THE HAMPDEN cLoNoUnnY oorrnaivr'mnsmiviirnii. or'lvrnnsouimn, AUSTRALIA,
To all whom it may concerm Be it known that I, ERLE SrAFroRn I-IUNr LEY, general manager of the Hampden Cloncurry Copper Mines Limited, of Friezland, in the State of Queensland, Commonwealth of Australia, subject of the King ofGreat Britain, residing at Friezland, in'the State of Queensland, Commonwealth of Australia, have invented certain new and useful Imfollowing is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved gas provements in Gas-Producers, *of wl -ichfthef 'producer for the generation of gaseous fuel and refers more particularly to a producer for the generation of gas for power purposes from wood, charcoal, coke, coal or other like suitablefuel.
The object of this invention is to provide a producer in which gas is generated for use in the production of power in a cheaper and more efficient manner than heretofore.
This invention comprises a vertical chamber having a feed at the top for the introduction of the primary fuel, a series of twyers for-the introduction of free air underneath the primary fuel, an exit for the gas beneath the said twyers, a grate at the bottom and means for the introduction of air and steambeneath the said grate. By this arrangement an incandescent zone is pro vided underneath the primary fuel and above the gas exit and another incandescent zone above the grate and beneath the gas exit and the 'gas is withdrawn from the producer at about the center of the body of fuel so that there are two distinct incandescent zones, one above the gas outlet and the other below the same. Provision is made 7 for the introduction of steam. into the feed chamber with the primary fuel which prevents the incandescent zone opposite the aforesaid twyers from rising.
This invention will now be more fully described aided by a reference to the accompanying sheet of drawings in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of a producer taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 2 while Fig. 2 is a plan of the same.
Fig. 8 is a cross sectional elevation taken A gas producer constructed according to this invention comprises a vertical chamber A constructed preferably of sheet metal lined with firebrick or other fire resisting ail awn e. l.

material A. This-vertical chamber A is furnished l with" i a- [semicircular or arched dome or cover B at its top having suitable feed door or doors B for the supply of fuel.* "The main body ofthejproducer isconstricted at or about the center A where- :by two distinotfchambers are afforded the --upp'er A being adapted for the combustion of the primary fuel, and the lower A? for the combustion of the fixed carbon and secondary fuel after having passed through the upper chamber. At the bottom of the upper rectangular chamber A are provided means for the introduction of air underneath the primary fuel which comprise a series of twyers C arranged in the walls of the said chamber immediately above the constriction A while a series of air inlets or twyers C are also arranged around the said constriction. These inlets or twyers may be furnished with controlling valves adapted to regulate the supply of air therethrough. In the bottom of the lower cylindrical chamber A is fitted a fire grate D beneath which are arranged openings E for the admission of air under the incandescent fuel and these openings E may be furnished with valves for controlling the admission of air. These openings E are also adapted for removing the ashes (if any) from beneath the grate D. Above the grate D are arranged poking holes D. Just below the constriction A that is to say between the two zones of combustion is provided an outlet F for the gaseous fuel. Within the said chamber A and opposite to the said outlet F is an inverted U-shaped bridge F constructed of firebrick or fire clay or cast iron (water jacketed if necessary). The said gas outlet F communicates with a chamber Gr within which heating pipes are provided for the vaporization of water and from which the gas passes to the necessary scrubbers, coolers and cleaners and thence to the gasometers or otherwise as may be desired. Steam pipes J leadwhere the admission of air through the twyers O C causes it to be partly converted into produeer'gas and partly into charcoal pa'sses thenee 'toath'escrubbers, cleaners, and coolers for use as -requ1red.
I- claim A,.gas ;pro ilueer, eomprlsing 1n eomb1nation, a yertieal chamber having a eonstrloti'on dividing the same into upper" and lower eompartmenta a-eover for-said chamber-provided with feed openings; a series of twyers introduelng alr lnto the upper compartment,
a second series of tvifyers introducing a'ifat 'said "eonstrictro'n; a "gas outlet, an inverted U-shaped bridge within the lower chamber opposite to and communicating with said outlet, a grate at the lower part of said lower chamber, means for admitting"air beneath-said-grate,- a vaporizer, and a steam pipe leading from said Vaporizer and sup plying steam into said ehamber -at the top and bottom thereof.
