NON-REFILLABLE BOTTLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 19, 1918. Serial No. 212,709.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, lVuLLMoNnn D. CROAKni, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at G-lencara lVarr-a, Queensland, Australia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Non-Refillable Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in bottle closures, and the principal object of the invention is to provide means for preventing the refilling of the bottle after the same has been emptied.
Another object of the invention is to locate the non-refilling means at a point adjacent the lower end of the bottle neck and at a distance from the mouth so as to make it difficult for the said means to be tampered with.
Another object of the invention is to form said means of a single casting having an interior recess, with side recesses in the top connected therewith, and a central tube in the bottom of the casting leadin into said recess, and a ball valve normally 0 osing said tube and entering a depression in the top of the casting when the bottle is tilted.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple and durable in construction, reliable and efficient in operation and one which can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a minimum cost.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a bottle neck with the non-refilling device shown in elevation therein.

Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a view showing the position of the parts with the bottle tilted.
In these figures 1 represents the bottle neck which, adjacent its lower end is provided with a reduced portion 2 which forms an annular shoulder 3 Where it joins the part 1. This collar is to receive the non-refilling device indicated generally by the numeral l. This device consists of a circular casting made of any suitable material and provided with a recess 5 passing laterally therethrough. Thus a member is formed provided with a top 6 and bottom 7 connected together by the are shaped sides 8. I form a recess 9 in each side of the top directly above the recess 5, said recesses extending entirely through the top and communicating with the recess 5. I also form a central hole 10 in the bottom 7 and into this hole I extend a tube 11 preferably made of glass and having its end adjacent the top 6 and I form a semi-circular depression 12 in the under face of said top directly above the end of the tube. 18 indicates a ball valve, made of any suitable material, and made of such a size Patented June 3, 1919 as to partly fit in the top of said tube so as r to close the same but being prevented from passing through said tube. 14% represents a sleeve surrounding the casting and tightly filling the space between said casting and the interior of the bottle neck, said sleeve being preferably made of cork.
hen the bottle is upright the valve 13 will rest on the upper end of the tube 11 thus closing said tube and preventing any liquid from entering the bottle. lVhen the bottle is tilted the valve will drop into the depression 12 and the liquid will flow through the tube into the recess 5 and out of the recesses 9 in the top 6, into the neck and so flow out of the bottle, but ust as soon as the bottle is placed upright again said valve will drop back upon the top of the tube so as to close the same. If an attempt is made to fill the bottle by turning the same up-side-down this will also meet with failure as the liquid rising around the tube will form an air seal, thus effectually preventing the entrance of the liquid in the bottle.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that. I may make slight changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is 2- The combination with a bottle neck, of a casting therein provided with a recess passing entirely through the same from one side to the other and leaving a top and bottom and a pair of sides, said top having notches in its side edges communicating with said recess and a central depression on its under face, said bottom having a central hole,
