Description

MFA. DANDROW.
GARBAGEPAIL COVER.
APPLICATION man AUG.10. 1917.
1,305,197, Patented May 27,1919,
INVENTOR MARY A. DANDROW, OF RIDGEFIEI LD PARK, NEW JERSEY.
GARBAGE-PAIL COVER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 27, 1919.
Application filed August 10, 1917. Serial No. 185,570.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARY A. DANDRow, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Ridgefield Park, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Garbage-Pail Covers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pail cover fasteners for use particularly upon garbage pails, refuse receptacles and the like and has for its principal object the provision of a device of this character which will effectually serve to hold the cover in a closed position against the attempts of animals, etc.
Another object of the invention is to provide a fastening of this class in which the cover can be expeditiously applied and turned in either direction on the body of the pail to establish an active closed connection therewith.
A still further object of the invention resides in the provision of matin elements constituting fastening means wh1ch are respectively associated with the cover and body of the pail so as to be held against accidental injury or destruction during the handling of the pail.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangements of parts which will hereinafter be fully described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, has been illustrated, a single and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitations are necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modi-- fications within the scope of the claim may be resorted to when desired.
Figure 1, is a perspective view of a pail with a part broken away illustrating the application of the invention thereto.
Fig. 2, is a vertical section therethrough.
Fig. 3, is a section through a portion of the cover showing the bracket element of the fastening.
Fig. 4, is a sectional perspective view of portions of the cover and body of the pail showin' the application of the two" elements of the fastening with each other.
Fig.- 5, is a horizontal section: taken on the line? 5- Of- Fig. 2a
The body 1, of the pail may be of any suitable well-known construction, likewise the cover 2, but as concerns the latter it is preferred that it be provided with a flange 3, which will freely embrace the walls of the body 1, to permit of the rotation of the cover manually through the provision of a suitable handle 4.-. V
The cover 2, is provided with fixed rigid brackets 6, which are soldered or otherwise fixedly secured at 7, to the crown of the cover. These brackets depend from the cover and each is provided at its lower end with rigid horizontal extensions 8 and 9, which are arranged in the same horizontal line with each other. They may be extended to any suitable distance beyond the center of the bracket but in any instance are extended in an appreciable distance for a purpose which may be hereinafter understood. These bracket elements of the fastening may be constructed of wire bent upon itself to constitute the extensions 8 and 9. The lower edge of the flange 3, of the cover 2, is extended below said extensions 8 and 9, in order that the same will be protected and held against the casual distortion when the cover is roughly thrown about or handled.
Below the upper edge of the body 1, of the pail and arranged interiorly thereof are eyes or keepers 1010, the same being disposed at diametrically opposite points to conform with the similar arrangement of the brackets 6, on the cover. The eyes are located with such regard to the upper end of the body 1, as to freely receive the extensions 8 and 9, on the respective brackets 6, when the cover is applied and rotated.
The invention aims principally to provide an effective form of fastening which will positively hold the cover in a closed position under all ordinary circumstances and at the same time secure it against being opened by the wind or by animals. It thus follows incident to the arrangement of the mating fastening elements that the cover can be placed over the upper open end of the receptacle and then rotated in either direction, in order that the extension 8, of one bracket and the extension 9, of the other will be properly projected into the eyes or keepers 10. When thus applied the pail can be lifted by the handle. 4, and as stated it is impossible to casually cause disarrang'ement of the cover under such attempts as hereinbefore stated; It is charms-e, in View of the construction, that element 6 acts as a stop limiting the rotation of thecover in the direction of engagement.
What I claim is A fastening device for the cover of a receptacle comprising an eye member secured to the inner Wall of the receptacle leaving an unobstructed passageway immediately adjacent to said Wall and Within the eye, and an engaging member including an element projecting downwardly from the cover and spaced from the edge thereof, an offset portion constituting a foot member secured to the cover, and an element extending at a ment extending at a right angle being posi tioned to engage the eye member from either side thereof, and the element extending downwardly preventing further rotation of the cover in the direction of engagement, subsequently to the engaging operation.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
MARY A. DANDROVV.
