Description

F. W. CHAMIER.
HAND GRENADE AND THE LIKE.
cm N' men N 21 I916 APPLI 0 av.
1,303,164. Patented May 6,1919.
To all whomz't may concern: Be it known that I, FREDERICVWIYLLIAM mm, a subject of the King of Great f Britain, residing at 63 Queensborough Terrace, .I- Iyde Park, in the county of London,
England, haveinvented certain new and useif :..ful Improvements in or Relating to Hand'- Grenades and the like, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to hand grenades .andtrench mortar bombs of the kind pro- '7 vided with a pivoted safety lever located externally of the grenade and controlling the firing mechanism. Y
v In such devices the pivoted lever is usually held in its inoperative position by a safety a '7 pin,.which,-when withdrawn, permits of the release of the said lever immediately the i grenade or bomb (hereinafter termed grena de) leaves the hand of the thrower or orother throwing device. '1 According to the present invention a weighted member preferably in the form of an arm or lever is detachably connected to "the'grenade in such manner that after the safety pin has'been withdrawn, the safety lever remains held in its inoperative position 7 .untilafter the grenade has been thrown and until a differential movement causes the 'weighted' member to become automatically detached from the grenade.
In order that the said invention may be clearlyunderstood and readily carried into 7 efi'eotthe same will nowbe described more fully with reference to the accompanying drawing, which shows the preferred embodiment of the' invention and in' which 1- p .7 Figure lis apart sectional elevation showing the weighted member or arm applied to a a hand grenade of the percussive or impact type, the pivot for the safety lever being located on the left hand side of the grenade. 1 2 is an elevation at right angles to Fig. 1. I ig. is a part sectional elevation showi a hand grenadefitted with a time fuse the pivot for the safety lever being located on the (right hand side of the grenade.
, p 4 is a view showing the weighted [member or arm detached from the grenade.
: I The said weighted member or arm A comprises in the example shown a strip of spring steel, provided at one extremity with a Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 2?, i916. Serial ITO-133,667.
has been'discharged from the trench mortaring the weighted member or arm applied toa :FREDERIC WILLIAM CHAMIER, or HYDE PARK, LonDoN, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR T0 'C ..P. G.'GO1VIPA1\TY LIMITED, 015 LoNDo'N, ENGLAND.
HAND-GRENADE AND THE LIKE.
Patented May 6, 1919.
grenade. The weighted arm A is adapted.
to lie against the safety lever G, which is plvoted at I, and to occupy such a position I that the weight lies with its axis or center of gravity coincident or -substantially coincident with the axis of the grenade, the steel strip of which the arm is formed conforming to the contour of the safety lever G. The pivotal center of the clip Cis located slightly below the axis of the pin E, so. that on applying the weighted arm A. to the gree nade, the clip C on the end of the arm will snap into position past the dead center which is thus formed, and the fulcrum of the arm being thus positioned below the axis of the pin E, the clip C will serve normally to hold the'said arm in place. When, how ever, the usual locking pin H is withdrawn and the grenade is thrown and has traveled a certain distance, a differential movement between the arm and the grenade will occur which will cause the weighted arm to turn outward and away from the grenade, until it moves beyond the dead center of the clip connection whereupon the weighted arm will become detached'from the grenade'and allow the safety'leve'r Gr to fly outward in the usual manner.
It will be apparent that by the provision of this device, the safety lever G is prevented from operating until the grenade has traveled a certain distance after being thrown and that the grenade will not explode before being thrown even if it' should accidentally fall or be dropped upon the ground orroll down the steps of a dug outafter the removal of the safety'pin.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. A grenade comprising firing mechanism, an externally arranged spring controlled safety lever forming part of the firing mechanism, a weighted member'normally serving to retain the safety lever in its inoperative position, and means for detachably connect;
ing said weighted member to the grenade in such manner that after the grenade has been thrown the said weighted member becomes automatically detached during, the flight of the grenade and thereby releases- I V 1 V j at one'encl of said armor leverf normally 2. A grenade comprising firing mecha the firing mechanism.
nism, an externally arranged spring controlled safety lever forming part of the firing mechanism, a Weighted member normally serving to retain the safety lever in its inoperative position, and means for detachably connecting said weighted member to thegrenade in such manner that after the grenade has been thrown, a difierential movement arising during the flight of the grenade causes the weighted mem ber to become detached and permits the safety lever to release the firing mechanism.
3. A grenade comprising firing mechanism, an externally arranged spring controlled safety lever forming part'of'the firing mechanism, a weighted arm or lever normally serving to retain the safety. lever in its inoperative pOSltlOIl, and means for detachabl'y connecting said weighted arm or lever to the grenade in such manner that afterthe grenade has been thrown adiiferential movement arising during the flight of r the grenade causes the Weighted arm or lever to become detached and permits the safety lever to release the firing mechanism.
f. A grenade comprising firing mechanIsm, an externally arranged sprlng controlled safety lever forming part of the firing e mechanism, an arm or lever, a weight'at one end of said arm or lever and means at the other end of said arm or lever for detachably connecting it to the grenade in such 7 manner that said weighted armor lever will retain the safety lever in its inoperative position' until the grenade has been thrown.
5. A grenade comprising "firing mecha' nism, an externally arranged spring con trolled safety lever forming part of the firing mechanism, an arm or lever, aweight at one end of said arm or lever normally lying; in a position more or less co-axial with the grenade, and means at the other end of said arm or lever for detachably connecting it to the grenade at a point adjacent to the free end of the safety lever in such manner that said Weighted arm or lever will retain Copies of this patent may be obtained for V grenadein such a position that this end of the safety lever in its inoperative position nism, an externally"arranged spring icon-V strolled; safetylever'formingpart of the firing mechanism, an arm or lever, a weight lying in a position more or less cofaxial with the grenade, and means at the other end of said arm or lever for detachably conr V- A necting the latter to ,a pin on the grenade in'suc'h a position that this end-of the'armf or lever lies adj acentjtoi the free end of the safety lever and at a point, below the dead center of the connection, until after the grenade has been thrown.
trolled rsafety lever forming partiof the firing. mechanism, an arm orlever,a weight at one end of said arm or lever norma'll' lying in a positionmoreor'les's co-axial wit i the grenade, and a clip atthe other end; of
