SUSPENDEBS.
Application led December 5, 1917.
b all whom t may concer/a.'
Be it known that I, DAVID F. Wien, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Ashland, in the county of Ashland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspenders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to suspenders, and more particularly to a suspender so constructed as to readily adjust itself to movements of the body of the wearer.
One of the main objects of the invention is to provide a suspender of the character stated of simple construction and operation. A further object is to provide a sus ender having means for supporting the utton cords mounted for rocking movement about a transverse axis so that tension applied to said cord will be in a vertical plane so as to insure that the strain will be transmitted properly to the buttons secured through the loops of the cord. A further object is to provide a saddle for receiving the button cord which is connected to the suspender straps by simple and eiiicient means, this connecting means supporting the saddle for rocking movement. Further objects will appear from the detailed description.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a front view of a suspender constructed in accordance with my invention, and the parts associated therewith, as applied.
Fig. 2 is a section taken substantially on line 2-2 of Fig. l.
The shoulder straps 1 of the suspender which pass over the shoulders of the wearer in the usual manner are secured together at their rearward ends by being secured in the pad 2. This pad is provided, at its lower` end, with a tubular member or sleeve 3 which receives the upper arms of a triangular supporting link 4. A connecting link 5 is secured through link 4. This connecting link is provided, at its lower end, with a substantially straight integral bar 6. This bar passes beneath the saddle 7 at the longitudinal center thereof so as to rockably support the same for movement about a transverse axis. To prevent longitudinal movement of saddle 7, oppositely directed ears 8 are struck downwardly from the bottom thereof, these ears fitting under and about bar 6 Specification of Letters Patent.

as to secure the saddle against longitudinal movement while permitting rocking Inovement thereof on the bar. Saddle 7 is of arcuate cross section, being formed by stamp ing and bending from sheet metal, and is adapted to receive the button cord 9 provided at each end with a button loop 10. The forward end of each strap 1 of the suspenders, in practice, is provided with a saddle mounted similarly to saddle 7 which carries the forward button cords.
The saddle 7 is so mounted as to be rockable about the bar 6 of link 5 so as to readily adjust itself to movement of the wearers body, the saddle having unlimited rocking movement in either direction. By this arrangement. the saddle is free to rock so as to insure that the line of tension will, at all times, be positioned in a plane substantially at right angles to the plane of the buttons to which the loops l0 are secured. This insures that all strains will be evenly distributed effecting smooth and easy operation of the Suspenders. Mounting the saddle for the cord in this mannerpermits equilibrium to be quickly and easily established between the various button cords to accommodate change in posture of a persons body, removing all unnecessary strains from the shoulders of the wearer and insuring a better set of the trousers supported by these suspenders. A pad 11 is secured to pad 2 and depends therefrom in back of the links 4 and 5 and saddle 7. 'This pad serves to prevent contact of the link 5 with the wearers body. Similar pads may, of course, be provided at the forward ends of the straps l for the same purpose.
In applying the invention. it will be evident that the supporting link 4 may be replaced by a link of circular or other shape at the forward ends of the suspender straps 1, and the link 5 may be either closed or open, as desired. It will be evident that there may be slight changes made in the construction and arrangement of the different parts of my invention without departing 100 from the field and scope of the same, and I intend to include all such variations, as fall within the scope of the appended claim in this application in which a preferred only of my invention is disits closed.l
What I claim is: carried by the saddle between the Side 10 In a suspender, a supporting strap, a link flanges thereof. secured to the supporting strap, a saddle In testimony whereof aiX my signature supportd on the bottom balr of the ink, said in presence of two Witnesses. saddle ein arcuate n slape an having upwardly egitending flanges, ears struck DAVID F' *WISE from the 'bottom of the saddle and bent Witnesses: downwardly to engage around the bottom WM. T. DEvoE, bai' of the link, and a button cord slidably F. N. PATTERSON.
Copies of this patent may he obtained for five cents each, by addressing' the Commissioner of Patents.
