- CHR S R; sIMoNs, or ARMOUR, SOUTH DAKOTA.
T 0 all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, CHRIS R. SIMONS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Armour, in the county of Douglas and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft Appliances, of which the'following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in draft appliances and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with a tractor and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby a hitching member may be shifted in a direction transversely of the line of travel of the tractor as the occasions of practice may require.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this general character particularly adapted for use in connection with a farm tractor for hauling a plow and which embodies means whereby the plow may be caused to properly cut when the tractor is running on a side hill.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved draft appliance whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention Will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a View in top plan of a draft appliance constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention, and
Fig. 2 is a view in front elevation of my improved appliance.
My improved attachment or appliance as herein disclosed comprises an elongated beam 1 having secured adjacent its opposite ends the laterally directed castings 2 which are adapted to be suitably secured to a tractor frame and the castings 2 are preferably of a length to position the beam 1 in advance of the draft bar generally employed upon a mam APPLIANCE,
Specification of Letters Patent. 'Patent ed J ljne 10, .1919.

tractor. One of the castings. 2 is capable of adjustment longitudinally of the beam 1 so that the proper attachment of the beam 1 to the tractor is-assur'ed; 1 1 Supported bythe beam 1 intermediate the castings 2 is a member 3 having sliding movement longitudinally of the beam 1 and this member 3 serves as a hitch to which a plow or other ground working element' is adapted to be coupled. The member 3 is substantially U-shaped in cross section, and the base or intermediate portion thereof contacts with the inner longitudinal face of the beam 1, while the side members of said member 3 terminate in advance of the beam 1. The extended portions of the member 3 are provided with vertically registering openings whereby the desired hitch or coupling therewith may be had.
By having the member 3 constructed as just described, it will be at once noted that the strain of the load imposed upon the member 3 will be directly carried by the beam 1, and in an efi'ective manner. This construction of the member 3 also results in extreme simplicity of the device, and which feature in itself has proven in practice to be of utmost importance.
An end portion of the beam lis provided with an upstanding plate 4 having its upper edge arcuate and provided with spaced notches 5 to receive a conventional latch 6 carried by the lever 7. The lever 7 is pivotally engaged intermediate its length with the plate 4.
Pivotally engaged with the lower end of the lever 7 is a rod or bar 8 which is also pivotally engaged with the hitch member 3. In practice it is preferred that the member 3 have a maximum throw or travel of sub stantially eight inches.
It has been fully demonstrated in practice that in drawing a plow by a tractor, the tractor when riding upon a side hill has a tendency to gradually slide down resulting in the plow cutting either too wide or too narrow. By the present device this disadvantage may be readily overcome as the hitch member 3 may be readily shifted in the desired direction when a side hill is reached and shifted back to its normal position when level ground is again reached.
From the foregoing description, it isv thought to be obvious that a draft appliance constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated and it will also be obvious that my invention is Wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim: I
An attachment for a tractor comprising a beam, laterally directed castings carried by the opposite end portions of the beam and adapted to be secured to the tractor, said hitch member being substantially ,U-shape in form with its intermediate portion contacting with the inner face of the beam, the side portions of the hitch member extending beyond the outer face of the beam, the extended side portions of the member each being provided with means to effect a coupling therewith, a space between the extended side portions of the member being free and unobstructed. V
In testimony whereof I hereunto aifix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
