Specification of Letters Patent. Patented 1 1 10 1919 Application filed July 19, 1915. Serial No. 40,791.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN S. S. FULT N, of the city of Chicago, in the State'of Illinois, formerly of the town of Franklin, in the State of Pennsylvania, in .the United States of America, have, invented certain new and useful Improvements in Air-Feeding Devices for Furnaces, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in air feeding devices for furnaces. The object of my invention is to provide means by which air may be fed into the furnace and distributed over the surface of the fire, in order to allow of a more complete combustion in the furnace. My invention consists essentially in the provision of an air inlet pipe leading to a chamber in which the air may be heated and discharged through a perforated ring. The principle involved is the same as that described in my United States Letters Patent No. 711,044., for improvements in locomotive boilers, granted on October 14th, 1902.
The preferred construction of my invention consists in the provision of inner and outer concentric rings connected by a pipe passing from without the outer ring, through said outer ring and terminating in said inner ring: a second and shorter pipe substantially in line with the first pipe connects the other side of the inner ring with the outer ring, and the outer ring is provided with small downwardly inclined holes at frequent intervals.
My invention is more fully described with the aid of the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows my attachment arranged in a furnace.

Referring more particularly to the drawings 1 designates a furnace, on the outside of which an air inlet pi e 3 is arranged. The connection 4, preferzibly integral with the pipe 5, may be connected to the outer inlet pipe 3 by means of a nipple 2 or any other preferred means. The pipe 5 passes through the outer ring 6 into the inner ring 7 The air then travels semi-circularly to left or right around the said ring 7 and through the pipe 8. It thus becomes thoroughly heated, and passes to left and right around the ring 6 discharging through the holes 10.
The inlet pipe 3 should be substantially larger in cross section'than rings 6 and 7 so that the air is heated faster than it is drawn into the fire, and in this way an ample supply of heated air is insured.
In the case of domestic hot water heaters I prefer to make use of one of the holes plugged with a removable plug in the furnace side. But of course the air inlet may be introduced into the firebox through any suitably located hole.
A suitable valve attachment 11 may be introduced in the inlet pipe outside the furnace, so that the supply of air may be checked or entirely out ofi when desired, and the furnace worked without the aid of my inventlon.
It will be found that there will be a constant suction at the mouth of the supply pipe, and that the heated air mixing with the gases in the furnace will materially assist the combustion of the said gases.
Of course the inner and the outer rings need not be rectangular in section as shown in the accompanying drawings, and any other shaped rings may be employed if desired.
Moreover I may make alterations and modifications in my device provided that the said alterations and modifications fall within the scope of what I claim.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination with a furnace, a conduit leading into the fire boX above the grate, and a plurality of concentric hollow rings located in the fire box, the innermost of which is imperforate and is connected to and communicates with said conduit, the outermost ring having a plurality of foraminous downwardly directed faces, and means establishing communication between the innermost and outermost rings at a point diametrically opposite the point at which said imperforate ring connects with said conduit.
2. In combination with a furnace, an air heating device including a valved conduit having one end entering the fire box of said furnace, a plurality of concentric hollow rings located in the fire box, the innermost ring forming an imperforate heating chamher for the air and the outermost forming a foraminous dispensing device, a pipe connecting with the innermost ring and eX- tending through and thereby supporting the outermost ring and connectin with said valved conduit, said pipe placing the con-' duit and inner ring in communication and a secondpipe connecting the innermost and outermost ringsat a point diametrically opposite the entrance of the first named pipe for conducting air from the inner ring to the outer ring;
3. In combination With a furnace, an air heating device including a valved conduit having one end entering the fire box of said furnace, a plurality of concentric hOllO'W rings of diamond shape cross section located in said fire box, the innermost thereof form- Copies of this patent may be obtained for ing an imperforate heating chamber and the outermost forming a foraminous dispensing device, a pipe connecting With the innermost ring and extending through and thereby supporting the outermost ring and connecting with said valved conduit, said pipe placing the inner ring and conduit in communication and a second pipe connecting the innermost and outermost rings at a point diametrically opposite the entrance of the first named pipe for conducting air from the inner'to the outer ring.
