Application filed May 21, 1815.
To all when). "it may concern:
Be it known that l. Hammett TALLA, residing at Hei-lhronn-on-the-Neckar, Germany. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Casting Metals. of which the following is a specification.
The object of the present invention is to provide an improved device for casting metals under an explosion-like p1 ssure into molds. It is a known proceeding to produce such explosion-like pressures by an explosive gas or a mixture of gas and air. The employment of explosive mixtures of gases presents. however. considerable drawbacks. .lt may suliice to mention, as existingamong these drawbacks. the required piping s. non return and shutoff valves and compression devices necessary when such gas mixtures are used. The. manipulation of the astinp; de vices is troublesome and takes much time and the produced pressure is comlimratively small.
A solid or liquid explosive material of any composition is therefore preferably used as the explosion-medimn.
The use of a solid or liquid explosive material presents the advantage that all pip ings and the like may be dispensed with; that several explosions may he obtained in quick succession; and that the production of castings o't' larger sites and oi metals compa 'atively hard to melt may be insured. the output of the plant will he thereby increased and a considerably denser structure of the casting will be attained.
In carrying out. the present invention it make use at a casting device provided with a loading space lying in front of the mold and adapted to he shut off from the crucible, whereby the loading space is in open communication with the mold and serves either itself as the space for producing: the explosions to convey the force of explosion. pro duced in a separate space, connected to the said loading space, into said mold. Tw (10.- vices for carrying out the process are represented in the drawing by Way of example.
Figure 1 shows an embodiment of the invention in a vertical longitudinal section, and 2 represents another embodiment, also in a vertical longitudinal section.
The device. comprises a melting furnace a of any appropriate construction with a crucible for storine' the metal. 'llhc cruel.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 29,604.
ble coinnmnicates With a. loading" space 6 either by a channel 1', as shown in Fig. l. or it is. as shown in Fig. 2. directly connected to same. The space 6 is loaded for every single casting operation by the shut-cit valve (1 secured to the bar c. this crucible and valve being well known forms not constituting specifically any part of my invention.
.t lever 71/. serves for operating the valve.
For the purpose o'l loading the molds the space 4 has a channel 7' with a lip for allixing' the loading nozzle to the molds. The space c connnunicates. according to the embodiment shown in Fig. 1. by the conduit (1 With a suitable explosion-chamber l. or'explosive may he introduced through the conduit g into the loading; space (2.
With the device accordinc to Fig. 2 the loading" space c lies immediately under the crucible 7), the pressure produced by the explosion in the loading: space beingconveyed through the hollow spindle c carrying the valve and the valve (Z tselr.
The ignition in the xplosion chamher can be obtained in a mechanical Way. the same as the openine and closing of the molds. and in due succe. v
The operation of the 'device is as follows 2-- As soon as the metal in the crucible 5 has become su'l'liciently fluid. a certain part o't it approximately cor-re.) iouding; to the capacity ot the mold is. by lifting the lever it. allowed to run into the loading space 6. An explosion then takes place and the prelre forces the metal through the channel 7" quicklyinto f the mold for the purpose of exactly ilillingg all the hollow spaces in the same.
For producing the explosion. gunpowder is preferably employed amh in finodi ed 'torin of construction instead or"? heing t ploded in a separate chamher. it may he led through the hollow spindle c or the conduit {1 and ignited by the liquid metal so as to force the latter into the mold. A spcc l lg;- nition device may thus be dispensed h.
What 1 claim as my inve-i "on and desire to secure by Letters Pat-nt- 1. A device for castin n and the li .e under an ei zplosion-lilr are into molds, comprising a crucible. a ding: space having a channel leading ther ada ted to communicate with a mo means for opening communication between raid leach 10 space and the crucible, an explosion chamher and a conduit leading from. said loading space to.the Chitlllbfil' Where the explosion is produced.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of 15 two subscribing Witnesses.
