Application filed August 10, 1917. Serial N 0. 185,483.
7 new and useful'lmprovements in Reversible- Sheet-Registering Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sheet registering means for paper handling machines, and has for its rimar ob'ect to rovide im roved means for registering a sheet by gaging some other than the forwardly presented edge thereof. The preferred embodiment of my invention shown on the drawings contemplates a suitable arrangement of a gage to register a sheet according to its rear edge. In some forms of folding machines, it has been found desirable in order to meet certain trade requirements, to feed the sheets with their usual gaging edges reversed in position with respect to their direction of movement through the machine. In order to meet the requirements of these conditions in a simple and economical manner, the present invention contemplates, for example, having the usual gage edges of the sheets reversed, each of said sheets being fed to the machine in a plane different from that in which the reverse gage is stationed and afterward moved into the plane of said gage which thereupon aids in registering the sheet. More specific objects of invention will appearin the specification and be pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the drawing which shows a referred embodiment ofmy invention in si e elevation, parts being broken away and part shown in section.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, and to the embodiment shown therein, a frame 1 of a'folding machine is provided with a cross rail 2' to which are rigidly se- 7 cured irregularly shaped brackets 3 which carry extensions at to which is mortised the forwardly presented edge of a feed board 5. Journaled within the brackets 3 is a feed roller shaft 6 which carries feed rollers 7, suitable drop rollers 8 being journaled in spaced arms 9 which oscillate about the axis of a rock shaft 10 which is journaled in upwardly extending bracket arms '11. Sheets which are fed one by one to the rollers 7 and 8, are delivered to endless feed tapes 12 which pass by the rollers 7 and have the upper runs thereof traveling toward the left according to the drawing, under the guide rollers 13, around the guide rollers 14, and having their lower runs travcling toward the right. Suitable stops 16 are mounted on a transverse rod 17 which are carried by suitable nuts 18 threaded on oppositely arranged feed screws 19 by means of which said stops 16 may be moved to and fro to meet the requirements of different sized sheets which may be fed through the machine. The screws 19 are journaled in suitable brackets 20 and provided on their outer ends with bevel gears 21 meshing with bevel gears 22 keyed to a transverse shaft 23 which may be provided with a crank for effecting the changes in position of the stops 16. As each sheet is fed forwardly by'the upper runs of the tapes 12, the forwardly presented edge (not the gaging edge) is intercepted by the stops '16, the plane of travel of the upper runs of V horizontally and secured in any desired position by means of the thumb nuts 26which' bind it to a cross bar 27 The cross bar 27 is mounted on laterally spaced rods 28 carried by bracket arms 29 which are coaxially mounted with the rock shaft 10. The oscillatory movement of the rods 28 and hence of the gages 24 may be imparted by the drop rollers, operating mechanism or by any other suitable means (not shown on the drawing). Laterally displaced with reference'to the feed tapes 12 are a plurality of sheet engaging bars or rods 30 provided with inclined slots 31, the walls of which are 'in slidable engagement with suitable pins 32 which raise and lower the bars 30 as they are reciprocated by means of yokes 33 rigioo ed on the frame 1. A lever arm 42 which is keyed to the rock shaft 36 has one end pivotally connected to a spring rod 43 which retains the cam roller 38 in running contact with the cam 89. It will be understood from this description that while the drop rollers 8 are feeding a sheet onto the tapes 12, the sheet gages 2% are elevated to permit the sheet to pass without obstruction. During the same interval the cam 39 is retaining the rods or bars 30 in their left hand position so that their upper sheet engaging surfaces are disposed below the plane of the sheet. As the drop rollers are lifted, the sheet gages 24 are lowered and when the cam roller 38 has dropped to the inner run of the cam 39, the rods or bars 30 are moved toward the right, and guided upwardly by the engagement of their inclined slots 31 with the pins 32 to lift the sheet from oil the tapes 12 while at the same time imparting a retrograde movement thereto which brings their gaging edges (disposed toward the rear) against said gages 2%. The lateral displacement which is imparted to the sheet '(means for this movement not being shown on the drawing) completes the register of the sheet which then continues its movement through the machine.
I claim:
1. In sheet-registering mechanism, means for feeding a sheet forwardly into position to be registered, means for terminating the forward movement of said sheet, and means for imparting a retrograde movement to said sheet to bring it into registered position, said retrograde movement means being adapted to move the sheet out of engagement with the forward movement feeding means.
2. In sheet-registering mechanism, means for feeding a sheet forwardly, means for intercepting said sheet in its forward movement, a sheet-registering gage outside the plane of said forward movement and past which said sheet is fed during its forward movement and means for moving said sheet out of the plane of its forward movement into a plane of movement including said gage, the last-mentioned means being adapted by its movement to move the rear edge of said sheet against said gage. V
3. In sheet-registering mechanism, means for feeding a sheet forwardly, means for intercepting said sheet in its forward movement, a sheet-registering gage past which said sheet is fed during its forward movement, and means for imparting a retrograde movement to said sheet to register the same against said gage, said retrograde movement means being adapted to move said sheet into a different plane of movement while registering it against said gage.
4;. In sheet-feeding mechanism, sheetfeeding tapes, a stop disposed in the path of a sheet moved by said tapes, a sheet-registering gage disposed above said tapes, and sheet-engaging means having a combined upward and rearward movement for lifting said sheet from said tapes and moving it into engagement with said gage.
5. In sheet-feeding mechanism, sheetfeeding tapes, a stop which intercepts a sheet fed by said tapes, a sheet gage disposed above said tapes, and means normally disposed below the plane of said tapes but adapted to lift said sheet from said tapes, said means being adapted by its lifting movement to move said sheet into a plane of movement which is intersected by said gage.
6. In sheet-feeding mechanism, sheetfeeding tapes, a stop which intercepts a sheet fed by said tapes, a sheet gage disposed above said tapes, and means normally disposed below the plane of said tapes but adapted to move said sheet upwardly into a plane of movement in which it will be intercepted by said gage, said means rising above the plane of said tapes in its movement toward said gage and falling below the plane of said tapes in its movement away from said gage.
T. In sheet-feeding mechanism, sheetfeeding tapes, a stop disposed to intercept a sheet fed by said tapes, a sheet gage disposed above the plane of said tapes, sheetengaging bars reciprocable between said tapes, and means operated by the reciprocatory movement of said bars for elevating said bars to lift a sheet from said tapes and move it against said gage.
8. In sheet-feeding mechanism, sheetfeeding tapes, a'stop disposed to intercept a sheet fed by said tapes, a sheet gage disposed above the plane of said tapes, and sheet-engaging bars reciprocable between said tapes and adapted to move the rear edge of said'sheet against said gage, said bars being provided with means for elevating them bodily during their movement opposite to that of the tapes.
