Be it known that I, ARTHUR G. REMHILT, citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania," have invented new and useful improvements in Phonograph Attachments, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to phonograph attachments, and one object is to provide certain novel means for guiding a thread across the needle or stylus, in order to secure improved results in the reproduction of the record.

A further object is to provide a device adapted to be carried by the casing retaining the diaphragm, said device being detachable and serving to mount a plurality of winding elements adapted-to carry a thread along opposite sides of the needle and across the edge thereof.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of elements hereinafter described and claimed.

in carrying out my invention, it provide a retaining device of resilient material includinga ring member 10, having a plurality of laterally extending ears near each end thereof, the ears of one pair being designated ll and 12 and those of the other pair being designated 13 and i l. The cars 11 and 13 may be slotted as shown at 15, and between the ears of each pair is mounted a thread winding device which may be in the form of a reel l6 rotated by a thumb member 1?.

The term thread is used in the generally accepted sense, and indicates a fibrous thread.

The arm 20 controlling the diaphragm is connected with a bar 21 mounted in the usual and ordinary manner, and the socket portion 22 for holding the needle may also be of usual construction. The needle or stylus is designated 23, and carries thereon a device formed of resilient material and shown as a whole at 25, this device including an apertured central portion 26, the aperture accommodating the shank of the needle, and the ears '2'? being bent into the position shown for retaining the elements in proper relation.

The device 25, constituting a thread guiding member, is provided with a plurality of prongs or leaf members 28, and 29 which in turn are provided with grooves 30 on the innor sides thereof, these grooves acting to guide the thread on each side. The thread also passes through apertures 31 and thence to the spools or reels 1% on each side of the casing of the diaphragm. The thread passes around the needle as shown and is shifted from time to time to a very slight extent allowing a new portion of the thread to rest on the point or extreme edge of the needle, in order to provide a new surface and pre vent undue wear.

What I claim is:

1. in a device of the class described, the

combination with a needle and mounting means therefor, of a fibrous thread, and a guiding device carried. by the needle for guiding the thread across the operative end thereof.

2. in a device of the class described, the combination with a needle and mounting means therefor, of a fibrous thread, means for guiding the thread across the operative end of the needle, and means for shifting the position of the thread.

3. In a device of the class described, a needle mounting means therefor, thread guiding means carried by the shank of needle and including plurality of groo prongs positioned on opposite sides of Patented May 2%, 1919. v

needle, and means for Winding a thread carried by the guiding means.

4. In a device of the class described, the combination with the casing of the diaphragm, of a ring member surrounding said casing, reels mounted on said ring member, a needle and mounting means therefor, thread guiding means carried by the needle, and a fibrous thread passing through the guidingmeans and engaged by the Winding 10 means.

5. An attachment for honograph needle comprising a thread gui ing member formed With shank engaging device and with prongs grooved on the inner surface thereof. 15
