To all whom t may concern s Be it known that l, MIOAJAH R. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kemp, in the county of Bryan and State of Oklahoma, have invented a new and useful Cane-'Stripping Machine, of which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention relates to machines for Istripping leaves from sugar cane or sorghum preparatory to feeding the material to the crushing rolls in the manufacture of syrups and sugar.
One of the objects is to provide simple and efficient means for shearing or whipping off the leaves as the cane passes through the machine, suitable means being used for guiding the cane between the leaf removing elements.
Another object is to provide oppositely working leaf removers whereby should any leaves escape the action of one of said removers it would be removed by the reverse action of the next remover in line therewith. i
A further object is to provide means for gathering and removing the severed leaves.
Another obiect is to provide leaf removing means which do not require sharpening and which can be repaired and replaced easily.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consistsof certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that various changes may be made in the construction and combination of parts without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred forni of the invention has been shown.

Referring to the figures by characters of reference, 1 designates standards erected on a base 2 and supporting the sides 3 of the machine. rlfhese sides are connected by cross `members 4, 5 and 6, there being an inclined feed table 7 secured to the member 1 while an inclined delivery table 8, substantially in line with, but spaced from the table 7, is iixedly mounted on the member and extends under and beyond the member 6. 'ihe table 7 forms the bottom of a hopper having segn'iental side walls 9 and hingedly connected to these side walls is an inclined guiding and c leflectingboard 10. Secured to the upper face of the table 7 and to the lower face of the board 10 are wear plates 11 having longitudinal folds 12 forming parallel guide ribs separated by channels 13. The inner ends of the ribs carried by the board 10 rest upon the corresponding ribs carried bv the table 7 and, therefore, the two sets cf channels 13 are arranged one above the other and converge to form outlet openings 1&1.
Journaled in the sides 3 and extending between the tables 7 and 8 is a shaft 15 on which is secured a roll Short chains 17 are secured to tlie face of the roll in vertical planes alining with the ribs 12, these chains being of such length as to barely miss the ends of the tables 7 and 8 when the chains are fiuno out bv centrifugal force during the rotation of the roll.
Hingedly mounted above the roll 16 and inclined downwardly toward the table 8 is a combined guiding and deflecting board 18 having parallel guide ribs 19 on the bottom face thereof which correspond with the ribs 12 and occupy the same vertical planes therewith.

Short chains 22 are secured to this roll and are of such length as to just miss the tableS when the chains are thrown out by centrifugal force during the rotation of the roll.` A stationary guide board23 is located over the table 8 and extends between the member 6 and the roll 21, there being suiicient clearance between the board 23 and the roll to permit the chains to work past said board.
Secured on the case 2 with its inlet opening below and at one side of the space between the table 8 and the roll 16 is a flue 24C which leads to a fan casing 25 having an outlet or stacking flue 26.
,Ai drive shaft 27 is journaled on the base 2 and has a pulley 28 adapted to transmit motion through a belt 29 to pulleys 30, and 31 secured to the shafts 15 and 20, respectively, the belt being .held in engagement with these pulleys by an interposed idler pulley 32; Thus both rolls 16 and 21 will be rotated simultaneously in the same direction as indicate-d by arrows in Fig. 1. The
fan in the casing 25 may be mounted on one end portion of the shaft 20.
In using the machine the rolls 16 and 21 are rotated at high speed. The stalks to be stripped are then fed end first between the table 7 and the board 10 and will be held spaced by the ribs 12. The board 10 will be swung upwardly to allow the stalks to pass thereunder but willr press thereupon sufficiently to hold the stalks in the channels 13. The stalks will thus be fed to the roll 16, passing thereover and between the paths of the chains 17. These chains will whip off from the stalks those leaves coming into the paths of the chains and will throw them down onto the base 2. The roll 16 will, at this time, operate to support the stalks between the tables 7 and 8 and feed them to the table 8. The stalks while passing onto the table 8, will be guided by the ribs en the lower face of the hinged board 18 and will move between the paths of the chains As the stalks pass under the roll 21 the chains 22 will move along the stalks in a direction opposite to that in which the chains 17 moved, thus to whip off any leaves that may have clung close to the stalks and escaped the chains 17. The cleaned stalks will be discharged over the table 8 and all leaves removed from the stalks will be thrown down on the baseV 2 where they will be gathered up by the suction into flue 21 and discharged through the iiue 26.

1. A machine for stripping cane including spaced tables, a roll interposed between the tables, for supporting and feeding cane from one table to the other, and flexible leaf whipping devices upon the roll and forming spaces between the paths thereof for the passage of stalks,
