To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MICHAL PIASECKI, a citizen of Russia, residing at Baltimore, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Tables or Stands, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in furniture and particularly to tables or stands of a foldable type.

The principal object of the invention is to provide a stand which may be compactly folded into a small compass, thereby rendering the article easier to transport or lower.

A further object is to provide such stand, the walls of which may be cheaply constructed,'the same being comprised of two parts and which are not readily liable to become disordered.

These and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which:

Figure 1 is a side elevational view showing a table made in accordance with the invention in an extended position.

Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same, a portion of the cover being removed in order to see the construction.

Fig. 3 is a side elevational view of the same when in a compactly folded position.

Fig. 4 is an end view of the table when in an erect position, and

Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the same.

The table top is comprised of a plurality of boards 10, 11 and 12, the outer members having disposed interior edges, while their inner edges, together with the remaining boards 11, 12 and the like, are joined together by mortise and tenon joints formed respectively upon their opposed edges.

The outer elements 10 and such of the inner elements as 12, are secured upon other transverse strips, shorter however in length by means of screws 16 in a permanent manner. These cross strips 14 rest upon longitudinal bars 17 and 19, arranged at a spaced distance apart and in parallel pairs near the end of the cross strips 14, these elements terminating midway in the length of the table in reduced tenons 17 and 19, adapted to enter corresponding recesses 18 and 20, formed in the adjacent ends of the outer beam sections 18 and 20 in which they are Specification of Letters Patent.

free to move longitudinally-the top and bottom edges of the sections 18 and 20 being provided with flanges overlapping the tenons 17 and 19 for holding them rigid to support the table top without interfering with their sliding movement in the recesses 18 and 20'.

Pivotally engaged by rivets 22 to the outer beams 17 is one pair of the supports 23, connected with the outer pair of supports 25 by pivoted rivets 26, these supports crossing each other in the form of a letter X.

Joined between the pair of supports 25 at their upper end is a cylindrical bar 27 engageable within recesses formed in the inner element 20 when the stand or table is in an erect operable position, the bar 27 being slidably engaged within a longitudinal slot 28, formed through the elements 19 and 20 so that the bar may be pressed over in alinement with the rivet 22 and the supports 23 and 25, folded side by side within the beams 17 and 19, extending out at one end therefrom, due to their greater length.

The bars 23 have inserted in them cross strips 30 engageable with similar recesses 31, formed in the bars 25, thereby extending the support when in a folded position.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawing it will be seen that a cheap, serviceable and strong stand or table has been disclosed capable of being simply extended into operative position or as readily folded which occupies but a minimum of space. Should it become desirable to lengthen or shorten the table surface it is readily accomplished by removing one or more of the boards 11 or 12 or inserting others of a similar nature, this being possible due to the construction of the interengaging beam elements 17 and 19, a tenon and their corresponding recesses permitting extension or retraction of the same.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a foldable stand, the combination with two pairs of spaced parallel rails, each of said rails being formed in sections and having interengaging elements therebetween whereby they may be extended or contracted, transverse plates secured to the upper end of said rails, a sectional table top engaged by said transverse plates, said sectional top being expansible or contractible, pairs of support elements hingedl; engaged at their *npper end with the outer of said rails, a

second pair of support elements pivotally engaged with the first named support eleinents midway of their length, longitudinal slots extending through the inner pair of said rails, and a bar secured at the outer ends of said support elements traversable Within said longitudinal slots whereby said stand may be collapsed or folded. 10
