SANDPAPER-GUTTING MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMEs SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Contra Costa and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sandpaper-Cutting Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a machine particularly adapted for cutting sandpaper or emery paper into disks to permit it to be rel adily applied to an emery wheel or the li (e.
Another object of my invention is to provide a machine equipped with a single knife which will cut paper into disk formation.
A further object of my invention is to provide a machine equipped with novel arms whereby the paper may be held centered and clamped to the upper side of the base during the cutting action.
Another object of my invention is to provide a paper cutting machine of this character which will be simple, practical and comparatively inexpensive in construction, and one that can be manufactured and sold at a low cost. a 0
With these and other objects in vlew, the
invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and set forth in the claims sandpaper cutting machine as made in accordance with this invention.

Referring to the drawing, the numeral 5 designates a circular base provided in its upper side with a plurality of relatively spaced circumferentially extending grooves designated A, B and C.

periphery of the circular base and is provided in its upper side centrally thereof with a screw threaded opening 7 One end of the brace 6 is extended beyond the outer periphery of the base 5 to provide a supporting arm 8 which is provided with a vertical screw threaded opening 9.
A hollow member 10 is provided at one end with an annular exterior flange 11 through the medium of which the hollow member is secured to the upper side of the arm 8 by a suitable fastening means 12, such as screws or the like. The interior diameter of the hollow member 10 is concentrically related with the opening 9 of the arm 8.
A shaft 13 is slidably mounted through the tube 10 and has its lower end screw threadedly fitted in the opening 9. The upper end of the shaft 13 is provided with an operating pin 14 through the medium of which the shaft may be rotated in the arm 8.
A centering arm 15 is rotatably mounted upon the shaft 13 and moves about the upper end of the hollow member 10. The arm is provided on its under side with a lug 16 which is adapted to be fitted in a recess 17 formed in the upper end of the hollow member 10, thus assuring the holding of the arm 15 against relative rotation in either direction.
A pin 18 is secured through the shaft 13 adjacent its upper end and bears against the upper side of the arm 15 when the said shaft is at the limit of itsmovement in the screw threaded opening 9, thus assuring the seating of the lug 16 in its recess 17.
The arm 15 is horizontal and its free end is provided with a screw threaded opening which alineswith the opening 7 in the brace 6.
A clamping shaft 19 is provided adjacent its. upper end with screw threads 20, which screw threads are adapted to be fitted in the screw threaded opening in the free end of the arm 15. The lower end of the shaft 19 is reduced to provide an exteriorly screw threaded extension 21 which is adapted to be fitted in the opening 7 of the brace 6 to center the said shaft. The shaft 19 is provided at its point of juncture with the extension with a clamping collar 22 which is adapted to engage the upper side of a sheet of sandpaper, designated D, for holding the paper centered upon the upper side of the base 5.
\ The shaft 19 has removably secured thereto a plurality of split collars 23, which collars are arranged in spaced pairs and are secured to the shaft intermediate the ends thereof between the under side of the arm 15 and flange or collar 22. The pairs of split collars 23 are also spaced apart, the purpose of which will be hereinafter more fully described.
A supporting arm 24 is provided with an opening centrally thereof to permit the arm to be slidably mounted on the shaft 19 and positioned between the lower pair of collars 23. The opposite ends of the arm 24 are provided with longitudinally extending slots 25, the front walls of which are each provided with a plurality of relatively spaced screw threaded openings 26. An l -shaped clamping arm 27 has the terminal of its longer arm positioned through the slot 25 and is adapted to be held therein by suitable fastening means 28 such as a set screw or the like, which is fitted in one of the openings 26 and inserted into said arm. It will be apparent that by virtue of the openings 26 and screw 28 the arm 27 may be adjusted longitudinally within each of the slots 25 to permit the other arm of the L- shaped member to be moved inside of any one of the grooves A, B, or C. The arms 27 are adapted to bear against the upper side of the paper D which is arranged upon the upper side of the base to firmly clamp the same thereon during the cutting action.
A rotatable arm 29 has one end journaled upon the shaft 19 in the upper pair of split collars 23. The free end of the arm extends beyond one end of the arm 24 and has slidably mounted thereon a bearing member 30. The bearing member 30 has. formed integrally with its wall and adjacent one end a sleeve 31 in which the knife supporting arm 32 is rotatably mounted. The bearing member 30 is held in adjusted position upon the arm 29 by a set screw 33 which extends through the wall thereof and engages the said arm. r
The lower end of theknife supporting arm 32 is provided with an inverted U- shaped yoke 34 in which is journaled a disk cutting knife 35. The upper end of the arm is provided with a manipulating pin 36 whereby pressure may be applied to this arm and the arm 29 rotated about the shaft 19 to cut the paper D in disk formation.
In use, when it is desired to place a sheet of paper upon the base, it is only necessary to unscrew and raise shaft 19 and then by screwing the shaft 13 in a counter-clockwise direction the lug 16 may be raised from the recess 17 permitting the arm 15 to be swung on the shaft 13 to swing the knife carrying arm and clamplng arm from over the base. The paper is then arranged upon the base in the manner illustrated inFig. 1 and the arm 15 is then swung back into position beyond the oute periphery thereof, a tubuuntil the reduced extension 21 is in alinement with the opening 7. The shaft 13 is then rotated in a clockwise direction, bringing the lug 16 into the recess 17 in the hollow member 10 and the shaft 19 is rotated in a clockwise direction until the arm 27 and flange 22 firmly clamp the paper D in the manner illustrated in Fig. 1. The person then grasps the handle 36 and the knife supporting arm 32 and by applying rotary pressure thereon the paper will be readily cut by virtue of the knife 35 entering one of the grooves A, B or C.
It will also be apparent'that, by virtue of the adjustment of the arms 27 and bearings 30, various sized disks may be made.
' Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. A machine of the class described comprising a circular base provided with spaced circumferentially extending grooves, a brace secured centrally to the base and having one end extending beyond the periphery thereof, a hollow member secured to the extended end of the brace, a shaft slidably mounted in the hollow member, an arm rotatably mounted about the shaft and upon the upper end of the hollow member, a clamping shaft carried by the free end of the arm and engaging the base, a clamping arm mounted upon the clamping shaft, a knife carrying arm journaledfto the shaft, and a knife journaled to the last named arm for rotation therewith about the base. A machine of the class described comprising a circular base provided in its upper side with a plurality of circumferentially extending grooves, a brace secured centrally to the base and having one end extended lar member secured to the extended end of the brace, a shaft fitted in the tubular member and arm, a supporting arm secured to the upper end of the tubular member and surrounding the shaft, a second shaft fitted in the free end of said arm, the lower end of said shaft threadedly secured to the brace centrally thereof, an adjustable clamping arm carried by said second shaft, a supporting arm journaled on said shaft, a knife supporting arm. pivotally mounted to the second named arm, and a circular knife carried by the knife supporting arm and adapted to engage the grooves, as and for the purpose specified.
3. A machine of the class described comprising a circular base provided in its upper side with grooves, a brace secured centrally to the base and having one end extended to provide a supporting arm, a tubular member secured to the upper side of the arm, a shaft slidably mounted in the tubular member and fitted in the arm, a carrying arm having one end secured to. the upper end of the tubular member and surrounding the shaft, a second shaft screw threadedly knife journaled in the bearings, as and for 10 mounted through the free end of the arm, the purpose specified.
