and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hat-Renovating Machines,
of which the following is-a specication.
My invention relates to improvements in hat renovating machines wherein steamingv elements are provided for the crown and brim portions of a hat and operate in conjunction with pressing means for laying the nap; and 'the objects of my invention are- First, to provide an improved hat reno'-,
vating machine having simple and eective y means for steaming the brim as well as the crown of the hat;
Second, to provide an improved deviceofthe character described having means for altering the shape of the hatbrim;
Third, to provide improved means for shaping the hat brim which maybe changed to conform to various shapes; and
Fourth, to provide improved means f or pressing and layinv` the nap of the hat brim while said brim islbeing steamed. l I accomplish these several objects by means of the device disclosed in the drawings forming a part of the present specification wherein like characters of reference are used to designate similar parts throughout the said specification and rawings, and in which` Figure 1 is a plan view, partly broken, of my improved renovator;
Fig. 2 is a frontelevation of my improved device partly broken to disclose a portion of the interior of one of the steaming elements;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged broken plan view of the brim steaming element;
Fig. 4 is `a vertical sectional view taken on line 4 4 of Fig. 3 in the direction indicated and disclosinga hat brim in position; and
Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 5 5 of Fig. 2. n
Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 is used to designate a cylindrical crown steaming element having a converging bottom 2. mounted upon a valve controlled steam connection 3 leading from a steam pipe 4.
The connection`3 is provided at its upper end, inside ofthe crown steaming element 1, with a series of radial elbows 6 to direct Specication of Letters Patent.

steam onto the 'sides of the element 1 to prevent said steam from being directed directly onto the crown of Aa hat being steamed.
To further prevent steam lfrom being directed onto the crown of a hat being treated I have provided a perforateddiaphragm or partition 7 withinthe crown steaming element 1- slightly above the elbows 6 and a suiiicient distance below the top of the element 1 to permit the full insertion cf a hat crown.
A hollow arcuate brim steaming element 8 is provided with a depending funnel ortion 9secured to a second valve contro ed steam connection 11 in turn connected to the steam pipe 4 as a means offsupportf The arcuate brim steamin element 8 is also provided with a 'detacha le arcuate exforated top 14 over which is mounted a fabric pad 16 held in position by a fabric cover 17 in turn detachably 'mounted upon the arcuate perforated top 14 by means of a retaining frame 18.
The shape of the perforated top 14 is designed to conform to the shapeA of the hat brim or to a shape to which the hat brim is to be altered. 1 l
The pad 16 and cover 17 are provided to prevent contact of a hat brim with the steam heated perforated top 14.
An arcuate cover 19 isV hingedly mounted as at 21 upon the extension 12 and matches in shape with said extension 12. The cover 19 is provided with a rsuitable handle 22 by means of which a pressure may be applied to the said cover. I
The cover 19 is also provided on its under surface with a pad 23 held in position by a fabric cover 24 in turn detachably retained upon -said cover 19 by means of a frame 26 which surrounds the said cover 19 and exerts suilicient pressure upon the pads 23 and cover 24 to effectively retain them in posi-l When steam is admitted to one element the valve 31 prevents the passageof steam to the other element.
In. operation a hat to be steamed first has the crown thereof inserted within the element 1 until the brim rests upon the upper edge of said element.- After the crown has been suliciently steamed the said crown is ironed in the usual manner.
To reshape and renovate the brim the said brim 33 is applied with the top side or surface thereof onto the pad 16 and cover 17 on the perforated top 14 and tightly held against said pad 16 and cover 17 by pressing the arcuate cover 19 tightly downward against said brim 33, said pressure being applied by means of the handle 22.
When the steam is admitted through the pipe or connection '11 it is directed into the interior of the arcuate brim steaming clemen-t 8 and away from the hat brim 33 on the top thereof by means of a pair of downwardly extending elbows 34 secured within said element 8 and on top of the steam connection 1-1.
As the pad 16 and cover 17 on the vperforated top 14 are heated by the steam the heat is transmitted by said pad 16 and cover 17 to the hat brim 3 3 and also, through the hat brim 33, to the pad 23 and cover 24 ofthe cover '19. V
The pressure of the cover 19, and the pad 16 and cover 17 thereof, onto the steamed brim 33 readily valters the shape of said brim and causes said brim toconform4 to shape of the top 14. The extension 12 and top 14 thereof are detachably mounted upon the arcuate steaming element 8 so that extensions having various shapes conforming to the existing styles in hat brims may be substituted.
It is obvious from the foregoing that I have provided a new and improved hat renovator having crown and brim steaming elements by means of which a hat crown may be steamed and the brim. reshaped.
It is also evident that I have provided an improved device of the character described wherein the brim reshaping means may be altered or removed to receive other brim shaping means of different shape.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A hat renovating machine comprisin a crown steaming element; an arcuate brlm steaming and forming element; a padded cover hingedly mounted upon the brim steaming element; and means for draining condensed steam from the elements to retain a dry interior to said elements.
2. A hat renovating machine comprising a crown steaming element; a hollow arcuate brim steaming and forming element having the top thereof perforated to permit the passage of steam; a fabric pad arranged over the perforated top; and an arcuate padded cover hingedly mounted upon the arcuate element to retain a hat brim onto the fabric pad to shape the said brim.

A hat `renovating machine comprising a crown steaming element; a hollow arcuate brim steaming and forming element having the top thereof perforated to permit the passage of steam; a fabric pad arranged over the perforated top; and an arcuate padded cover hingedly mounted upon the arcuate element to retain a hat brim ontol the fabric pad to shape the said brim; and means for conveying steam into either element.

A hat renovating machine comprising a crown steaming element; a hollow arcuate brim steaming and forming element having the top thereof perforated to permit the passage of steam; a fabric pad arranged over the perforated top; and an arcuate padded cover hingedly mountedupon the arcuate element to retain a hat brim onto the fabric pad to shape the said brim; and means for conveying steam into either element; and means for draining condensed steam from the elements to retain a dry interior within said elements.

A hat renovating machine comprising a cylindrical crown steaming element having a converging bottom' to drain condensed steam therefrom; a hollow arcuate brim steaming element having a convexed arcuate perforated top to conform to the shape of a hat brim; a fabric pad detachably4 secured over the perforated top; an arcuate con-I caved cover hingedly mounted upon the brim steaming element to hold a hat brim onto the fabric pad to shape said brim; and a second fabric pad detachably mounted upon the cover to reform and lay the nap upon a hat brim.

A hat renovating machine comprising a cylindrical crown steaming element having a converging bottom to drain condensed steam therefrom; a hollow arcuate brim steaming element havinga convexed arcuate perforated top to conform to the shape of a hat brim; a fabric pad detachably secured over the perforated top; an arcuate con caved cover hingedly mounted upon the brim steaming element to hold a hat brim onto the fabric pad to shape said brim; and a second fabric pad detachably mounted upon the cover to reform and lay the n ap upon a hat brim; and means for conveying steam into either element. l 4
