Description

I. H. JACOBS. ADJUSTABLE HANDLE FOB BRO-OMS.
Patented A 22, 1919.

JOSEPH H. JACOBS, OF DENVER, COLORADO, ASSIGNOR TO JACOBS SPECIALTIES MANUFACTURING COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF COLORADO.
ADJUSTABLE HANDLE FOR BROOIVIS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 22, 1919.
Application filed May 1, 1917. Serial No. 165,782.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrn H. homes, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Handles for Brooms; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in brooms or similar articles having adjustable handles, my object being to provide a con-' struction of this class by virtue of which the axis of the handle of the broom may be made to occupy any desired position with reference to that of the head thereof. 4 That is to say, the handle may be so adjusted that its axis is in alinement with the axis of the head of the broom, or the handle may be so adjusted that its axis may form any desired angle with the axis of the head.
Having briefly outlined my improvement, I will proceed to describe the same in detail, reference being made to the accompanying drawing in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof. In this drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a broom equipped with my improvement.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken through the shank of the broom, one arm of the bifurcation of the handle ferrule being broken away.
Fig. 3 is an end view of the broom with the handle removed.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all the views.
Let the numeral 5 designate the handle of the broom, and 6 the head thereof. The shank 7 of the broom has the brush member secured thereto by means of wire convolutions as shown at 8. This shank 7 is perforated as shown at 9 to receive a fastening bolt 10. The shank is also surrounded by a band 12 which as illustrated in the drawing is composed of two members which are interlocked at their extremities in any suitable manner. This band 12 is perforated on opposite sides to register with the perforation in the shank of the broom. The handle is provided with a ferrule 13 which is bifurcated at its inner extremity and the arms M of the bifurcation straddle the shank of the broom and engage the band on opposite sides, these arms being perforated to register with the perforations in the band and shank. he band and the arms 14: are preferably toothed or roughened where they are in contact with each other as shown at 15, so that when the handle is adjusted and a fastening nut 16 screwed tightly upon the threaded end of the bolt, the handle will be securely locked in the desired position of adjustment. Washers 17 are respectively applied to the head and nut extremities of the bolt as best illustrated in Fig. 3.
From the foregoing description, the use and operation of my improvement will be readily understood. The handle of the broom may be straight in line with the axis of the head as shown in Fig. 1, or it may be adjusted so that its aXis shall form any desired angle with the axis of the head, this last named adjustment being well illustrated in Fig. 2.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
In combination, a broom having a shank transversely perforated, a band surrounding the shank, a handle having a ferrule provided with arms engaging the band on opposite sides, the band and arms being perforated to register with the perforations in the shank, the engaging parts of the band and arms being toothed to interlock, a bolt passing through the perforations in several parts, and a nut for locking the parts in the adjusted relation.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature.
JOSEPH H. JACOBS.
