IMPROVEMENT IN HAT-VENTILATORS.
SPECIFICATION.
I, ASA H. YOUNG, of Milford, in the county of \Vorcester and State oflllassachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Hat-Ventilators, of which the following is a specification:
h'igure 1 of the accompanying drawing is a central vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is a side view, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken in the line X Y of my improved hat.
The present invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hats made of straw, felt, or other material, whereby an economical and effective method of ventilation is secured without detriment to the appearance of the hat, and with a saving in the straw or other material used in its manufacture. My improvements consist mainly in a hat provided with a corrugated or crimped band of any suitable water-proof material, arranged, as will be hereinafter more fully described, so as to form a ventilator and allow a free circulation of air around the head of the wearer.
In the drawing, it represents the rim of a hat made of straw or other material, and attached to the bottom of a corrugated or crimped band, I), made of any suitable material, which extends upward to the required width of'a band or ribbon, d, that surrounds it on the outside. The top of the band b connects with the upper portion of the hat e, being attached to the inner projections c of the corrugations of the band b, which may or not be lined on the inside with oiled silk or other suitable lining f, which, with the outer band or ribbon 61, covers the openings of the corrugations and forms a series of tubes or ducts, 9, through which the air circulates around the head of the wearer, which is thus kept cool.
By the use of the corrugated band I), which forms part of the crown of the hat, and is readily made of inexpensive material, not only is the ventilation secured, but the time and labor expended in braiding or otherwise forming, and the cost of the straw or other material that is required in ordinary hats to fill the space occupied by the corrugated band I), are saved.
.Having thus fully described my improvements, what I claim as my invention, and desire to have secured to me by Letters Patent, 1s-
A hat arranged with a corrugated ventilating-band, b, substantially as hereinabove described.
' In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ASA H. YOUNG.
