e it known. that I, 'WILLIAM A. GONLEY,
esiding at. Needham Heights, in the county Norfolk Stateof Mass, have invented rtain'new and useful Improvements in onne'ts for the Caps of Railway Signal- Fusees, of;which the following is a specification, ;reference being had therein to the n i mp eyins n I i This invention relates to improvements in onnetsffor: the caps of railway signal fuseesw f r r improvement pertains to the manner 5 of attaching the tape to the bonnet for breakingaway-the top of the bonnet and exposmg he-jli complementmy igniting material for ghting thefusee; I g I "The primary object of my present invenon is to so arrange and locate the tape as ;save" material by Shortening the length Tbff thefta'peas compared with the length of jtapeirequired; to' arran'ge and attach it as ;here'toforefused. I

I I Specification of Letters Patent. i PatlltdiAQlkZZ,.1919. [Application filedlq 'ovember 6,1918. 'sr iaims. 26 1,f4c1f 1 Fig. 6is' a'similar'sectional'view to-that of Fig. 5, on anenlargedscale', 'andshowing Fig. 5 is a longitudinal se-caonaiviewtfa another form of cap withfmyimprovement attached thereto. Fig. 7 is a sectional view simil'artoFigtfi, showing another form, f cap wi th myfim- "provement applied thereto? It is well-'knownto 'thoseskilled in theart that a railway signal'fusee comprises a tubular body-portion v 1, which contalns the burning compound-2; Oneiend of the bodyf'portion- 1 is"-usually provided with a suitable spike-carrying "memberf'3, and the'bther or lighting end of thefu'see is provided with a lighting composition 4 applied'to'theoutside of its 'upper end, as shown in Figs. 5,6 and 7. I It is also understood by those skilledin the art thatrailw'ay signal' fusee's are provided with caps ofjva'rious' constructions.
'In' Fig. 5, I have shownone form of'cap 5,
which is a paper tube, jand in this form the upper end of the tube is closed'by a wood plug 6. In Fig. 6, the tubular portion 5 of the cap has its upper end closed byganother form of wood plug 7, and in Fig. 7-the upper end of thetube 5 of the cap is closed by crimping in the paper of the upper, end, as
shown at 8.
7 The form of'cap-usedisno part' ofmy 'present invention, audit may be of any desired form, but'in all cases there is applied to the outside of the upper end of the cap a lighting material or composition 9, which is complementary to" the lighting -material 4, at the upperend of the bodyl, of'the fusee, and these igniting materials 9 and 14 are complementary, as is the headof a safetymatch and the compositionon the outside of the boxes containing the matches. In fusees as used, the caps areprovided with a paper bonnet which comprises "a piece of paper which iswrapped around the: Louter end of the cap and'folded inward over the igniting material-9, for thepurposefof protectingit; Thus-{far I have; described what is common to f usees as'now'used. v,
present improvement eonsists inep plying the tape to the upper end of the bonnet, folding it thereon by the folding V of the bonnet over the end of the cap. This arrangement places-the tape in a folded'apf proximately z'igZzLgposition, as shown in Figs. 5, 6 and The sectional views 5, 6
and 7 are exaggerations of the thickness ofr the tape and the folded inporti'on 11 of the bonnet so f r as the thickness of parts is concerned.
In my improvement the tape 10 has a pro-.7 jecting free end 13 to be grasped between the fingeIfSfQf the-user for pulling the tape out straight and thus tearing away the lfqldedportion oifthe bonnet'and expose the igniting material 9. In operation with V and then pulled in the opposite direction breaking; away the other fold and exposing the gn ti g ompositiQ j ts upper encl-- Incarrying out my improvement, the honnet. From 'thisfit' constructions in that the tape is folded on 7 top of the cap andis folded in with the folding of the end of the bonnet, so that V w s'p'h l dfo th n o the bonn t breaks'away. i's'asaving of'approximately. one-half ;in the" length "ofthe tape required and con iequentlyrthe amount of materiar'required. o Another advantage of my improvementls thatinthe old construction just described, .the, bonnet and the tape are not applied to the cap until'the cap is applied to the fusee. That is to say the-capand bonnet-is notia, finished product until it; is applied tothefusee: The tape being fastened -':to thezca'p,
