V. L. WALLACE.
CANNING BUCKET.
APPLICATION HLED JAN-8. 1919.

CANNING-IBUCKET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 29, 1919..
Application filed January 8, 1919. Serial No. 270,196.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VENEMON LARRY WAL- LACE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Murray, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Canning- Buckets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to buckets and particularly to the bail engaging ears of canning buckets.
In canning factories many canning buckets are used and these buckets have to be nested one within the other. lVhen buckets used in canning factories are nested together they are liable to stick together and sometimes it is necessary to use such force in disengaging the buckets from each other that the buckets are badly damaged and almost torn apart before they can be separated. Furthermore, if these buckets are left inserted one within the other they are very liable to become sour and musty.
The general object of my invention is to provide means permitting the nesting of the buckets but at the same time preventing the outer surface of one bucket coming in intimate contact with the inner surface of the other bucket and specifically to do this by providing a pair of ears on each bucket, the pair of ears on one bucket engagin the rim of the bucket into which the next ucket is inserted so as to support the buckets with their surfaces in spaced relation.
A further object is to provide an ear which will reinforce the bucket at its rim and have ood engagement therewith.
Other 0 jects will appear in the course of the following description.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pair of nested buckets provided with my improved ears; and
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of one of the ears.
Referring to these drawings, 10 designates a bucket of any usual or suitable form, as for instance, a metallic bucket having a bead 11 at its rim. Riveted or otherwise attached to diametrically opposite parts of the bucket are the cars 12 with which a bail 13 is connected. My invention lies in the particular construction of the ear. The ear 12 as illustrated particularly in Fig. 2, is formed of relatively heavy sheet metal stamped out to provide a body 14 and a lug 15 through which the bail 13 passes, the lug 15 being ofi'- set from the plane of the body 14 at 16 so as to accommodate and extend beneath the bead 11. The lower ed e of the body is formed with an outward y projecting flange 17 which is preferably formed by bending the metal of the ear outward and then folding it again inward so that the flange has two thicknesses of material. This rmakes the flange particularly strong and rigid. This flange is disposed about 1 1-" or any desired distance below the bead 11 and when the buckets 10 are nested one within the other, the flange 17 of one bucket will rest upon the bead 11 of the exterior bucket so that the buckets are supported in spaced relation to each other and so that the exterior surface of one bucket does not cOme in intimate contact with the interior surface of the other bucket while at the same time the buckets may be nested in the ordinary manner. This not only prevents sticking of the buckets together but also permits the air to circulate between the buckets, thus preventing their becoming musty and sour.
While I have provided an ear of a particular construction for this purpose it will be understood that the ears might be modified in many ways without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim 1. A bucket having thereon oppositely disposed ears and a bail engaging the ears, each of the ears being provided with an outwardly projecting flange at its lower edge adapted to engage the rim of a bucket within which the first named bucket is supported to thereby support the buckets in spaced relation.
2. A bucket of the character described having a bead at its rim and oppositely disposed ears attached to the bucket, each of said ears being outwardly oflset at its upper end to ex tend around and above the rim, the lower edge of each car being outwardly flanged.
3. A bucket of the character described having a bead at its rim and oppositely disposed In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my ears attached to the bucket, each of said ears signature in the presence of two witnesses. being outwardly oflset at its u er end to eX- tend around and above the rimPiihe lower edge VENEMON WALLACE 5 of each ear being outwardly flanged, the Witnesses:
flange being formed of two thicknesses of F. R. ANDERSON, material. 7 R. MpLUDDEN.
