocating piston in the rotary cylinder and held against rotation, a piston rod operating the piston, means operated by the reciprocation of the piston rod for rotating the cylinder during the outward movement of the piston, a follower in the receptacle, a worm g leared to the follower and passing through t e receptacle, a ratchet carried'by the worm below the receptacle, a rod adjacent the ratchet, a pawl carried by the rod and engaging the ratchet, a spring normally holding the rod outwardly, and a projection carried by the piston rod and engaging the rod on the forward movement of the piston for rotating the ratchet for forcing the follower downward during each movement of the piston. 5. The combination with an original receptacle containing a follower having a screw working therethrough, a ratchet on the screw on the outside of the receptacle, of a housing secured to the receptacle and inclosing the ratchet, means for operating said ratchet for forcing the grease from the 100 receptacle and means for receiving the grease from the receptacle and forcing-it to a distant point.
8. The combination with an original receptacle having an elongated opening and a removable cover therefor and containing a follower having a screw extending on tne outside of the receptacle, a ratchet carried. by the screw, of a cylinder removably secured to the receptacle and having an open- 3,19 ing communicating with the opening in the receptacle, a piston within the cylinder for forcing the grease therefrom and means oprated by the reciprocation of the piston for operating theratchet for forcing the grease 11 from the rece tacle.

9. Anapparatus of the character described, comprising a support for a receptacle, a cylinder carried by the support and having an open upper face, a piston for forcing the grease from the cylinder, and means operated by the piston for closing the upper open face of the cylinder during the time the piston is forcing the grease from the cylinder.
10. An apparatus of the character described, comp-rising a support for a receptacle, a cylinder carried by the support and having an open upper face, a rotary cylinder within the stationary cylinder and having a corresponding opening, a piston within the rotary cylinder and held against rotation, a
piston rod carried by the piston and a spiral fin carried by the piston rod and adapted to rotate the rotary cylinder to bring the registering openings out of alinement during the movement of the piston When forcing the grease from the cylinder.
11.
