FEEDING DEVICE FOR STAY-APPLYING MACHINES.

a citizen of the United States, and resident of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inFeeding Devices for Stay-Applying Machines, of'
which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of.ma
for operating the same in a manner whereby it will be caused on its forward feeding stroke to engageand carry forward the strip and then become released from said strip at thelimit of its forward stroke so as to move backwardly without producing any corresponding backward movement of the strip. Such feeding device comprises a carrier having mounted thereon two cooperating gripping members arranged to permit of the passage of the stay-strip therebetween, one of which members is stationary with respect to the carrier and the other pivoted for movement to and from a gripping position relative to said stationary member. Connected with this movable gripping member is an actuating means which, in the operation of the machine, first rocks said member into gripping engagement with the strip, and then, by a continuedmovement, imparts a forward stroke to the complete feed device. Such forwardstroke of the feed device determines therforward feeding of the stay strip. To produce accurate feeding, it is obvious that the upper pivoted gripping member should becaused .to firmly grip the stay strip before the feed device begins its such grip until the completion of said stroke. To accomplish this, means have heretofore been provided for holding the feed carrier in frictional engagement with a braking surface on the stationary guide-plate whereby the feed carrier is held against movement Specification of Letters Patent. 7 Patented June 3, 1919,

by its actuating means until the upper gripping member has been moved into firm gripping engagement with the stay strip. Such means, however, has not been provided with an adjustment for varying the friction between the feed carrier and the guide-plate as may be required in providing for the wear of the parts, etc, and this has been the cause of some trouble in maintaining the proper operation of the feed device in this class of machines. It has therefore been the object of my present invention to provide an improved braking. means for controlling the movement of the feed carrier on its guide-plate whereby'the desired braking action may be readily obtained under all con ditions. This object is attained by my inv vention as hereinafter described and claimed and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of part of a stay applying machine provided with my invention.

a The machine here shown as provided with my invention is a stayer of well known 50 J operating to first raise the member 12 to indicated at 5, is normally stationary and adapted to support a box-corner, while the upper one, indicated at 6, is vertically movable and adapted to press a stay-strip upon the box-corner on said lower die. The movable die 6 is mounted in a reciprocating head '7 which is actuated from a crank-pin on the drive shaft 3 through the medium of a pitman 8, in usual manner.
In the operation of the machine, the staystrip, indicated at s, is adapted to be fed from a supply reel (not shown) to a position between said presser dies, by a suitable feed device. This feed device comprises a reciprocatory carrierplate 9 slidably connected with a stationary guide plate 10 and having connected therewith two cooperating gripping members, one of which, indicated at 11, is fixed with respect to the plate 9 and arranged to engage with the stay strip at the under side thereof, and the other, indicated at 12, is pivoted to the plate 9 and arranged to engage with the stay-strip at the upper side thereof. With this construction of feed device, the movable or pivoted member 12 should be caused to cooperate with the lower member 11 to engage and carry forward the strip upon the forward stroke of the device, and to release the strip at the limit of said forward stroke and maintain such release during the return stroke of the device. Such operation of the feed device is effected in the present case by means of an actuating lever 13, pivoted .at its upper end to the frame at 14, and at its lower end connected through a link 15 with a lever arm 16 of the pivoted member 12. The lever 13 is given its forward throw by a cam 17 on the shaft 2 engaging a roll 18 thereon, and is given its return throw by a connecting spring 19. Upon the forward throw of the lever 13, the member 12 is first caused to rock downward into gripping engagement with the strip lying over the lower member, as shown in Fig. 2, after which, the continued movement of the lever effects an advance of the feed devicecomprising the carrier 9 and supported members-and engaged strip. After the lever has swung forward a predetermined distance, it is then retracted, thereby strip-releasing position by rocking its arm 16 into contact with a stop projection 20 on the carrier plate 9, as shown in Fig. l, and then returning the feed device to its starting position.
The machine as thus far described is of usual construction and operation and does not require a more detailed description for the proper understanding of my present invention.
The carrier 9 as here shown is provided at its rear side with a supporting and guiding rib 21 which is fitted to slide within an open elongated slot 22 in the guide-plate 10.
As a means for retarding the carrier 9 against feeding movement until its gripping jaw or member 12 has been moved into stripengaging position, it is held in frictional engagement with one side of the guide-plate 10 by means of a sliding shoe 23 at the opposide side of said guide-plate, with which it is connected by a bolt 24 having its adjusting screw or nut 25 at the front side of the carrier, as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 4t. A coiled spring 26 interposed between the carrier and said adjusting screw 25 acts to effect a yielding engagement of both the carrier and its connected shoe with the braking surfaces at opposite sides of the stationary guide-plate with which they cooperate. WVith this arrangement and combination of parts, it will be understood that a turning of the adjusting screw 25 in the proper direction will provide a desired frictional engagement of the carrier and its shoe with the guide-plate, for properly controlling the action of the feed device in the manner and for the purpose hereinbefore referred to.
The adjusting screw 25 may be secured" in adjusted position by any suitable means. As here shown, I provide a self-locking means comprising a spring arm 27 secured to the carrier at 28 and at its front end having a detent 29 yieldingly engaging the adjusting screw within one of a'series of notches 30 therein, as shown- The yielding engagement of the detent 29 with the adjusting screw permits of the ready turning of the latter for purposes of adjustment or otherwise, and the notches 30 for engagement with said detent being formed to extend lengthwise of the adjusting screw, provide for the backward and forward adjustment of the screw on the threaded stem of the bolt.
Referring now to Figs. 5, 6 and 7, I have here shown a slightly modified form of my invention. In this case, an adjusting screw 35 is threaded into the guide rib 21 of the carrier 9 from the rear side of the guideplate and acts to hold the carrier and its connected shoe 23 in yielding engagement with the opposite sides of the guide-plate through a spring plate 36 interposed between the head of the adjusting screw and the shoe 23 as shown. A turning of this adjusting screw 35 operates to vary th friction between the engaging parts in substantially the same manner and for the same purpose as described with reference to the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive. As. a means for automatically locking this adj usting screw 35 in adjusted position, it is provided with a pin or detent 37 at its under side for engagement with one of a series of notches 38 in the spring plate 36. An in ward yielding of this spring plate disengages the same from the detent 37 and permits adjustment of the screw 35, following which adjustment an outward return move:
ment of the spring automatically effects a relocking of the adjusting screw therewith.
What I claim is:
In a machine of the class described, strip feeding means comprising a guide-plate, a carrier mounted for reciprocation on said guide-plate and supporting a pair of cooperating gripping members, means holding the carrier in frictional engagement with a braking surface on the guide-plate, said means comprising an adjusting screw for Varying the friction between the carrier and cooperating braking surface, and a spring Copies of this patent may be obtained for member for locking said screw in adjusted position, said spring member and the adjusting screw being provided one with a series of notches and the other with a detent engaging in said notches, for the purpose set forth.
