ATTACHMENT-PLUG.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr. 15, 1919.
Application filed March 15, 1915. serial No. 14,577.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, REUBEN B. BENJAMIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Attachment-Plugs, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to attachment plugs, and more specifically to separable attachment plugs comprising an insertible portion carrying center and shell contacts and a separable portion carrying binding posts and contacts for engagement with the contacts of the insertible portion.
Among the objects of my invention is to provide an attachment plug which shall be simple of construction, efficient in use and eas to assemble.
urther objects of my invention will be apparent from the following specification taken in connection with the appended claims.
In the drawings, in which I have shown two embodiments of my invention Figure 1 is a side elevation of a separable attachment plug embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is an axial section on the line 22 of Fig. 1, showing .the parts connected, showing the manner in which the contacts of the insertible portion are held between the base and button or cap, and the manner in which the base and button are held together, and the connection between the spring contacts on the insertible portion and the center and shell contacts;
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 2;
ig. 4 is a plan view of the detachable portion which carries the bindin screws; 4 Fig. 5 is a perspective view 0 one of the tspring contacts carried by the insertible porion;
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the binding plates and contacts carried by the detachable portion;
Fi 7 is an axial section showing a modified orm of plug in which the sprin contacts on the insertible portion are-s aped and constructed so that they will properly enga either the contacts of a detachable mem r provided with contacts having curved tips such as shown in Fig. 2 or sub stantially straightcontact blades or fingers such as shown in Fig. 7;
Fig. 8 is a perspective view of one of the spring contacts carried by the insertible port1on of the modification of Fig. 7 and Fig. 9 is a perspective view of one of the binding plates and contacts secured to the removable portion shown in Fig. 7.
Referring now to the drawings in detail and first to the modification of Figs. 1 to 6 inclusive, the separable attachment plug comprises an insertible portion 10, which is to be screwed into a lamp socket or other outlet, and a detachable portion 11 to which are connected the conductors leading to any translating device. The insertible portion comprises an insulating base 12 for properly supporting the threaded shell contact 13, the spring contacts 14 which are clamped between the base 12 and the insulating button or cap 15, which cap also carries the eyelet or hollow rivet 16 which forms the center contact of the plug. The center contact 16 is electrically connected with one of the spring contacts 14 by means of a stamped sheet metal conducting plate 17. The base 12 and button 15 are secured together by means of a screw 18 which ex tends through the eyelet 16 into threaded engagement with a nut 19 which is seated, and non-rotatably held, in an axial recess 20 in the base 12. The eyelet 16 extends through an opening 21 in the plate 17 and is flanged over beneath it, as shown at 22, to hold the plate securely on the button 15. The threaded shell 13 has an inwardly extending flange 23 at its upper edge lying between the base 12 and the button 15. A part of this flange 23 extends inwardly farther than the other part, as shown at 24, to form an electrical connection with a bent over portion 25 of one of the spring contacts and 27 of the spring contacts 14 to hold the latter in their proper position.
It will be noted that the threaded shell 13 and the bent over portions 25 and 27 are clamped in place between the base 12 and I nection.
button 15 and that the clamping of these of the conductors to w 'ch the translating device is attached, which opening leads to a recess 33 in the up r face of the insertible portion in which t e binding plates 34 are seated. The binding plates 34 are secured to the detachable portion 11 by means of screws 35 having a threaded engagement with bushings 36 which are molded in the insulating detachable portion 11. The binding screws 37 to which the conductors for the translating device are secured are threaded into the binding plates 34. The.
contact tongues or fingers 38 extend upwardl' from the binding plates 34 and are provid d with curved upper ends 39 for engagement with orrespondingly curved portions 40 on the spring contacts 14. The lower ends of the contacts 14 are provided with lugs 41 which are movable in recesses 42 in the base 12, the lugs 41 bein provided to guard against the entry of t e fingers 38 on the wrong side of the spring contacts 14 and also to guide the fingers 38 properly.
In assembling the insertible portion of the lug the spring contacts 14 are drop ed in p ace in the recesses 28, the threaded s ell 13 is slipped over the base 12 and the cap or button 15 carrying the center contact 16 and plate 17 is placed on to of the base 12. The nut 19 is then dro p into the recess 20 and the screw 18 is t aded into the nut 19 to draw the button 15 and the base 12 together to clamp the spring contacts 14 and threaded shell 13 in place and to force the parts 24, 25, 26 and 27 into engagement with each other to insure a good electrical con The circuit through the plug is through the center. contact 16, plate 17, spring contacts 14, contact finger 38, binding plate 34, through the translating device to the other binding plate 34 thro the other contacts 38 and 14, and through the parts 25 and 24 to the threaded shell contact 13.
In the modification of Figs. 7, 8 and 9 the parts are substantially the same as in the modification of Figs. 1 to 6 except that the spring contacts 43 carried by the insertible portion are so shaped and constructed that they will go either contacts ha curved tips w ch will permit separation 0% the detachable portion by movement other than in a straight line or with contacts comprising straight blades in which the detachable portion can only be separated by a straight line movement. These contacts 43 are provided with bent over upper ends 44 for engagement with the conductors 24 and 25 and have a straight portion 45 for engagement with the straight blades 46 which are securedf to the detachabl%psofiltliltri 11 by means 0 screws 35 engaglng' 36 molded in the detachable portion 11, as in the modification of Figs. 1 to 6. The sprin contacts 43 are also provided with curv lower ends 47 for engagement with a detachable portion having contacts provided with curved ti s 39 such as shown in the modification of Figs. 1 to 6. Lugs 48 are struck up from the straight portion 45 of the contacts 43 for gement with openings 49 in the straight blades 46 to securely hold the blades 46 when the latter are brought into agement with the contacts V The inserti 1e portion of the plug in the modification of Figs. 7, 8 and 9 is assembled in the same manner as the plug in the modification of Figs. 1 to 6, and the cir-. cuit through the pl is the same.
